That's using NYC energy prices. Butts haven't been mined there in years. What about using Chinese energy prices?

Electricity prices averaged 19.4 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh), up from the 18.2 cents per kWh paid in February 2016

Shanghai: 0.56 RMB / kWh == 0.09 US Dollar

They aren't mining in Shanghai either, I thought. Isn't it mostly rural hydroelectric power?

For fucks sake. Instead of using excess power to develop alternative technologies that can minimize our carbon footprint, or develop new technologies to help cure infectious diseases or desalinate salt water to provide water for poor people who are lacking in clean water - china uses its cheap excess energy to mine a digital currency that mostly serves to make the 1% of people who bought in and held from 2010 onward many many millions of dollars...

I wonder if there's any kind of easily verifiable but hard to compute protein folding or other scientific problem out there.

I used to believe that is true but after more investigation I find that such estimates fail to take into account the extreme energy consumption that goes into making hardware. For example, if some ASIC rigs dropped out of the sky in your lap for free, it might cost you $6 to mine a transaction. But we all know those rigs are made by factories belching coal, and buying up materials from mines that drill into mountainsides, etc. When you really look at the big picture, $6 could be the tip of the iceberg.

Wow that's quite an improvement, it used to be $30

which means I'm not buying it

The actual Bitcoin blockchain will only show very large transactions (such as a military purchasing a new space shuttle)

So fees will probably keep rising then to about that level.

[–]drbrain 1 ポイント2 ポイント  (0子コメント)

Wouldn't $6 be the fee floor without the subsidy of the mining lottery pay out? So the effective price floor is somewhat lower than the electricity price (provided you can find a way to barter your lottery winnings for electricity to run your equipment).

Solar energy is the future, so butt mining cost is no issue

Looks like the tx fees are finally starting to reflect that.
