Non-american seem to refuse to believe that there is good food in America and all we eat are Kraft singles and drink Old Milwaukee.

Sometimes Bud Light, but otherwise correct. White bread's in the mix as well - preferably of the Wonder variety. Don't forget the mayo.

Living in Italy at the moment. They all think we eat junk food most of the time.

They aren't wrong. But to be fair all I think Italians eat is Pizza and Fettuccine and singing "Fettahhhhh CCINE!!!!!" and clasping their index, middle finger and thumb together.

Here in the UK there is the belief American cuisine is about quantity over quality.

Old Mil isn't that bad. Cripes I'm not gonna pay $10 for a fucking 6 pack of Guinness.

I'm American and I've never even heard of Old Milwaukee.

Did you go to college?

Yes, but I didn't drink a lot then. Still when I did drink Bud Light, Corona or Miller Light seemed to be the drinks of choice at parties.

Old Milwaukee is cheaper than those drinks. Man you must have been some rich kid or something.

I'm going to look for it, but I don't recall ever seeing it around where I live. Wonder if it's a regional thing?

An old guy who was my neighbor as a kid drank it by the case.

It's kinda like, Natty Light, but waaaaay worse.

What's old Milwaukee? I don't even know what that is?

I'm sure y'all have lots of great food. I'm just a shitty eater. But fried chicken looks good? And you've got your barbecue culture, your southern food... A continent that big can't not have good food.

A really terrible beer that nobody should drink once they finish college.

but I don't need to be afraid that any random guy walks with a lethal dishwasher in his jacket down the street.

what I am trying to say is that guns are present in americans daily life, while they are like unicorns over here. I guess this is why police isn't that chilled in the USA.

American here. In my 30+ years, I can think of one single time I saw someone other than an officer with a gun (carrying) in public. Just once. So guns aren't really present in daily life like you think. Sure, I see a bunch of guns at the shooting range, or the skeet shoot, or at home. But not a lot of guns out shooting people all day.

Daily life? Definitely not. I can go years without seeing a gun that's not owned by a police officer. Guns are mainly just used at shooting ranges. There's not many around here.

Dropping it on your head ain't too difficult.

You carry dishwashers above your head regularly? I have never done this in any circumstance

Just have to tip it over on your head.

Idk if dishwashers are freestanding where you live, but where I live you can’t just ‘tip it over’. You are also less likely to die from a dishwasher tipping on to you as opposed to getting shot

Perhaps I'm just pointing out how easy it is to kill another person. We are very soft fleshy meatbags. We don't have any natural armor or thick skin. The size of a bullet I need to take down a deer is significantly larger than what regularly takes down humans.

Considering more people drown every year than are accidentally killed by guns, I'd say it's safer to buy a gun and stay out of the water.

I own several guns and I really think this is something you have to experience to understand. I don't hunt (not a fan of venison) and I don't believe in using a gun for protection because nothing I own is worth killing over. What I do love is going shooting. There's something about nailing a target you can barely see through your iron sights and knowing it's been a lifetime of practice to get you to that point. Or seeing a milk jug full of colored water just explode as a .50 slams through it.

"Nothing I own is worth killing over."

I feel the same way. However, since I have no way of knowing someone's intentions if they enter my home/room uninvited, I will shoot first and ask questions later. If they have their back to me, I let them go. If they are being aggressive, I'll shoot. Most gun owners don't give a fuck about people stealing from them, it's when their life is threatened by someone else that they decide to act.

When seconds matter they're minutes away...

I am willing to bet that the police response time in rural areas are better than the ones in my neighborhood.

You live in a ghetto? I literally watched my car get hit by a drunk driver in front of my house, got his license plate number, and called the police. Their response boiled to down to "that's what you get for living there, not our problem." Who knows how much more damage that guy could've caused that night because the police in my city are scum.

No. They're not allowed either.

Also, you can get a permit to own a gun such as a hunting rifle where I'm from (the UK). But practically no-one is tempted, and the gun control laws are WAY more stringent.

America was originally conceived as a federation of independent states that behaved more like countries. Even today, people from different states and regions have vastly different cultures, identities, and values. While we're similar in many ways, any blanket statement about us is just laughable by default.

[–]Kunstfr [

It's hard to generalize all of you, but still it's a long stretch to compare various states of the US with various countries of the EU (which you haven't done, just to be clear).

The thing is, everybody generalizes other countries. If I tell you I'm French you're going to think of a Parisian guy. I'm from Brittany, and yeah we also have vastly different cultures, identities and values from Provence or Alsace. Really, we also used to be separate countries, but for a very long time.

[–]Kunstfr [

I don't think that's the problem. At least the problem for me is when someone says "I'm 1/4 German and 1/2 Irish, that's why I can drink tons of alcohol before being drunk". That's ridiculously dumb.

That is dumb. I usually say it in the context of "I'm really pale and tan like a lobster because I'm 1/2 Irish and 1/2 Scottish."

This applies to really every group of people, but it still isn't understood somehow:
That there are plenty of rational Americans who are no different than anyone else in the world who stays informed with the events in the world.
The american stereotypes and outliers make the news and movies. The normal ones just live their lives anonymously.

How to properly visit the US. If you think visiting the US is spending your entire time in NYC, DC, SF, or LA... guess what you haven't seen the US.

[–]Kunstfr [

Same for every country. When people visit France they visit what, Paris, Nice, Mount Saint-Michel and that's about it (and I'm being nice, let's be honest, it's mostly Paris).

Then you haven't seen France either. Nobody can ever said he's visited another country then.

I totally agree. Americans visit London and Paris and think they've seen Europe!

I know this is a joke, but Philly is in the same category as cities like Baltimore, Atlanta, etc. No reason to go there.

So many beautiful areas of the US to visit. I'd recommend a mid-west trip to see some of the natural scenery and then get alcohol poisoning in Vegas on your way out.

This may be a narrow response, but I don't think they'll ever understand the intricacies of Protestantism in the southeastern US. So. Many. Subsects. And not even over "important" doctrinal things. We're talking split churches over the color of the carpet, or the accepted role of the youth pastor. Not to mention the sway it has over public policies. It's one of those topics that I could rant on for a few hours.

Why some white Americans get to use the n-word?

See Louis CK, George Carlin & Quentin Tarantino to name a few but we lose our collective shit when Bill Maher tries to join the club.

Context. The answer is context.

Well, the context Bill Maher used it in wasn't really any different from the examples given above.
It wasn't malicious, it was just a bad joke. Poor taste for sure, but not malicious towards any race.

Agreed! I'd argue the Senator was setting up Maher for that punchline. Louis CK's bit sounds worse to me:

Comedian Louis C.K., appearing on the Opie and Anthony radio program in 2011, discussed the origin of the N-word with late comic Patrice O'Neal. After O'Neal described the origin of another racial slur, C.K. asked, "Do you know where the word n—er comes from? There was some black guy being a n—er, so they called him a n—er. He was being a real n—er, and that's where it stared."

[–]pm_me_ur_fine_boobs_ [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

European here. Does the word only refer to African-Americans or all people of African backgrounds?

We aren't as racist/ prejudice as one might be led to think...

Actually, its the opposite. Most of us are accustom to having hundreds of different cultures around us daily, and 90% of us don't even realize it. We are literally the most diverse country on the planet.

It seems to be only the, very loud, vocal minority that keeps this stigma rolling. Even then, their groups are usually composed of several different types of white people.

I'd disagree. I think your average, individual American does not believe they are racist, and probably isn't racist. But we are all living our lives and operating very comfortably in a society built in racism, that advantages and disadvantages significantly based on race. Sexism too. I don't want to get into a whole tirade argument with people. But I think if you spoke to people of color, they would be able to tell you how they encounter racism ingrained in American, whether greatly or slightly, every single day.
