My view is ppl are misunderstanding this. The "trusty system" – which existed for decades & included a likely *commutation – is a good thing

Trusty system is paternalistic and a relic of the "house" slave role, but also is less awful than modern style mass incarceration.

Historically, the end result of the trusty system was a *commutation* – for a man who would otherwise die in prison. 1/

Also, gov's mansion is highly desired work for inmates. Unlike "trusty system," modern era max prisons often = little work/interaction 2/2

That 1 option of forced labor is preferred to others w/in system of constrained choice seems irrelevant to what we think of it, & of system.
