I don't want to set a precedent because people might start wanting to write article about every webcomic artist they don't like.

Same problem. Then people are going to want to re-title everything "Webcomic Title and Author in General". I think we should just stick to a particular webcomic. The Sonichu article wasn't about all the crazy stuff CWC has done. The Better Days article isn't about all the personal crap Naylor has pulled over the years.

I found some posts by gonterman burried in his wall of text blog where he says he is autistic and then that he has asperger.
Like everything gonter says, this sounds like a lie meant to get sympathy.

I simply find repulsive whenever someone uses autism or asperger as an excuse to justify their stupidity.

I wish I could punch both Gonterman and Chris-Chan on the face if I ever saw them in front of my face.

You said you were wondering what is he like… Well, from my research I conclud that he is a self pitying, manipulitive (even if all his attempts to influance others fail every time), self absorbed, egotistical, lazy lunatic. Also he is naive, pretty dumb and delusional about his own skill level. He suffers from serious problems of fear of inadequacy, which he is unable to overcome because he is a massive failure as a human being. Add racism, homophobia, pedophelia, a peter pen complex and a persecution complex to the mix and you have gonterman.

He is also probably a pervert. Besides hitting on little girls online he is into furry, femdom and maybe age regression. But at the same time his is afried of sex and hates corpral punishment which makes me suspect he might also have some kind of oedipal complex.

The way he acts is as follows: he lies about his past in an overblown way because he is desperate for people to pity him, and when people call him out on it he nsults them, threatens them and acts like an all around douchbag.

His stories follow a similar pattern: They swich from horrible things happening the the protaginst so everyone will feel sorry for him (because he wants pity) and then to him being super awesome (because it's david's wish fullfilment Mary Sue) then killing or otherwise hurting his opposition (with the power david wishes he had in real life) and back to feeling sorry for himself.

I want to be clear about this:

Reading into what he's done, I have to agree. In addition to the fetishes, I've noticed a penchant for transgenderism in his newer submissions. Several of his art pieces (haha, art) depict men being either tricked or forced into wearing a female fursuit. Most of them have no objections when it happens.

It also appears that rather than use introspection or rationalism to better himself, he believes that justification is good enough. And when that justification doesn't work, instead of attempting to understand why it didn't work, he will allow his emotions to get the better of him and attempt to justify why the justification didn't work. This seems to fall back on the egotism, with a hint of narcissism.

Some of those gender bender things were comissioned (seriously, someone paid him money to draw something for him). But in Sccarlet P.I and in Foxfire it was all David's doing.

Hot damn, that's kind of funky. I mean, I know that porn artists usually have to put up with weird requests (as with Ghastly), but the fact that he does it on his own still raises some questions. It actually doesn't surprise me that he was given money to draw stuff since it seems like most of the perverted side of the furry fandom will pay for any hint at getting their rocks off.

I find it interesting, to say the least, and I look forward to the article.

At the end of the day, David Gonterman means well. He's a man trying to tell a story.

Meaning well and doing well are two different things entirely. He misuses words. His dialogue is clunky and sounds unnatural; all parties sound like David talking to himself. His 'original characters' are cheap knock-offs of established characters, when he's not out-and-out rewriting canon characters like Sally Acorn and Mickey Mouse. The fetishes featured in his old works still run rampant even today, but not nearly to the point of blatant self-gratification like some of his past comics and 'fanficts'.

This current project he's working on, The Ballad of Johnny Briz, true to Gonterman's plagiarist form, is basically ripping off a paraphrasing of how Walt Disney thought up Mickey Mouse. …Except 'Walt' is an incredibly top-heavy woman, and Mickey is some constellation consisting of Johnathan Brisby's name and body coloration, Feivel Mousekewitz's head, Mickey Mouse's build, Sonic the Hedgehog's attitude and Kermit the Frog's humility and sincerity. I only know this because David has used each of these characters by name when describing his original character here and there. He can't stop himself from referencing more successful works to describe his ideas, so everyone basically says he's ripping off better work. I have tried to stop him from doing this, and at times it's like trying to turn water into wine and ending up with sour grapes; sometimes it works, but the result is hardly satisfying.

I know a lot of the project's inner workings and what's going to happen down the line, mostly because Davey tends to spoil his work for everyone himself and less so that I'm the one editing his writing and trying to teach him to draw people that don't look god-awful. Of course, a lot of the later plot is tentative and subject to change, but the comic has to make it that far to tell; Given his history of abandoning ship at the outset of his comics, I don't think it'll matter much in the long run.

Having actually talked to him (online, not in-person), he's not on the level of Tim Buckley, Jay Naylor or Dave Cheung anymore as far as being an asshole is concerned. He's just not that good at communicating, and has no shame in making his private fetishes public, while not understanding why those behaviors get him in trouble. He clings to his god-awful reputation because he seems to think that's better than not being talked about at all.

I don't understand in what way he "means well".
Everything he does is painfully masturbatory. Scarlet P.I more than anything… The new comic is the first thing he has ever done in which the main character is not obviously him, but it's still a story complaining about cartoons not staying exactly as they were when he was a child being bad because he doesn't like it and crying about the fact that actually working in the cartoon industry is not like a 10 year old would imagine (I.E - making your own cartoons and owning them) something every adult understood when he was 14.

I don't think he means well… Or in a way I think he means well the same way fucking hitler meant well. Pretty much honestly believing that if his selfish desires that make no sense in the real world were to come true everyone would benefit.

What I meant by 'He means well' is that his intent isn't aimed to be inflammatory. He's not out to make people mad, raise some hell and be a general overgrown idiot child like he used to do. He's just completely disconnected from how the real world operates. I have no idea if he's actually more mentally disabled than he admits to — Autism be damned — but his writing and nearly exhibitionist tendencies must come from somewhere. He's just so… socially retarded. That social retardation is probably what makes him such a spectacle; This guy puts his really weird fetishes on full and public display. The fact that I know more about his bedroom fantasies than I know about him as a person is staggering; I mean, we all know Tarantino had a thing for feet, but it wasn't the focal point of his work like David's work was and is.

He's someone trying to find acceptance in a world that doesn't like the things he consciously puts out for everyone to see. He's tried project after project, but gives up and returns to the start when his fans don't emerge from the ether to praise him. He's proving Einstein's quote about insanity; Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

Did he ever actually try to be intentionally inflammatory like you say? I think whenever he did that he was just angry at people who didn't like him.

Most of his "inflammatory" remarks stem from that social retardation I mentioned earlier. His old work had disclaimers that threatened the people who would seek legal action for his misuse of their property, baiting them and snarking off 'come and get me' like a goddamn child who was proud of misbehaving. All of which started because he was hating on gay people in the Sailor Moon fandom. Again, the man is socially inept, which is probably the root cause of all the problems he brought on himself.

I think he honestly believed he might get in trouble with the law over this… I mean, he honestly thought his comics will steal fans from Sailor Moon as revenge for them not exporting the new seasons to the US, and he honestly thought that people are intimidated by him… I doubt he was trying to bait anyone.

Maybe baiting isn't the proper term for it, but I definitely remember him writing disclaimers involving roboticizing people or generally telling lawyers to go fuck off.

For someone acting so careful about getting in trouble — writing disclaimers, putting the Mature Audiences filter on pictures that didn't need it, etc. — he sure does like stealing more popular ideas to "remix" into vague copies of his own work.

I'm curious to see what you've culminated in your article, to be honest. I've talked to a few others about Davey himself, and in have about 60 back-and-forth notes on DA that are full of theories and hilarious insight you might find useful, if you want it.

I read pretty much every article about him online, every comic and fanfic he made and every blog post (even one of his books) dug up a bunch of lost stuff and a few days ago I cantacted someone who used to be on the old PoE and might be able to get me some of the deleted Gonterman content from there (although I doubt it because he used to troll PoE and everyone there hates him so they might not be inclined to help)

it will take some time to get all of the conversations and theories written down and formatted for a much easier read. If I can put them all in a text file, would that be able to be sent in a private message? His journal is sprinkled with wangst about his self-inflicted wounds, I'll have to include relevant links.

Closest thing Davey has done physically to himself is threaten to drink himself to death. He doesn't have the guts to do anything to himself; I meant he's done all the damage to his reputation himself, either through his awful fan fiction or terrible art.

It's mostly finished. There is still a little thing I need photoshoped for me, but more than that on this wiki there was A function I was about to use for this review that does not exist on mediawiki. I need to set it up as a widget but I have no idea how to do that. The regular instructions don't work and shoutwiki help section doesn't help either. I asked one of the staff if there is any way to have a widgets on the wiki but I have yet to get a replay. I need to wait and see what he says and if he says no I have to find another way around it.
