Tony Ortega is a journalist who was formerly the editor of The Village Voice. He's written about Scientology since 1995, and in May 2015 released a book about Scientology's harassment of Paulette Cooper titled 'The Unbreakable Miss Lovely.' He continues to monitor breaking developments in the Scientology world from an undisclosed location in an underground bunker he shares with four cats and one of them wrinkly Shar Pei dogs. Who’s the most powerful elected Scientologist in the land? We have a candidate.

We beg your patience today as we take you on a bit of a meander to the point we want to make in today’s post. Eventually, here’s where we intend to arrive: Recently, and without any fanfare, a baton was passed, and we believe there’s been a change regarding the highest ranking elected official in this country who happens to be a member of the Church of Scientology.

Thanks for the slick videos, Marty Rathbun. Here’s a not very slick one for you.

As we write this, Marty Rathbun has put out three segments of a video that he shot recently with professional help. He says in these videos that he is going to expose the “anti-Scientology cult” that uses Lawrence Wright’s book Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison of Belief as its “bible.”

It’s truly fascinating, we’re sure. But as Rathbun emerges after months of silence, he’s avoiding a particularly important question that we’d like to see him answer.

Federal judge urged to ignore Scientology whining and get on with arbitration disaster

[Luis and Rocio Garcia, and Judge Whittemore]

Luis and Rocio Garcia are more aware than anyone that when Tampa federal Judge James Whittemore begins calling Scientologists to ask for their participation in an arbitration, all hell is likely to break loose.

Leah Remini’s ‘Troublemaker’ will become a Lifetime movie: Who plays Tom Cruise?

It’s Leah Remini’s world and we’re all just living in it. The King of Queens actress continues to surprise us after she defected from the Church of Scientology in 2013, wrote a bestseller about it in 2015 (Troublemaker: Surviving Scientology and Hollywood), and then rolled the dice last year with an A&E television series, Scientology and the Aftermath, that became a huge hit for the cable network.

Designer Rebecca Minkoff’s involvement in a Scientology front is pretty perfectly bad timing

[Rebecca Minkoff at a Scientology front group gala on Saturday]

Yesterday, we had a pretty big scoop — a public statement from Leah Remini’s stepmother, Donna Fiore, about being harassed by Scientology operatives to turn over dirt about her stepdaughter. But we also had a secondary story, and it turned out to kick up some dust as well.

Donna Fiore says Scientology is hounding her for dirt on stepdaughter Leah Remini

[Donna Fiore and her stepdaughter, Leah Remini]

Last week we told you about a new smear video that had been uploaded to the website the Church of Scientology uses to attack Leah Remini and her A&E series, Scientology and the Aftermath. The video was posted just hours before a new two-hour Aftermath special was aired on Memorial Day, last Monday night.

Scientology to federal court: A judge calling our members directly? Are you nuts?

[Tampa attorney Wally Pope finds himself between two headstrong figures]

The last time we checked in on the Garcia fraud lawsuit, Tampa federal Judge James Whittemore sounded like he’d lost all patience with the Church of Scientology. He restated, in no uncertain terms, that he was fed up with the bickering on both sides and was taking over the process of selecting a panel of arbitrators from a list of 500 Los Angeles-area Scientologists submitted by the church under seal.

Scientologist’s lawsuit against Jim Carrey over Cat White’s suicide survives dismissal

Yesterday, a story ping-ponged around the usual media locations, indicating that a Los Angeles Superior Court judge had decided not to dismiss two wrongful death lawsuits against actor Jim Carrey that grew out of the suicide of his Irish on-again, off-again girlfriend, Cathriona White, who died in September 2015 at the age of 30.

Remembering another Scientology ‘warrior’ — with the help of Mark Bunker

[Dennis Clarke, mastering chewing gum tech]

On May 9, a Scientologist named Dennis Clarke died in Hawaii, where he’d been in failing health for some time. There was some discussion on the usual forums about Clarke’s extensive history in the church. He had been a Freedom Medal winner for his work as president of CCHR, the Scientology front group that agitates against psychiatry. Later he had become disillusioned when the church he had served for so long provided no help after he had had a stroke that left him partially paralyzed.
