INTP characters (self.INTP)

Hello citizens of /r/INTP, I am bored, putting off some work, and felt like getting this all out, so here is my list of INTP characters. Expect updates. What are some you can think of? Let's discuss!

Alice Alice's Adventures in Wonderland Often considered an ENTP, but without conscious effort, she drifts back into her head at the cost of the interaction. Cheshire Cat is an ENTP. She wants answers; he wants questions.
Lieutenant Commander Data Star Trek: The Next Generation Pre-emotion chip; a robot, but a behavioral stereotype.
Dr. Victor Frankenstein Frankenstein What happens when an INTP is socially disconnected, pursuing what makes sense without any Fe grounding to reorient oneself. An extreme example of the reality.
Professor Frink The Simpsons Heavy Ti-Si loop, out of touch, overanalytical.
Mycroft Holmes The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes Smarter than his ITJ brother, but lacking any desire to apply it, he sits in his armchair in the silent Diogenes Club, gorging himself, reading the paper, and deducing as a party trick from his comfortable place.
L Death Note Contrast his reasoning to INTJ Near's, or ENTJ Light's.
Elizabeth "Liz" Lemon 30 Rock Meticulous thinker who longs for relaxed Si comfort in life but is tethered to awkwardly handled Fe obligations, the actress' suspected INTP nature shines through. ISTJ is also a strong possibility, making her an unclear example, but she does seem to struggle with the traditionally SJ workload thrust upon her, lacking followthrough, motivation, and organization in personal endeavors.
David Levinson Independence Day Here. Detailed understanding of what he means in the logical hypothetical, struggling to explain it through Ne vomit, analogies, casual ways to express it. Note "ifs" and "likes" and "cans" and "coulds". Strong behavioral P, too.
Doctor Manhattan Watchmen This really encapsulates that detached style, emphasizing the dispassionate difference from INTJs.
Malcolm Malcolm in the Middle Well-adjusted Ne subtype. Poor example. This is what typing by default looks like.
Maurice Moss The IT Crowd Demonstrates the Ne side, smiley, spontaneous, oblivious. Played by an INTP.
Abed Nadir Community Nails the Ti detached, internal understanding, and simple Fe going with the group that results from it. His use of casual references strongly points to Ne/Si, but he is not the best example; his eye for cinematography and synthesis makes ISTP a lesser but possible argument to make.
Edward Nygma Gotham He has the restrained eccentricity of auxillary Ne, and a love of puzzles as an abstract thing, not taking serious repercussions to heart. Has an ENTJ shadow in The Riddler. Not strongly Ti-Fe, though.
Rich Purnell The Martian Clip. Obvious behavioral P, focusing on internal understanding and abstracting of theoretical concepts, letting appearances, organization, and hierarchal awareness slip as a result.
Spencer Reid Criminal Minds Here. Uses Ne within a Ti-Si cage. The dictionary type. Uses "maybes" and questions to quickly toss out possibilities within the possible limitations. His Ne runs quickly when he knows the boundaries to search. Needs to feed on info.
Q Skyfall, Spectre Programming nerd who delegates the field work. Has that classy Si perk bonus that the UK brings.
Twelve Doctor Who In Listen, Mummy On The Orient Express, Flatline. Very inconsistently written. Also INTJ and STJ. Poor example.
Winston Overwatch Here. A rational scientist at heart, withdrawn to his inventing, nostalgic for the days where he fit in with a group that used his understanding for good, wondering about possibilities for what could be again.

Other possibilities:

  • Violet Baudelaire, A Series of Unfortunate Events. An inventor, very Ti heavy, but without a reread I cannot conclude Ne-Si over the more immediately obvious Se-Ni. Similarly, Klaus Baudelaire has the Si and Ne side of things with his encyclopedic knowledge, but seems more ISTJ than anything. This book series, which I adored, really appealed to INTP values of reasoning to solve puzzles, connecting past knowledge to new ideas, and a detached independence against the system while wishing to peacefully live and coexist. But it might not have quite had INTP characters. Interesting.

  • Milo Thatch, Atlantis: The Lost Empire. He has the look, certainly. A bookish professor eager to explore his theories. But this could be due to the heavy Disney quality, he shows a certain passion, ambition, desire to realize, explore, and succinctly prove his ideas that doesn't fit the INTP. Maybe with a full rewatch I could be swayed, but he doesn't seem quite there on a functional level.

If you suspect an INTP character, let me know! Make your case! If I personally investigate, definitely agree, and put aside my laziness, I might update the post itself. But the comments should be a good enough record.

Following the theme of INTPs represented as robots/cyborgs, Legion from Mass Effect 2 is about as cardboard cutout INTP as you're ever going to see. ME3 had a different writing team so it may not hold up there, but ME2's Legion is unquestionably INTP.

I definitely thought Violet. ISTP is also a strong possibility, though. Dammit, I should give them a reread now. :D You totally echo my thoughts on the siblings. (Thank god someone else thinks Alice is INTP. I think movie!Alice has a stronger case for ENTP but definitely not book!Alice.).

Milo OMG I totally forgot about him! That was my favorite movie. I really think he could be INTP, actually, thinking back.

How about Luna Lovegood? I fully subscribe to her being INTP rather than INFP.

YES. (You will notice a lengthy comment to follow. I am procrastinating, mind racing, with an essay on the mental back-burner. Hooray for distractions! I'll make it in time, though.)

Alice, naturally, tries to live up to Si/Fe expectations and standards, but just keeps spiraling out. She overthinks, makes connections, gets upset about them, and loses focus and energy on her conversations. She needs to keep her hands on the wheel to stay outgoing. She's very Ne-ish, and she tries hard, but her Ti just wins.

I recall loving Atlantis, and when I went to look for clips and stuff to reference, I could feel the gravity of the nostalgia rabbit hole pulling me in. That, and Treasure Planet. Loved that Verne-ish sci-fi style both had. So I just had to quickly write something down and close those tabs before I went for full rewatches. :)

Oh, forgot to add in Luna. I really need a reread. Book Luna was definitely more thinker-y, in true Ravenclaw spirit, the core of which is very INTP radiating outward. (Charms is the best subject, too! I'd major in it. Physics + programming, to get stuff to move for you. It's the ultimate work-smarter-not-harder class.) But I don't recall if she was really absolute on the Ti side. It's not a clear, hard sell. Movie Luna, which is the fresher memory on people's minds, now intermingled with the original idea, was much closer to the line, and had some INFP-ness about her.

This sends me on a spiral of doubt and confusion and it's a total internet landmine character to bring up. Like how Sherlock Holmes (books, duh) uses all the f-in' perceiving functions, or how Jack Sparrow thinks like an ESTP but acts with the chatter and loosey goosey mannerisms of an ENTP. There are some unclear answers, places where one cannot go without taking hits. So I took Luna off the list to comment on, and forgot before submitting the post.

So my Si records are fucked and I can't find half the books. I'll find a way. arrr.

Hehe. I read an interesting argument that directly compared Luna and Hermione's reactions to Umbridge in her office in OoTP. It basically boiled down to the way Luna is distracted and distant in the face of injustices - even issues she has feelings on - while Hermione is the one who displays Fi traits. Just a specific instance, anyway.

I always got a Ti-vibe from her. She's so dispassionate about everything, and has the typical kind but cool/detached demeanor (opposing to the inner warmth of the INFP).

Suspected additions: Jeff from Curb Your Enthusiasm. In contrast to Larry David (who seems to me a fairly clear ENTP and in many ways the show is about his struggles with his tert Fe and inf Si), Jeff is a restraining force, questioning Larry's reasoning, but never misunderstanding it. Seems to display inf Fe, especially in interactions with (ENTJ) wife Susie, whom he passively humors. A non-stereotypical example.

Mr. Bennet in Pride and Prejudice also comes to mind. Contrast his wry detachment with his wife's strong Fe in the first chapter (it seems a pretty good example of a failed INTP-ESFJ dual relationship, incidentally).

Edit: also, common mistype I see is David Mitchell's character from Peep Show. While Mitchell himself is INTP, the character is ISTJ.

Milo is an interesting one. On paper he seems like a great fit. We see him frantic and disorganized. Unloading information that he's gathered in great detail. Practically obsessed with his own ideas.

It's probably the subject that I don't identify with. Sure ancient civilizations are cool and all but I don't see the intricate theories or deep relations a supposedly isolated super developed civilization would hold.

All I can say is that anyone who wants to claim him as INTP gets a pass because I can't tell them no.

Taylor Hebert from Worm is astoundingly INTP if we're being honest.

Potentially Hank Moody from californication. Definitely more extroverted but I can see the INTP resemblance at times
