Timing the publicity and hype to generate sales is a real and we'll studied thing, and messing it up can cost a AAA game tens of millions in sales.

You joke but it's a big deal.

During the beta for guild wars someone gave my brother a closed beta account. I guess they had their NDA while signing up for the account so he never agreed to it.

They gave him a closed beta account, and I believe the game once it came out in exchange for him signing a physical NDA (which was mailed to him). They didn't want him selling screen shots and videos.

Yeah, but I doubt it will Hurt CDPR. I remember when Half Life 2 leaked and nothing came of it. I don't think this leak will hurt the game.

As someone working in the video games industry, as a PR. My advice: always be honest, don't lie, don't cover. Shit hits the fan eventually.

PS: I also worked with CDPR on TW3, hit me if you need any advice or anything :) PPS: mostly supported them. They are absolutely brilliant, creative, driven beasts - learned so much from them. My biggest work is still handling DSIII in Europe - don't hit me pls.

NMS is a very interesting topic when it comes down to PR/comms and there's a lot to say: how Hello Games handled it, how much Sony is at fault, the media role in it. I'm not down playing the mistakes here, don't get me wrong :). But the bottom line is that they never really aligned (or stopped doing it at one point) PR/Marketing with Development, and that's one of the worst possible things you can do: oversell/undersell. Fairly certain that with more time they could do what they sold to press/gamers. But the game had to be shipped for several reasons

Reminds me of John Romero's game: Daikatana.

I wrote a small piece about Advertising in Videogames on my personal blog and tackled this topic a bit. I'll probably do a full write up about NMS when I have time. Lmk if you are interested.

But really, it's not all black or white when you work on a game. Plus, no matter what you do, gamers will be mad at you. I still have in mind some comments on DSIII campaign...

I hated Gwent so much because my deck sucked and I didn't know how to play. I got the hang of it, started winning really good cards and now I keep getting sidetracked trying to find good Gwent cards instead of continuing the story.

It's quite obvious.

Mainly I didn't enjoy the comat/gameplay, felt too slow and the same basic strategy got me through the whole game. I also didn't like the main story it spent too much time looking for Ciri and the side stories in between didn't grab me either(except the Red Baron). I tried a couple side missions, but honestly found myself forcing myself to do them and not really enjoying them.

That said I acknowledge it's a great game and one of the most realized worlds graphically and lore-wise, it's just not for me.

I agree with you you on the combat. Even if you turn the difficulty up, it forces you to do a little more, but I still end up doing the same thing for hours without feeling like I'm really using skill like I would in Dark Souls (I know that's not a totally fair comparison). I view the game more as a playable movie, and a really awesome one, at that.

I 100% understand why Reddit loves the game so much. The production value is incredible. Cool characters, good voice acting, good writing, and still one of the most beautiful games I've played on my PC. Can't hate on CDPR.

Thing is, tell me an open world game that has interesting combat with a lot of depth. Imo its really hard to implement that kind of combat in an open world game.

Imo its really hard to implement that kind of combat in an open world game.

I agree with you. This is why I mentioned it isn't fair for me to compare it to Dark Souls combat, which I find infinitely entertaining. Although there aren't necessarily other games in the genre that have done it right, yet, this doesn't take away from the fact that it gets stale for me.

Dragons Dogma has the combat down.

I'm not going to argue, as I didn't get far into this game yet, but from watching my friend play this game, the combat seemed very repetitive too? Is there more to it than I surmised?

yes it is. There is not one game that the combat isn't repetitive. RPGs are usually the most repetitive because it's long.

Lots of different classes with unique ability's plus your companions that can help you. Combine that with climbing on big enemies, it's pretty varied.

Cool, I've been meaning to get back into it; I'll try playing around with different classes; I like how much of the game is planning for and reacting to the missions that take you so far out of the way.

dragon's dogma has a brutally slow start I thought, but it goes to wonderful places eventually

Horizon: Zero Dawn. It gets beyond the typical "open world combat" issues with lots of traps, a deep ranged-combat system, a focus on taking down complex mechanical enemies, and promoting a ton of creativity by the player in how to proceed towards that end. Though to be fair, when you get into the person vs. person melee combat ala TW3, it falls similarly short.

While not available or for everybody, the creativity and depth of HZD combat is worth all the praise and GoTY nominee chatter it's received.

Are you a Dark Souls player? I find this sentiment is common among us.

I'm absolutely with you. I forced myself through a good amount of it, but I generally didn't enjoy the combat, took me a couple tries to actually sit through the tutorial area and out into the world. Maybe it's just I've been playing more PC games lately with keyboard/mouse, but it just felt clunky to me.

But like you said, it seems like (and obviously has been proven to be) an amazing game, I wish I could get more into it.

I specifically got an xbox controller to play it since a friend of mine said that the keyboard would require me to remember a bunch of shortcuts and I just dont have time for that. The side quests were pretty interesting though and I actually liked them better than the main story but i guess that happens a lot with good rpgs like skyrim as well.

[–]Freshlaid_Dragon_egg 13 ポイント14 ポイント  (17子コメント)

I agree, the combat wasn't very engaging. Plenty to do, but why should I aard on this mob but not on this one when i can just r1 r1 roll r1 everything and be moderately effective?

This is literally Dark Souls and everyone jacks off over how combat intuitive that game is, you can be many different builds but it always comes down to roll, roll, roll, hit, or parry/hit or just block with a shield till you reposite. Witcher 3 has just about the same style of combat but much more different ways to kill things imo.

I personally hate the progression system... At lvl 4, I found and killed a lvl 6 mob... Which gave me a lvl 24 recipe... I don't know if recipes are actually in multiple places, or if I'll end up using it or not, but it's a pretty weird design...

I also didn't like how XP was managed... A huge boost to XP comes from the main questline, which makes sense, but if you don't do it early in Velen, you're underpowered for a lot of stuff, and when you do it, you're overpowered for a lot of stuff... I also realize this is why some games go with auto leveled mobs.

I'd like to hear about this Gwent addiction, because I too suffer from this condition.

I am totally with you, can tell that the game is really well made I just could not get into it. Though I do kind of agree that the combat is probably part of what I didn't love, think its more to do with playing an already established character for an RPG is not for me. If it was an action adventure 25 to 45 hour campaign I can deal with playing as a character that is already created, but with long RPG's its more fun for me to create my own avatar from scratch. You know, role play...

To this day I've been wondering why I just couldn't get into the game but you nailed it. The fact that I was playing an "already established character" really didn't sit well with me. I had the same issue with Mass Effect. Mount and Blade on the other hand is by far my favorite RPG just because it literally lets you choose a role and play it how you like.

Funny enough, Deus Ex (the original) is my favorite game of all time despite largely having the premise of an established character.

It is a brilliant game but I feel the same way as you. I stopped playing after the Red Baron and haven't really missed it, despite really enjoying parts of it. In particular how they handled potions and alchemy. Automatic mixing is a revolutionary idea!

CD Project Red has earned my highest respect as a company, every time they speak to the fan base they are just on point.

I really look forward to Cyberpunk 2077 but I refuse to build expectations for it. I like going in blind to avoid being let down by my own hyped up expectations.

Every time I hear about a game and go, "Yes! This is the game I've always wanted!" it always ends up disappointing me. When I go in with a relatively blank slate, it's much easier to be pleasantly surprised. Unfortunately, what little we've seen/heard about Cyberpunk 2077 has me so excited that I don't know how I can keep my head in the sand until it comes out.

I did it that way with horizon zero dawn. I saw the announcement trailer/Dev gameplay way at the begining. Nothing after that.

Looked up some info a few months before release. Found out it wouldn't have a 60fps option so I decided not for me.

Bought it a few days after release and holy shit, what an amazing game. It may be 30fps but at least it was stable.

Best game of the year so far, for me.

God the months leading up to Breath of the Wild were like that for me. It took everything in my power to not research everything I could find and boy did it pay off. 130 hours in and I'm still finding all sorts of neat surprises and experiences.

You speak the truth about keeping moderate expectations. I remember however preordering W3 a year before its launch - I usually don't preorder but I had a feeling after playing W1 and W2 that they will deliver. And that their work deserves my pay. And it delivered as one of the best RPGs I enjoyed playing, up there with Gothic2:NotR and TES3.

So now even if I'd rather have no expectations and be blown away I can't hope but expect higher quality content and hard work again from CDPR :)

Oddly I didn't know anything about C2077 until recently, and so I have zero expectations, but I would like them to succeed at it, so I can have another cool game to play. Given my W2 to W3 experience, it seems like they are a group that knows how to make games and also how to continue to make them better.

I'm going to stay away from the hype train myself, but I am curious about how it is going to turn out.

Who on earth targets CDPR

The kind of person who ransoms a company for their private files.

You know, a total twat.

An idiot, indeed. They just got themselves all the attention a hacker doesn't need at all to cover their tracks.

How do you figure they are idiots? Hackers make millions and millions every year by stealing docs and holding them for ransom. We can't know if these particular thiefs are any good at what they do or if they are amateurs, but demanding ransom is not stupid in and by itself.

It is an asshole thing to do, but not nessesarily stupid.

I'm curious to see if cdpr would behave the same if the files hacked were files they cared about and not from some older version of the game.

Let's be clear, the files may not be as dated / inaccurate as they are leading on. It is in CDPR's best interests to downplay their value in order to spur fan's curiosity in the event they are leaked.

Regardless, I think it's awesome how hard they squashed any hope of a payday for those in possession of the files.

Honestly, considering we're dealing with a logical company(CDPR), what did the hackers even hope to achieve? It's not like they stole a working build of a game, they wound up with some design documentation. If they release that information to the public when they don't get the ransom they're after, they've achieved... what, exactly? Maybe some good press for CDPR, and some hyped fans getting some minor information about the upcoming game. If I were more cynical toward CDPR, I'd probably think it was a marketing stunt.

It seems they are just threatening to publicly release the files, which isn't that great of an incentive.

A much better method is to copy and delete the files from their servers, then ransom them back. that way they either pay the ransom or go through all the work of recreating everything (something that might cost them significantly more than the ransom). though of course proper offline-backups ruin that plan (which is why things like that are so important, especially in a software-focused company) you could always do what they are doing now as a fallback.

The way this guy did it was just stupid.

Lol as if a company like CDP didn't have multiple copies, backup and source control in the first place. You can't just rm -rf the copies and expect them to give a shit.

Sure, you would expect that to be the case. but I have worked with too many companies that didn't keep proper backups to trust that it would be without hard evidence.

I admit, that CD Projekt Red is unlikely to be one of them, but there is almost no scenario where a ransom threat like this works out. the only reason it would is if they had something to lose from it, which they don't. as it is right now rejecting actually benefits them since it gives them even more publicity (not that they need it).

They probably just don't have great security Vs. EA who could suffer a huge loss if something bad was leaked about them

I don't get it. CDPR are a few projects company, vs. EA that have tons of games released per year. If you have just 1 or 2 big projects and just one of these get boycotted, the impact is bigger.

This suggests that people don't already know exactly what the next EA or Ubisoft games will look like...

Obviously these hackers don't care about the integrity or history of who they're attacking, but it absolutely sucks to see such a great developer like CDPR get targeted like this.

In cases like this I think it's important for us to show our support. They've showed so many times in the past, including recently with The Witcher III, that they care about the community and an engaging, world-class experience in the products they put out. I won't look at a single leak if they come out, out of respect for CDPR.

And if anyone who has worked on Cyberpunk 2077 sees this, or if you work at CDPR in any capacity: thank you for the awesome work you do. So many of us here can't wait to support you in any way we can!

if you dont mind, im stuck at work. what is this saying?

The picture? Basically that some hackers have gained access to game files and will leak if CDPR does not hand over a ransom. CDPR says they wont do it, so be careful if any spoiler esque stuff comes about.

okay thanks.

All I got from this article

is that Cyberpunk 2077 isn't dead boisss

Honestly I don't know what the blackmailers expected but this response.

These are the nicest guys in the gaming industry. Why attack them!? It's like kicking a puppy :(

Great way to build a positive PR campaign, I never heard about the game... now I have and intrigued

If this was Ubisoft or EA people would call it fake and a publicity stunt. I like CDPR and will give them the benefit of the doubt, but remain wary.

WE HAVE YOUR FILES

K

give us money! or we will release it!

and?

Basically. No fucks given, enjoy the cops!

Good guy CDPR. Handled the situation very well. I just don't understand why these hackers are going after one of the most genuine gaming companies out there right now. CDPR actually cares about their games and in delivering an excellent product to gamers. Why don't these hackers go after EA or Ubisoft and teach them a lesson.

These hackers aren't trying to bring anyone to justice or "go after" anyone. They're doing it for money plain and simple. That's all they care about.

That, and clicks when Kotaku or some other bottom-feeder leaks this. Remember Fallout 4? Bethesda remembers. I.e. also money.

Probably because Witcher 3 sold for a fuckzillion moneys, and they want a share of that. Plus, CDPR might have less security than EA or Ubisoft, just because of hteir young age. I might be wrong though

Oh those hacker groups like to take down their servers on occasions. Yea it might make some poor guy at EA have to work overtime to get them back running and not to mention all the people not able to play online but it really has 0 positive impact on the community.

YEAH LET ME JUST DOWNLOAD SOME OUTDATED STUFF FROM PEOPLE THAT INSTALL RANSOMWARE ON COMPUTERS

Given the setting of the game, I kept thinking this might be a setup for some kind of promotion campaign. It sounds a little too straightforward and serious for that though.

That would be genius though.

Their servers were attacked a week or so by a ddos attack, their free to play online game, Gwent was down for a whole/half a day, something tells me this and that attack are connected.

Dang, they just called the hackers out on their old files. "You ain't got shit. Do it, you won't."

This is an unfortunate situation. PSA there is an active Cyberpunk community so if you want to keep up /r/cyberpunkgame is the place.

that's not blackmail.

That's extortion.

Blackmail is a form of extortion but not all extortion is blackmail.

Plot twist. The hackers were hired by EA

Twitter blocked at work, can anyone TL;DR?

people supposedly got ahold of cyberpunk 2077 files and will release them to public if they do not pay a ransom. they arent paying it and are contacting legal help

Released or not. I wont touch the game until they realease it themselves.

We need a witcher to track them down

If only bioware did this for ME3 when the story was leaked.

Good on you. Never give in to these scumbags.

Ive got too much respect for this company to look at any leaks or other bullshit

i'll fight anyone fucking w/ CDPR
