Science was ignored today. The decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement stands in stark opposition to overwhelming scientific consensus that human-caused climate change is real, and is an active threat to communities across the United States. This decision not only cedes Americaā€™s role as a leader in the fight against climate change, but also betrays vulnerable communities; the elderly, low-income individuals, and indigenous populations across the country will be most affected by the effects of climate change. The voices of more than one million people from across 600 cities who marched in support of evidence-based policy were ignored. The fact that this decision was made without a Presidential science advisor, a position that remains unfilled, is deeply troubling for scientists and science advocates. We urge leaders in cities, states, countries, and businesses around the world to affirm the commitments of the Paris Climate Agreement, and to take evidence-based action to continue the fight against climate change as a global threat to public health, global economies, and national security. Geological structures on Earth help us understand processes acting on other planets. Shiprock protrudes from the high desert plain of northwest New Mexico, but it resembles the vertical rock walls we see on Mars. The central formation of Shiprock consists of a 30 million-year-old volcanic neck, rising 500 meters above the surrounding desert. On Friday, the theme for our actions is Science Advocates #FUTUREOFSCIENCEĀ  IMPACTĀ  Learn about and support one of the national or local professional societies committed to advocating for underrepresented communities in STEM. EXPLORE Learn about and contribute to the collaborative People for Science and ā€œI Am A Scientistā€ campaign to break stereotypes about and by scientists. ADVOCATE Contact your governorĀ with a MFS postcard that states why you marched for science and why they should support scientific institutions and science-based policies.(Non-US marchers, look out for more information on how to participate!)
