Twitter mocks GOP for using movie gif to dismiss Comey statement

The Republican Party's official Twitter account on Wednesday dismissed former FBI Director James Comey's testimony with a movie gif, prompting immediate mockery by social media users.

Comey on Wednesday released the opening statement in his testimony Thursday to the Senate Intelligence Committee. Comey's statement confirms reports that Trump asked him to "let go" of the investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

The GOP's Twitter account responded with a gif of Ethan Hawke from the film "In a Valley of Violence," captioned: "Trying to find something of substance in Comey’s opening statement like."

Twitter users — including a number of Democratic lawmakers — swiftly ripped the tweet, mocking the party's digital strategy and attempt to downplay Comey's testimony.
