Anonymous asked: Are lindy and east coast the same?

jadagul:

I think that depends on whom you ask.

My understanding is that Charleston came first, and then Lindy Hop, and then Lindy Hop grew into a bunch of other dances, including East Coast and West Coast.

Wikipedia says that East Coast Swing was invented by social dance studios to be easier to teach than Lindy.

My experience is that most of what I’d consider East Coast Swing gets incorporated into Lindy, but the reverse isn’t true.  Lindy is a lot more flexible.

Also, ECS gets danced in ballroom competitions, and that style has its own character—a bit more performative and less social.

Agreed and endorsed on all counts. Also, I think that they have a point that six-count only is simpler.
