I don't want politics in my game

Proceeds to protest in Klan uniform for 4 days.

For the tiny thing they were putting in, couldn't they have just ignored it since they were so keen on staying out of political drama?

I logged on earlier to check out the protests, it's a lot calmer than I expected although there are mods stationed in most major areas and I imagine banning and muting idiots but it just goes to show that the subreddit was being brigaded by TD users who don't even play and that players are way more willing to mouth off on reddit where there's no consequences than in game where they face losing an account they spent thousands of hours on

And by calmer I mean only 25% of people are dressed in white robes and holding nooses

Worrying about real racism and homophobia in today's world is a non-issue. It's something busybodies do to justify their relevance, and that's why its so comical to keep these kids running in circles.

What an odd thing to share.

I believe that's an expression of something that's playing out in American politics and society right now. That there's an idea that racism/sexism/homophobia/etc have no impact anymore, that "it's over". And if that's true, the people who still talk about it are just trying to raise a fuss, or are even trying to give these minority groups an advantage over the majority. That's my explanation for how you get things like people unironically calling Black Lives Matter a "black supremacist" group.

I keep seeing identity politics used as a dirty phrase and I can't understand what that's supposed to mean other than what you wrote. It boggles my mind

Identity politics got a real bad name because, essentially, the Democrats got a hold of it. It became a transparent pandering mechanism that was more about making sure boardrooms were diverse rather than addressing the issues facing places like flint or standing rock, or doing anything real on police violence for that matter.

Not that anime nazis wouldn't hate it anyways, but it definitely got a terrible rap because it was, more or less, appropriated by Democrats.

I hear "gay marriage is legal now, you guys won" way too often. It's not the G community, it's the LGBTQ+ community. Also marriage is great and all, but all you have to look at is public reception to Kim Davis to know how backwards we still are.

Marriage equality is awesome, don't get me wrong, but there are still a whole lot of other legal issues that persist. In many places, it is legal to deny gay and trans people housing and employment, and many states do not include LGBT+ as a protected class under hate crime legislation. Recently there has been pushback in Texas and Kentucky regarding gay couples' access to adoption.

It's difficult to listen to people like these OSRS people, in the same breath, say that homophobia is over then make some homophobic comment when they obviously have no idea what it's like to be gay in today's society.

Moderators put in a duck that would follow players around and named the duck Erin, after a popular Runescape streamer. Some players got mad because why didn't anyone poll them about this important change to the game and also naming a duck after someone is an intolerable act of favoritism.

I honestly avoid online gaming because of things like this. If I do join, I don't do voice communication. This isn't something new. It's a strange norm that validates people being dumbasses when they are young, without any repercussions as they age, and then they spur on younger dumbasses.

It's weird that there's such a weird bond between hate and comedy as well. I worked with someone who was 17 at the time. He had previously been brought to KKK meetings in his youth and was no longer in that community. However, he found it hilarious to sing racist songs about hating blacks after close.

This started out as just straight "allies" handwringing and trying to justify homophobia, but it went into straight gamergaters-are-neonazis-remember territory. Not sure which is worse, Violent homophobia is gross but people trying to justify it whilst denying they're homophobic themselves is also unpleasant.

Gamer gaters are terrible though... I think we established that a long time ago. We've also figured out that trolls being ironically racist is bad, and so are nazis. No need to wonder which is worse- its all bad. Only thing that's worse I think is combo terrible people: A homophobic, nazi gamergater that's violent.

You're talking about an alt right wet dream here. An old relic they change only at their own pace where they can kind from normies because OSRS is really just for old players.

It's a little haven for losers who want power.

    Old School REEEEEEScape.

I wish Jagex banned more people, it would make the game more pleasant to play knowing that those idiots got banned. I would even go back to RS3 and max my account..

I'm pretty sure they've only banned 15 people over this, which is seriously underwhelming. They need to be dropping that banhammer left and right. Mod MatK has said this behavior would be unacceptable, so why not actually show them that it's unacceptable?

Well, i can only hope that they are just gathering data and chat logs, and make a massive ban wave.

    I can dream.

I've always wanted to try out Oldschool Runescape (or just Runescape in general), but if this gives me any idea of what the community is like, I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole.

If it's any help, modern RS3 is MUCH better, because, if anything else, it isn't populated entirely by nostalgic manchildren.

The newer version is much more open. OSRS is for the people who refuse to accept change and pretend like they are in their glory days of middle school.

I'd argue that OSRS vs RS3+ is not just simply nostalgia, but there's a very clear difference in design direction to me. "New" Runescape takes itself way too seriously and lacks the kind of whimsical atmosphere and corny dialogue of OSRS. They also shrunk the world map to be like 1/5th the size (or something), sped up the progression and added slot-machine microtransactions. Plus I think OSRS kind of has a nice balance of skills, there isn't too much random bullshit skills that are thrown in for the sake of content (although Slayer and Hunter are just pointless grinds, if we're being honest).

It's unfortunate that the devs don't seem to understand this. And that the game attracts a manchild audience.

    just pointless grinds

But isn't the point of grinding the accomplishment of going through the grind?

Sure, but these skills just involve killing the same monsters over and over again, just like the main combat skills do and give you like one or two OK-ish things in return. Or maybe let you finish a quest. It's not like fishing/cooking for instance which grants you access to the highest-tier healing items in the game, or farming, which lets you place rare crops in convenient locations.

Oh, now I understand what you meant. There's nothing you gain from finishing the skill.

I think my wording there is bad, but basically they took all of the space between towns/major landmarks and removed it entirely so that everything just jumbles together and it's chaotic af

    ...they didn't tho

Not at all. Some towns, as part of a graphical rework, run together (Edgeville and Varrock, Taverly and Burthorpe) but the scale of the map is the same.

[–]crazylighterMaking Angry White Men even angrier since birth

Erm... no. I have no idea where you are getting your information but that's not even close.

    • New Runescape is all about change- that's why its RS3 and not Old school runescape. OSRS is for nostalgia for people who played runescape back before 2005 and liked it that way... they hate change and act more like middle schoolers as a community (as seen in the drama).
    • Even with the change in RS3 in graphical design and adding to the game, there's plenty of whimsical atmoshere and corny dialogue especially in the quests (I do a lot of quests, trust me).
    • The world map is not 1/5 the size... that's how big it is if you are free-to-play without a membership. With a membership, you have access to the whole map- there has even been reworks of Burthope and Menaphos. Even Ashdale (the newbie starting point) is now accessible.
    • Progression as in "grinding" is sped up, but they also added many skills, more requirements for the completionist cape, more quests, more tasks, more minigames... it's a lot to do vs just grinding and getting it done with.
    • Slot machine micro-transactions are OPTIONAL- despite what many think. You get 2 free keys per day simply for having a membership. Plus if you do quests, level up, do tasks- you get more keys.
    • Slayer is not a pointless grind- it helps level your combat skills, gets a lot of rs money, you get items for skilling, especially charms for summoning.
    • Hunter is also not a pointlss grind- many think it is, but its great for getting items for herblore, summoning, cooking, skillchompas, catching imps who drop materials, etc.
    • OSRS is for manchildren mainly- RS3 attracts a more broad kind of audience although there are proably plenty of manchildren, that's how gaming works.

Don't go to OSRS and find the new runescape and you'll be okay (best if you find a nice clan to up your chances). There's plenty of good RS people out there, you just won't find them if /pol/ and /4chan and 2007 runescape combine their forces and protest in OSRS. Try Runescape 3, it takes some getting used to but it's fun.
