Rep. Martha McSally represents an Arizona House district won by Hillary Clinton. She voted for Trumpcare. But according to her, she’s a victim of Donald Trump’s tweets. In a private speech to the Arizona Bankers Association recorded by a member of Indivisible:
McSally complained that President Donald Trump and his tweets were creating troubling "distractions" and "it's basically being taken out on me. Any Republican member of Congress, you are going down with the ship. And we're going to hand the gavel to Pelosi in 2018, they only need 28 seats and the path to that gavel being handed over is through my seat. And right now, it doesn't matter that it's me, it doesn't matter what I've done. I have an 'R' next to my name and right now, this environment would have me not prevail."
Yes, you voted to take health coverage from 23 million people, but your problem is that a “distraction” caused by someone else is “basically being taken out” on you. “It doesn’t matter that it’s me, it doesn’t matter what I’ve done”? You did a thing! A very unpopular thing! A thing that will destroy a lot of lives. So spare us the poor poor pitiful me routine.
It’s true that 2018 is likely to be a bad year for Republicans. But congressional Republicans aren’t innocent bystanders. They’re not just supporting Trump and making excuses for him, they’re actively working with him to pass an agenda that’s bad for American families, American workers, American voters.
