Over the last year, we have introduced a series of new features such as free VPN and native ad blocking. Earlier this year we also presented Opera Neon, a concept browser that gave you a glimpse into the future of desktop browsers.

Now, the best parts of Neon are being brought to the new Opera browser, codenamed Reborn.

It’s time to rethink the browser

Social messengers completely changed our lives, by allowing us to work, discover new things and communicate at the same time. This shift has come with smartphones, but desktops and laptops, while theoretically more powerful multitasking tools, have been left behind.

Browsing and chatting simultaneously is cumbersome and inefficient now, as you need to switch between tabs when responding to a message. We believe this needs to change. That’s why we bring you Opera Reborn, the first browser to allow messengers to reside within your browser, without the need to install any extensions or apps.

From Neon to Reborn

Opera Neon, released in January, is an experimental browser that envisions the future of web browsers, similar to the way concept cars predict the future of automobiles. One of its novelties is the ability to seamlessly hop between discovering new content and chatting with friends, or even share online discoveries while browsing.

Inspired by Neon, we decided to bring those seamless transitions between chat and discoveries to the Opera browser. The result is Opera Reborn, complete with integrated popular messengers so you can keep chatting with friends without skipping a beat.

Chat with your friends while browsing

The included messengers are Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and Telegram. To use any of them, simply click their icon. After you log in to the site, there are two ways of using this feature: you can open it in overlay or pin it side-by-side with your current tab. Pinning a communicator allows you to combine online chatting with a full browsing experience. You can also decide which of the messengers to enable in your sidebar by selecting them under ‘Customize start page.’

If you use more than one messenger, you can easily switch between them by using our shortcut key for quicker access (⌘ + ⇧ + m on macOS, CTRL + SHIFT + m on Windows and Linux).

Give your browser a new coat of colors

Reborn is a project that is incrementally redesigning the entirety of Opera’s user experience. Apart of the new messenger experience, it brings you several UI improvements. One that you will surely fall in love with is the new colors.

Opera is now available in two color themes: light and dark. You can also select one of the cool backgrounds that perfectly complement Opera’s new look and feel. For this final release, we have prepared some completely new ones.

Both the background wallpaper and the browser’s color theme can be managed in the “customize start page” panel and in browser settings.

Fresh look and feel

Opera now has a completely new user interface that is truly modern, simplified, refined and playful.

The entire layout has been updated with a new, high-quality graphical design that is more consistent across platforms. The tabs are simplified, lighter and more elegant, making it easier to locate open tabs. The new sidebar is more subtle and refined with a touch of animation.

New icons are even more refined and elegant, and some even change colors when active. We have carefully optimized the icons for various DPIs in order to make them look perfect.

Animations make the Reborn interface more alive and playful. The most visible one can be found when opening private mode.

More control over ad blocking

Apart of completely new user experience, the new version also brings you ad blocker improvements. Now, Opera automatically reloads a page when toggling ad blocking on or off for that page. It’s especially useful if you want to quickly flip the switch, and it gives you much more control and comfort while browsing with ad blocker.

Also, we have added some important changes to the block list management. Now, you have control over which block lists are loaded. Easylist and EasyPrivacy are turned on by default. Other lists, including regional and custom lists, can now be managed through the “Manage Lists…” dialog.

Performance and security changes

Most graphics processing units (GPUs) can decode videos highly efficiently. With this release, we will send even more videos to the GPU for decoding on Windows. This will allow for significantly higher framerates, higher resolutions, and lower battery usage for these videos.

Opera adds in-form warnings for sensitive fields when the top-level page is not HTTPS. Whenever you start filling in your password or credit card number on a page, which is not HTTPS, the warning will appear.

Under the hood

Opera 45 comes with Chromium 58, and there’s a bunch of changes. If you’re interested in the details of what happened under the hood, have a look at the dev.opera.com post.

Blocking from Opera 45, does not block all ads, pages. And vpn, does not load all pages.

    • Robert Tomaszewski

      Hi Łukasz,
Could you let us know some examples when Opera 45 does not load load pages, please?

      • Łukasz Janik

For example, there are ads in: wp.pl, telepolis.pl, etc, ie, on all other sites.

And when it comes to vpn, it’s https://store.playstation.com/#!/pl-en/home/gry

        • Robert Tomaszewski

Thanks Łukasz! I logged a bug report for VPN issue. When it comes to adblock it tries keeping blocking the relevant ads however it might happen the list of ads urls is a bit older than the actual world 🙂 However specifically on telepolis.pl I can see adblock works quite well in Opera 45.

          • Łukasz Janik

On other adblock sites, already badly done, the ads themselves.

            I have ublock origin back

          • firuz_u7

AdBlocker needs the ability to block the ad element on the page manually

  • nu4a

Love the new dark theme! But you need to make all other elements dark too (like menus, ad-block pop-up, download pop-up, internal pages, etc.). And here is some productive idea – add setting for auto dark mode based on the computer clock.

Good job. Please continue to make Opera better.

    • Robert Tomaszewski

      Thank you nu4a!

  • tarkus

Where do I download the off-line installer? Does Opera reborn installation interfere in any way with my current Opera Developer installation files or location? i.e. If I decide to completely and thoroughly uninstall it, will I have any problems with my Opera Developer browser functionality?

    • BK

see http://www.opera.com/computer – there is offline installer link below the big green button.
or the top right panel on this site – there is bunch of installer links provided.

Opera dev and stable have different profiles by default. Unless you’ve installed them on top of each other (in the same folder) there should be no problems.

      • tarkus

Thanks, but I didn’t realize Opera reborn is the new Opera stable! Does this mean that I can wait for the new Opera developer, in order to have everything implemented there?

        • BK

yes, more updates will come in developer first.

        • ive

All of this should be old news if you are running the developer version. Which features are you missing?

  • Davit Babayan

how can users add other websites on side panel?

    • Leonardo Gomes

      They can’t.

  • Poetivity

Every time when I launch Opera 45 she pinned up to task bar. was it planned?
    http://imgur.com/r85JTdB

    • Przemek Kudła

No, it’s a bug. The next update will fix it.

      • Poetivity

        ok, thanks 🙂

      • Nekomajin43

How about the version number? I still see 43 in the taskbar menu.

  • disqus_eaBm3OPd9I

Ugly icons on the sidebar. With the bar on, they are nice.

    • Matej Szendi

Yes, they are blurred on low dpi monitors.

      • Kornelia

Can you give me a definition of “low dpi monitors”? And send me a screenshot please?

      • Cryio

They are blurred on HiDPi monitors as well :))

  • Krzysztof Pogłódek

What about extension sidebar? I thought it is going to be moved into new sidebar, but as I can see it is not. Now I have two sidebars which one of them waste some space. It doesnt look good (see screen shot below). Are you going to merge this two in the future?

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/q8i703m6kfj7pp5/Przechwytywanie.PNG?dl=0

    • Kornelia

Right click on new sidebar and you would see extension icon there to be chosen. There is no need to have two sidebars enabled.

      • Krzysztof Pogłódek

But Im using Google Translator on daily basis and I know there is shortcut Ctrl + Shift + S to hide/see extension sidebar. But it is always another step to find it 😉

I think there is enough space for additional icons / functionalities in new sidebar. Is it technically possible to merge extension sidebar with new one? Like on below screen shot?

        https://www.dropbox.com/s/8laiubrajd1e2ye/Przechwytywanie%202.PNG?dl=0

        • Kornelia

Sorry Krzysztof, I replied too fast / I thought you’re looking for extension icon. I don’t have any information about merging those sidebars but I agree, keeping two of them is a waste of space. We will be working on that.

          • Krzysztof Pogłódek

Brillant! Hope it wont take too long 🙂

      • Nekomajin43

        Have you checked the screenshot?

        • Emanuele

They don’t even know how their browser is made…

With this new version now we have 2 sidebars (but still not a single panel toggle, nor an intelly-hide feature), an option for the tabbar background color that doesn’t work, and it seems not a single developer still noticed it or is interested in fixing these stupid things.

          • Nekomajin43

There were multiple comments about this by the devs. Merging the extension sidebar is on the list.

          • Kornelia

There is no need to offend others here Emanuele.

      • PakSae

Please refer to the following suggestion on sidebar.

        https://forums.opera.com/discussion/1883590/retain-sidebar-as-usual#Item_8

  • alex

I have a problem with adblock built-in opera. Some website alarm me to disable adblock on browser to browsing – but when i use ublock origin extension, it’s not alarm. I have the same block list on ublock origin and opera built-in ablocker.

    • Kornelia

Could you please give any example of such website please?

  • Jakub Szpejewski

Hey. Few weeks back it was said that with release of sidebar, the extension sidebar will be merged into it, it doesn’t seem it was implemented yet. When could we expect the merge of two? Asking for Stable and Developer versions.

    • Leonardo Gomes

It was said? I don’t remember have read such statement.

      • Jakub Szpejewski

Yeah. I think on one of the blog posts about developer version someone asked about double sidebar and it was said they’re gonna be merged.

  • Octavian Lari

So happy, finally dark mode! Waiting for audio & video playback integration like in Opera Neon. For now using extension streamkeys.

  • Verudone Miku

Dark mode is nice, and the design is clean and attractive. I’m glad Opera is pushing browser visual design so well.

That said, I really need to be able to add things to the sidebar for it to be at all useful. Also to remove things. A browser that ships with a Facebook Messenger icon that can be hidden but not totally removed is pretty gross.

    • redfox

Try to add some folders to the bokkmarks bar and you will se that the color scheme is badly broken.

  • Andis Spriņķis
    • Cryio

      Why … what?

      • Andis Spriņķis

        Misaligned icon.

        • Cryio

          Ah, now I see.

  • shounen

your vpn is sh… it’s blacklisted by many including mail services

    • komrath

      It’s surf easy ;_)

  • Built-in Fecebook stuff, fuck no.

    • Nekomajin43

It is only a shortcut, a bookmark. No fb stuff is integrated into the code.

      • TianlanSha

A shortcut that you can only unpin but not completely remove/delete from the browser. If it’s built-in and can’t be completely removed, it MUST be in the code, it most certainly doesn’t hide inside the monitor.

        • Nekomajin43

It is a bookmark, similar to those you can add to the bookmarks bar.

          • TianlanSha

But you can’t delete it, you can just unpin it, with actual bookmarks you can delete them if you don’t want them. What’s the point of your comment again?

          • Nekomajin43

Look, I hate preselected content, and I think it’s not the good way to do this whole messenger thing, but the whining about facebook stuff, which is not there is very annoying.

          • TianlanSha

They did it to themselves, I just said I hate it and uninstalled Opera. I only installed it to test the new theme and stuff. I use Vivaldi, by the same guy who made Opera and left it around the time it was sold to the Chinese.

That aside, I don’t care about it, I’d uninstall Vivaldi too if they pushed such garbage. I hate when they tell me what to do or think they can make choices for me, to this I say “up yours” and I leave the scene.

          • LamiaLove

Actually, he left 5 years before that.

          • TianlanSha

Yeah, I was wrong, but he left, because he didn’t feel the way Opera was going was how he imagined it… I just don’t know why he stepped down as CEO, because he could’ve still controlled it and Opera now would’ve been an actual browser worthy of use and Vivaldi wouldn’t have existed… maybe family reasons or whatever… well… what’s done is done.

          • Leonardo Gomes

Maybe the (previous) owners have decided to put someone else, don’t know.

          • TianlanSha

Whatever it is, I find it hard to use this Opera lacking so many features in the customization department that I want and having so many features that I don’t want/need/would prefer as extensions.

          • LamiaLove

Actually, CEOs are not always the supreme leaders that people might think. CEOs must be approved and given permission for things by the board of directors/investors/stuff. If the board is set on doing some bad strategy but the CEO does not agree, they will just kick him out, unless he gets pissed before that and quits.

          • TianlanSha

I did not know that, I don’t know much about what happened in Opera. I think Jon von Tetzchner was the one who came up with Opera originally, how come he got demoted (himself?) and for what reason, I don’t know. In the last days of Opera 12, I remember that Presto was having troubles displaying many websites properly, but what happens now with the current Opera and how it’s becoming a casual user-friendly browser, rather than the power user-friendly browser it used to be, I wonder what is it that they are trying to achieve. Because even as a casual browser, Chrome, which I despise is still superior in every department compared to this Opera, which only has built-in VPN and adblock going for itself, which are originally off by default so they are useless. And this is because every user who goes on a quest to block ads or use vpn will most likely go for extensions and any such user would know that the built-in adblock in Opera is inferior to uBlock. But the VPN is quite good, though.

    • TianlanSha

Exactly, one more reason not to use this browser. Might as well call it Facebook’s bottom b**ch.

  • Nekomajin43

I only hope you make general web panels (and removing the preselected stuff at the same time) top priority in v46.

  • Mateusz

Great, that you changed this ugly gray folder bookmark icons for something more colorful 🙂

  • Bali505

    /Me speedily installing… 😀

  • Nekomajin43

The icons on the navbar and the battery icon on the toolbar are blurry.

    • Kornelia

      Already reported that issue. Thanks.

  • Mike

Should I be seeing a different colour for the tab area when the window is either active or inactive (Windows 10)? It’s the same grey regardless of whether Opera is active or not!

    • Cryio

      It’s a “Reborn feature”, lmao.

They really borked this release of Opera.

  • Piotr

  • Loysek

How to re-enable private mode animation if it’s disabled?

    • Kornelia

Good point 🙂 I think it’s not possible at the moment.

    • L33t4opera

Hi, you can re-enable it in the “Preferences” file (find the path in Opera's Menu > About Opera > Paths > Profile) as follows:
      1. Close the Opera, make a copy of the file (in case, that something goes wrong, you can overwrite it with the copy), and open the “Preferences” file in your text editor,
      2. Search for "welcome_page_enabled":false, and replace “false” with “true”, save the changes, close the file, and relaunch the Opera.

      • Loysek

Hm no luck – but I appreciate the help.
I once disabled it in beta but the dialog on stable was not even prompted (maybe there lies a problem?)
It’s nothing important – I was just curious.

        • L33t4opera

Hi, I see, it works here without a problem in both: Opera stable, and beta. Perhaps there’s some other issue with your current profile. if you’re curious enough, you can add another shortcut to the “launcher.exe”, and edit it to run the Opera, using second profile, as in the following example: “pathtolauncher.exe” –user-data-dir=”pathtoprofile2″and check if it works under this fresh profile.

    Still “security” concerns?

    • BK

Yes, and sorry, but there are no plan to change it.

      • Nekomajin43

It is one of the most wanted features on the fan survey.

      • Falconet

        Well that sucks.

Bug report: When right clicking near the bottom, the context menu opens higher than where the cursor is instead of the bottom left of the menu being at the cursor position!

  • Sergento

Opera stopped working on my workplace after update to 45. Just says the Internet connection is blocked. How can I return to 43? Seems that otherwise I’ll must use another browser 🙁

    • redfox

Download the old version from their FTP server and block autoupdate. However, there is no warranty that an older version will remain fully working in the future, esp. the VPN function. I can still remember how they blocked Opera 39 from using VPN recently, and thus forced me to update.

    • BK

Hi, do you have some custom firewall perhaps?

      • Sergento

there’s firewall on the local network. but other browsers work and Opera worked just before update

        • Leonardo Gomes

Maybe the ones responsible for the firewall need to allow the new version?

  • Munchy

Microsoft restrictions and removal of features led me to try opera. I use it and like it a lot. This seems to be getting better and better. I can see day soon where I won’t be using any microsoft browser. After all edge doesn’t let you open new tabs on your default home page.

  • Roby

Why does the sidebar have to be pinned permanently and be always visible for me to use WhatsApp? Can’t it auto hide or something while I’m not using it? Makes some sites like YouTube change their layout for the worse because they don’t have as much horizontal space.

    • Night Man

that will be Good . i am with you

    • Shion

    • Vivian Castle

great application , i always use opera everyday..

u can try visit my website in http://www.majalahmandiri.com atau di http://www.mandiri88.org

  • duhduhduh0

No more rounded edges for the tabs? 🙁

    • redfox

Agreed. We need to have the option to turn off the Reborn UI completely, but the devs are not listening at all.
Btw., why is it named “reborn”? Opera never looked that way. It only reminds me of the recent game Dreamfall Chapters, but it isn’t connected with Opera either.

      • duhduhduh0

I do not think they will do a rollback though. The idea of having ‘chats’ inside the browser is great, but the implementation via sidebar is questionable though. The side bar has always been hideous since it was revealed.

I really do not understand why rounded edges are allowed for the Speed Dials thumbnails and browser address bar but no rounded edges for the browser tabs.

      • Leonardo Gomes

The new UI is not and additional UI that you can select like a theme or something like that, it’s how Opera will look for now on.

So having an option to disable it wouldn’t make much sense.

If you don’t like something, you can just point it out – preferably pointing out objective reasons for that – and maybe they can change things in the future.

        • redfox

Implementing an option to “return” rounded tabs or use a different folder color requires only a very small change in the code. Don’t know why they insist on these changes, if (Win7) users don’t like it.

          • Leonardo Gomes

What about opera://flags/#reborn-win7-aero-skin? May work for now.

    • Ghirahim

      Thank God for that!

  • redfox

Why don’t you pulish the full screenshots including bookmarks bar with folder icons in the article, in order that anybody could see their ugly blue-green colors?

  • Emanuele

And still no fix for the system color on the tabbar (but we have an option for it in preferences… I wonder who the hell is testing your stuff nowadays)

And now we have also two different sidebars instead of a single one… but your designers made a very beautiful mockup, so who cares of fixing all the inconsistencies while you develop it in real code. (or adding a panel toggle, or an intellyhide feature, and so on…)

Well, I’ll stay with the previous version, thanks.

    • Leonardo Gomes

The system color issue may be a bug or it may be that the setting just became outdated.

What do you mean by two different sidebars?

      • Nekomajin43

Really? The new one and the extension sidebar…

        • Leonardo Gomes

          Really what?

Ah, right. I guess extensions sidebar is not that widely used so anything related to it may not be top priority.

          • Nekomajin43

It seems to me that nothing is top priority.

      • Emanuele

About the sidebars: the new one and the extensions sidebar… something that seems even developers were not aware about O_o …

system color: a final (stable) product that offers a BUGGED new feature OR an outdated option? Who test it? Or, better, is there still anyone who make some test?

this happens when you substitute developers with designers… but hey! we have a very good looking software now, who cares about functionality, bug, or what-else?

        • Leonardo Gomes

The system color issue is far from being a show stopper so there is no reason for them to prevent a release because of it.

          • Emanuele

Nope, why a developer should stop a bugged feature to be released in the stable channel?

          • Leonardo Gomes

Welcome to real world. 🙂 Stable versions of softwares have bugs too. Trying to fix all of them before a release would make almost any software to be released so they try to fix the ones that may have a higher impact in user experience and let the others to be fixed in a future build.

          • Emanuele

Nope. You can release an initial version of a new feature. If you release a BUGGED new feature you’re an idiot. That is all.

And, even worse, if the option to use system color is still in preferences as an error, Opera developers, testers, and management, are all a bunch of idiots.

          • Leonardo Gomes

Oh, nice arguments. Anyway, thanks for revealing your true face.

          • Nekomajin43

It has been requested since the very first reborn build. There are no excuses about this. It was a very bad idea to throw away all the native UI implementations. The sidebar and the new buttons do not justify it.

          • Leonardo Gomes

Well, requesting something do not make it a major issue.

          • Nekomajin43

Completely destroying the native UI-s is a major issue.

  • kj

I’m using self-signed certs for my private wesites installed into Trusted Root CA. It worked well until today. Now Opera keeps asking if I want to continue browsing every time.

    It’s a bug or feature?

  • Night Man

1 The VPN Button Look Very Ugly and sketchy . Fix it
2 and the taps on Bookmark bar very Big
3 Fix the Folder Color to Gray again
4 the Icones in the new sidebar they are very Big . if the Sidebar smaller will be ok

that is all and Great Work the Browser is amazing

    • redfox

      + rounded tabs

      • Nachiketa Ramesh

        – rounded tabs, would go with osx but ruin the look on windows

        • Nekomajin43

Not on Win7. It’s native there.

          • Nachiketa Ramesh

exactly, its os and version specific.

        • redfox

I use Windows 7. Sharp tabs look weird there.

          • Nachiketa Ramesh

Depends on the OS, but Opera should look native to the OS its being run on IMO.

      • Ghirahim

        – rounded tabs

    • Herr Pietrus

For me icons on the new sidebar are OK when it’s pinned, but they’re TOO SMALL if the sidebar is unpinned.

  • duhduhduh0

Wow no one bothered to merge the Extension Sidebar to this Sidebar? 🙁

    • Krzysztof Pogłódek

Yea, I pointed that out few comments below.

    • Leonardo Gomes

Why and how they should be merged? They seem to have different purposes.

      • Nachiketa Ramesh

Because, again having TWO persistent sidebars looks completely wrong.

  • Nachiketa Ramesh

I really love opera, but theres a lot wrong with the UI this time around, and its basically all got to do with finesse. None to do with design.

    – All the wireframe icons in the url bar are blurry, see for yourself
    – All the wireframe icons are thicker and smaller than the regular ones in 44 and dont get larger in tablet mode.
    – The sidebar wireframe icons are a bit thick and are inconsistent with the url bar ones, because the url bar ones are blurry
    – Why are there two speed dial icons (one on the url bar and one on the sidebar)?
    – The VPN icon is really bad, it looks pixelated

    Problems:
    – The space above the tabs when not maximized is super ugly
    – The minimize, maximize and exit buttons are massive and inconsistent compared to any other window
    – The gray doesn’t fit in with Windows the way the old 44 version did
    – Also text on background tabs look a little blurry, though that just might be me.

    Dark Mode: http://imgur.com/a/K2vNr

    – Also, why don’t you make the sidebar fully black? The many shades of gray in the sidebar and top with dark mode is really bad. And it would fit better with the Windows 10 aesthetic you had in 44.

    – Also, why not make the social media icons wireframe too? Maybe with colored backgrounds? They would fit better into the UI then.

The UI feels unfinished, you should have delayed the release IMO.

Running Windows 10 at 1080p and 100% dpi scaling.

    • Cryio

If you think that’s bad, you should see how it looks like on a HiDPi device on Windows 10. Even worse.

    • Herr Pietrus

      – The minimize, maximize and exit buttons are massive and inconsistent compared to any other window
      – The gray doesn’t fit in with Windows 10 the way the old 44 version did

I think that’s the minor issue. Since they provided native theme support for Windows 7 and native window controls on Mac, they could design more finesse buttons for windows
Not mentioning the gradient, which is completely out of place. Flat design everywhere and gradient on the bar?!

  • Ivan Sushkevich

The Windows 10-esque title bar looks really out of place on Win 8.
Is there no way to remove the FB and WA buttons from the sidebar? That would be a shame.

    • Nachiketa Ramesh

right click on the sidebar and uncheck them

      • Ivan Sushkevich

        Thanks.

    • Cryio

It looks out of place even on Windows 10, because those are not native buttons.

What about DNA-53282? I’m disappointed with Reborn, nothing changed at all. Where is the revolution?

    • Kornelia

What kind of installation do you have. Also, could you please check opera://flags/#media-router if its is enabled?

      • verter

Standard installation. The flag is set as default.

Oh no… another ugly changes… I really hate new look. You don’t care, I know. Pffff…

      • Ivan Sushkevich

Make the titlebar buttons standard again, please.

        • Ivan Sushkevich

Or better give the users a choice…

      • Nekomajin43

        – On Win7, the UI still lacks native elements like rounded corners, and 3D-ish gradient on the toolbar.

        – The background tabs are too light, there is not enough contrast with the active tab.

        – The tab menu button is misaligned on Win7. (Don’t tell me you did not have time to move it a few pixels lower in the beta phase! You just don’t give a damn.)

        – Some icons are blurry on the navbar and the toolbar.

        – The dark theme looks unfinished. Most of the extension icons were designed to fit the light theme, and they look ugly or not visible at all. You should set a lighter background for the buttons.

        • BK

          thx for input.
          What DPI do you use?

          • Nekomajin43

            Default settings on 1366×768.

            – One thing I missed from the last comment: The toolbar buttons would be better with a bit more line width. Something between the current and the previous buttons on Win7.

          • BK

ok, this is very strange, we are investigating. Can you perhaps post some screenshots of the blurry stuff you see?

          • Nekomajin43

            http://imgur.com/E31oTlO

The navbar (on the right) is zoomed 90%, (because we still can’t zoom the speed dial independently!!!), but it looks very similar on 100%.

I guess it can be because of the thinner line width and/or anti-aliasing, but if you go with this flat style then everything must look crisp sharp.

          • Vux777

more than a 6 months ago you changed size of toolbar icons
extension developers were placing usually 19x19px images for default toolbar icon (as instructed)
even when other sizes are declared, they are not used ( I have set of 16,19,32,48, 64 and 128 sizes), but only if I stricly declare 16x16px image as default one, it’s not blurry anymore

        • Five-One-Three

Windows 7 is insanely old at this point and about to be dropped from support by its developer… im just glad they actually bothered to do anything for it.

          • Nekomajin43

And it has 50% of the desktop market share. No more questions.

Btw, it does not have native UI on Linux, OS X and not even properly on Win10.

          • Nachiketa Ramesh

That point hits so hard. No native ux anywhere this release. They broke everything they had achieved.

          • Five-One-Three

Wasnt a question. It was a statement. The majority of those still on Windows 7 are legacy enterprise users that are locked into Internet Explorer by their company. Windows 10 already eclipsed 7 on Steam which is a pretty good benchmark for people that would use a browser like Opera.

No more stupid statements from you.

          • Nekomajin43

And from where do you get those data?

          • Five-One-Three

            Steam

          • Nekomajin43

So Steam has data, that “The majority of those still on Windows 7 are legacy enterprise users that are locked into Internet Explorer by their company.” OK.

          • Five-One-Three

Oh, you must not have a job in the real world…

          • Nekomajin43

How about you stop the assumptions and accept that despite its age, Win7 is still the most used desktop OS on the market? And on top of that, it’s still officially supported by both MS and Opera.

          • Five-One-Three

Sure, its the most used by legacy enterprise devices that often cant download third party browsers due to IT locks. Youre correct, thats an important market to hit if your designing third party browsers

          • Nekomajin43

When will you show me the source of this assumption?

          • Five-One-Three

            Its not an assumption

          • Nekomajin43

            Then show me the data!

          • Leonardo Gomes

Not everyone upgrade to the newest version of an OS as soon as it is released. Many users, specifically ‘non tech’ ones, will use their versions until it’s possible or someone says them to upgrade.

Not to mention that upgrading may require a new hardware, what not everyone wants or can buy.

There are people still using XP and Vista nowadays.

          • Five-One-Three

the vast majority of people running Win7+ can easily run Win10, its not a support issue

          • redfox

            Windows 10 is a mistake.

          • Five-One-Three

            LOL, Classic.

          • Cryio

Given XP was supported by most web browsers up until last year I think, Windows 7 will be easily supported until 2023.

        • Herr Pietrus

Gradient? There was a gradient somewhere in the Opera before the Opera 45? 🙂 Personally i don;t miss anything.
But I agree – last tabs menu is misaligned. Personally I still think that it should remain on it’s previous place in the same row the tabs are displayed.
And of course there is a problem with favicons (size and blurriness) but it’s only a bug, not the design problem.
The only ugly thing is the dark theme.

          • Nekomajin43

            The toolbar had a gradient.

          • Herr Pietrus

You mean that bar with the address field and extensions settings?..
So it seems that I haven’t sen it because I don’t use default Win7 theme.
But on the screenshots the bar was always flat too…

          • Nekomajin43

It was subtle, but went to a bit darker to the bottom.

Or did I just imagine it? Someone should confirm it, or not. 🙂

    • Herr Pietrus

I wouldn’t say it’s ugly, perhaps it has some minor issues, but it’s generally fine… as it was.

  • Random Commentator

Did automatic updating stop working at some point? I’m still at 43.0.2442.1144. I have chosen to deliberately not try ‘about Opera’ to see if it updates some day but no luck yet. BTW, I don’t see this comment box with Opera 43. Had to use Firefox to comment.

  • MdN

I don’t mind the changes in design (finally the tabs aren’t rounded) but it doesn’t work with every theme on Xubuntu/Xfce. The right-click menu pop-up (or when I click on Menu or open a folder on the bookmarks bar) is always white, so right now with Numix theme I’m having light grey text on white background, barely visible. It used to be light grey text on dark background. If I change to a theme with black text on menus, it displays correctly, but I hate to change the theme just for the browser…

  • Yuval Bugajski

Can anyone help me with this? I can’t see the menu, it’s completely white

    • BK

Hi, have you been personalizing your OS settings? How do other apps menus look like?

      • Yuval Bugajski

I found a solution and I don’t like it: If I change my system (Xubuntu) theme from Numix to Adwaita all menus will appear again. I don’t like this new theme and the changes it makes to my OS look. I think I will downgrade to the previous Opera version.

  • Patricia Jesus

since the update, it’s been real slow. is there any thing i can do?

    • BK

Hm.. PC restart does not help, I suppose?
Can you define what slow means? Slow to start, slow to open webpage, slow to respond on mouse clicks? Do you see your CPU usage being unusual?

      • Patricia Jesus

i have restarted but it didn’t help
slow to open webpage, and to start
the CPU is at 90% and it’s not usual to do that

        • BK

CPU usage is 90% only after you start Opera? If so, can you try to kill your tabs in the session? Perhaps one of the webpages hangs.

        • Robert Tomaszewski

          Hi Patricia,
          What platform/system do you have?

          • Patricia Jesus

            windows 10 pro

        • Ramsey

Try disabling VPN and report back if that works to reduce CPU usage.

          • CUF|Cyl3erunion

My Opera 45 on my work PC (with minimal specs, Win 8,1) is very slow as well – slow to start up, slow to load, slow to respond to a click of button / tickbox, slow to switch tabs. Actions that used to take less than 1 sec in Opera 44 now take up to a few seconds to complete. It has become slower on my home PC as well, but the change is not very noticeable because my home PC has high specs. Will this be fixed in Opera 46? I’m using Opera for sync with my home PC, so having a fast browser on my work PC is important… unless you wish me to switch to Vivaldi when they have sync…

I have a feeling it is causing my work PC to slow down in general as well… the other softwares lag a little more with Opera in the background.

There is this uncomfortable delay between clicking on a button on the sidebar and the page appearing. It seems the page is drawn up only after the animation for the button is completed. Can you fix this to start drawing up the page at the instant the button is clicked, rather than to make us wait for the animation to finish?

    • Cryio

It should be faster, since the browser is doing less work as before, being blurry and all that and given Picture in Picture is now better hardware accelerated.

    • BK

Can you also let us know what OS do you use?

      • Patricia Jesus

        windows 10 pro

  • S1GOR

    Great update ! thanks !

  • Help me decide: what is really better – Opera x64 or x86?

    • BK

depends how much RAM do you have? If above 4GB, x64 should be better for you.

  • Cryio

Besides the tons of issues already reported, some new ones that I hadn’t noticed earlier.

    1. Speed Dials do not get highlighted over mouse over like in the 4th image
    2. On a HiDPi device, when having a tab open with sound in it, the sound equalizer playing in the tab’s favicon is so incredibly small, it’s almost impossible to see.
    3. Picture in Picture: There is now black chrome/edge at the left and right of the video for whatever reason. And when you want to resize the video, you still grab the edge of the actual video and not the new black edges.
    5. The blurriness of the UI makes me physically sick, haha
    6. On Window 10 at least, there is virtually no difference when Opera is the selected program and when it’s not.

    • Nekomajin43

I think the cursor change and the menu button in the top right corner is enough animation.

      • Cryio

        Huh?

        • Nekomajin43

          1.

  • Tro

In my opinion inactive tabs should be darker. It is difficult to distinguish active tab and inactive tabs.

    • In which mode: like or dark?

      • Nekomajin43

Light. The current hover color would be better for background, and even darker for hover.

      • Tro

        Light

  • Cryio

Ok, yeah, tried to use this for about 1 hour. I feel ill. Uninstalled. Back to v44.

    • I can understand your problem with blurred image. We’ll fix. In the meanwhile enjoy O44.

      • Cryio

Happily enjoying v44 ^.^. I can even wait until v46 if you guys fix everything.

When will you be bringing it to the Windows Store?

    • Cryio

Never. They need to use Edge’s rendering engine to bring it to the Store. They won’t bother and I understand them.

      • Nachiketa Ramesh

They dont need to use Edge’s rendering engine to bring it into the store. Thats not how the Windows Store works. Where did you get that info from? They can bring it without any modification to their code as is. They dont even need to make it UWP.

        • Nico

          It’s a Windows Store rule:

          http://www.windowscentral.com/dont-expect-googles-chrome-browser-come-windows-10-s

So yes, they need to use the same engine, Edge is using. And that’s exactly how the Windows Store works.

          • Nachiketa Ramesh

            Well thats stupid.

        • Jordan Davenport

Cryio is correct. Microsoft is refusing browsers converted with the Desktop Bridge for “security” reasons. Aside from a virtualized registry and directory structure, converted applications apparently run with full security permissions. Additionally, a rule in the Windows Store developer guidelines stipulates that all browsers in the store must use EdgeHTML and their JavaScript engine. I’m replying from my phone, or else I’d link you.

        • Cryio

There is an app guideline about “apps that browse the web need to use the Edge rendering engine”.

      • Five-One-Three

        Oh well, Edge it is

  • LoverOfLife

Please, add more colours! Only 2 (dark & blueish) is not enough. What about “Show system color on top bar” on windows 10 ? I don’t want to move on windows 7 for transparency on top bar. I expect an answer.

    • What other colors would you like to see?
“Show system color on top bar” – noted.

      • Eugene Tareyev

Just give as a color pickup like in Vivaldi.

        • Leonardo Gomes

I guess they would have to redo all the UI to allow that.

      • LoverOfLife

        Custom colors would be nice

  • andy-drew

In Ubuntu (17.04) is it normal that I don’t see the specific Opera repository in “Software & Updates” (“Other Software” tab)?

Don’t forget that you need to block auto-update, other wise it will upgrade to 45 again.

      • Jordan

How do I block auto-update in Opera 43 or 44? I can’t find the settings for this under Settings/Advanced…/Privacy-Security?

        • Leonardo Gomes

There is no setting for it. You may try renaming the auto-update executable in Opera’s installation folder.

          • Jordan

Thank you. Could you point me to the right file name?

          • Leonardo Gomes

            opera_autoupdate.exe

          • Jordan

Thanks again. I renamed the autoupdater and then tried to install ver. 44-stable over my existing 43-stable and things didn’t quite work out. I restored to the prior condition (via backup) and would like to do it again, correctly.

In my Win10 desktop, Opera is in ProgramFiles (x86)Opera and inside this there are 2 version subdirectories. I know I can create another subdirectory of the version 44-stable, with the same directory file name format, drop the update file in it and then install it there: Would that be the correct procedure to follow?

BTW, as I’m typing this, I see the Opera Menu flag is now in read, indicating an update needs to be installed. This is *after* I renamed the auto-updater. Any suggestions?

            Thank you!

          • Thomas Sawyer

            1) Get a previous version from here: http://get.geo.opera.com/ftp/pub/opera/desktop/
            2) Install it and override the current one, then close it when it opens
            3) Go to ProgramFiles (x86)Opera and delete the old 4* folders there, then enter the new one and delete/rename opera_autoupdate.exe
            4) Open the task scheduler and delete the Opera update scheduler

I updated Opera, now every time I launch it I pin it to the Windows bar. I use Opera on a daily basis but I do not need it there.

    • Leonardo Gomes

      It’s a known issue.

      • jojoPL1987

        OK.

    • Przemek Kudła

It’s a bug. The fix will be released in the next update.

  • Mihail Algente Klochkov

The old extension sidebar does not work correctly in v45. The extensions still open but I can’t type in a single letter anymore. It’s crucial for me. Have to go back to 44.

  • jojoPL1987

    Two bugs:
    1. I have unselected “View card previews” but I have preview card.
    2. After turning the Opera I have a blue dot next to the icon to download (in the sidebar and on the right side of the download), although the last did not receive anything.

      What is a card?

The blue dot issue is known.

        Preview tab.

        • L33t4opera

Hi, this option is to enable/disable previews of tabs, when you hover your mouse over the tab title. If you want to disable it, when you cycle through tabs using keyboard shortcuts, please follow the below steps:
          1. Go to opera:settings/configureCommands,
          2. Remove the default key bindings for “Cycle backward through tabs” / “Cycle forward through tabs”,
          3. Scroll down to “Switch left through tabs” / “Switch right through tabs”, and add Ctrl+Shift+Tab / Ctrl+Tab for these functions.

You can also use the default shortcuts: Ctrl+PageUp / Ctrl+PageDown.

          • jojoPL1987

Precisely, the unwanted preview is only in the “open tab” list next to the 3 Windows buttons.

          • L33t4opera

I see now, that you mean the tab menu (the list in the pop-up window). As far as I know, it can’t be disable there for the time being. Though, it would be nice, if the Developers could reprogram this feature in the way, that if you disable it in the Settings, it will also disable it in the menu.

          • Alan Vázquez

Thank you so much! I was going mad ’cause I couldn’t switch between tabs. This worked great.

          • L33t4opera

            You’re welcome 😉

    • Przemek Kudła

      1. “Show tab previews” enables/disables the preview in case you hover mouse on a tab. It doens’t affect the preview you can see in the tab menu. Did you mean this?
      2. This may be a bug, but without reproduction steps it’s difficult to say what is wrong. Some pages may start a download automaticaly, it might happen that one of the tabs from you session triggered the download.

      • jojoPL1987

        1. Yes, that’s exactly what I mean. In my opinion, turning off the card preview should refer to the cards themselves but also the “card menu”.
        2. I checked when all pages were loaded.

But they’ve added native Windows themes support… Ok, I still doesn’t like modern icons, but fortunately rest of the browser looks better than totally flat and modern Vivaldi. Other functionality remained the same, they added almost perfect adblock ( unfortunately it doesn’t let you choose some adverts manually, especially popular on some sites pop-ups with recommended articles), communicators can be disabled…

    • Cryio

It didn’t die, it was just a very major misstep. But yeah, I can’t use v45 as well. I’ll remain on v44 until they fix most issues.

So how do we disable these new “features”?

  • Eugene Galonsky

Please pay attention to retina displays.
Icons of embedded pages are very small:
    https://gyazo.com/cd235481c283474f6cf36277e0bff3df

  • With the last update, browser RAM consumption is higher… something like 13-15% more than v44, even without using all the chat pins.

    • Jarek

I have the same issue + I CPU usage is much much higher like ~20% on v45 (on v44 I had ~3%)

    • BK

Hi, what OS do you use?

      • Windows 10 Pro A.U.

      • Mapantz

Yep – I concur. Both RAM and CPU have increased dramatically for me, since updating. Not what I was hoping for.

  • Marco Pedrosa

Awesome! Love it!! Now lets get rid of tabs and the URL bar! Lets work them into the sidebar as well!

    • Marc

      Lol, are you high?

      • Marco Pedrosa

Not really, just tired of browsers stagnating for 20 years.

We’ve evolved webapps way past what the old back/forth URL bar and tabs paradigm were designed to deal with. We’re long overdue for disruption in what a browser can be.

If opera wants to lead the charge I’m all for it. Did you ever try their Coast app? It was brilliant. As is the Reeder app.

      • Leonardo Gomes

Why not put the tabs menu on the sidebar? May be something interesting.

    • Leonardo Gomes

Tabs on the side is something I would like to see in Opera. And maybe putting the tab menu in the sidebar may be a interesting approach.

  • Jarek

    CPU usage is much higher:
    Opera 45: ~20-25%
    Opera 44: ~1-3%

    I have Arch Linux.

  • Ariane Lu

Awesome, but chat area instance should share between different browser window

  • Javier Álvarez Martínez

When I read “Opera Reborn” my first thought was that they were about to recover al those useful features lost after switching to Chromium engine.

  • kik1n

    A new Opera Neon please.

  • Alexe M

Does new opera sync passwords between desktop and android?

    • Leonardo Gomes

Opera for Android doesn’t sync passwords.

      • Alexe M

Thank you. This is the only reason I don’t use Opera.

  • Ariane Lu

If there only one private window opened, link should not open with normal window, reported as: DNAWIZ-14932

    • Leonardo Gomes

I think it was reported before. At least I remember it being discussed around.

      • Ariane Lu

I remember it work like my description in last month

  • Francisco Espinoza

    Finally guys..congrats

  • Jamie

On the menu, the O is cut off at the top when you click it.

All the icons are fuzzy/blurry on my 3200×1800 Windows 10 laptop at 200% scaling. Especially the address bar icons and the minimize/maximize/close buttons.

The speed dial favicon is TINY (other sites seem smaller too). The favicon for private windows is also extremely blurry.

I am SO happy that the new sidebar was turned off by default when I upgraded. However, Please allow us to fully remove the Facebook/Whatsapp/Telegram links, instead of just being able to uncheck them.

Tabs in the background look a little weird, almost like they are being lit from a spotlight underneath. Could we just make background tabs a solid color that is darker than the selected tab? That would look cleaner, less busy, and more in line with the Windows 10 UI.

I can also confirm that the new version is using a LOT more RAM than before, as other users have experienced.

It feels like there was very little QC-ing done on this verson. =

    • Cryio

It’s a major disappointment for most users and a total disaster for HiDPi users :(. They really tried to refresh the UI, but 3 months wasn’t enough for the amount of work needed apparently.

      • BK

we will deliver the hi dpi fix, even if that would be only for you, but please – we’ve got the message by now 😉

        • Cryio

Ahahaha, I’m sorry. I guess I’ve got a bit obnoxious. Love you guys.

        • Nachiketa Ramesh

Its not just HiDPI thats the problem, 100% on windows has blurry elements, my post below has links to pictures that show this.

      • BK

what dpi level do you use, btw?

        • Cryio

          200% at 2736×1824

  • FBI director Comey fired by Trump, a cumulative Winows 10 update and now a reborn Opera, all on the same day. This is too much I can handle… So I’ll check if enabling hardware acceleration on my “critical” PCs still disables browser buttons tomorrow.

    • BK

keep calm and carry on? 😉

      • Well, one thing I can already say I dislike: the new turquoise color for my bookmark folders in the bookmark bar. And my usual translator add-on does not work as expected, i.e. highlighting a word does not automatically offer me a translation.

        • BK

          thx for update.
Which extension exactly is that? any particular page it does not work, or any?

Normally I can highlight a word, then a light-brown icon pops up (which is sometimes hidden by the internal Opera search/copy popup) which after clicking on it offers me a direct translation and explanation in a new window.

Just checked other sites than this Disqus forum, and there it still works, strange.

Where has the download button gone, by the way? That was one of my non-working buttons on my other PCs. Probably it has been fired, but this is like firing Comey for his bad handling of Hilary’s email leaks last year when the true reason is of course the investigation of Trump’s ties to Russia. 😉

OK, it is getting weirder with every stable update: on this PC I cannot see the download button anymore. On my Dell Latitude laptop I can see it, but it still is not clickable with hardware acceleration, neither is the VPN button. Disabling hardware acceleration enables these buttons again on my laptop, but does not bring back the missing download button on this PC. Both have the same Windows 10 version with the latest updates, by the way, except that the PC is 64bit, and the laptop 32bit.

          • Vux777

extension popop probably doesn’t work here because Disqus is in ifame.
Are you sure it was working before (on Disqus comments)?
If so, contact extension developer to investigate it.

Another thing that could affect extension popop (in general) is flag
            opera://flags/#horizontal-link-selection
            and copy/search popup
try disabling them (popup in settings, if you didn’t disabled it already) and see if there are problems

          • No, I’m not sure if I used the translation add-on on this forum before, so iFrame might be the explanation. Disabling both the flag horizontal link selection and copy/search popup in the settings does not bring back the translator popup here, but still works on other sites. Hardware acceleration is also still disabled on this PC.

    • Regnas

So, enabling hardware acceleration is ok now? I’m also just waiting for this fix…

  • No Thanks

Been using Opera for many years. Over a decade! Even stuck around on v12 until the “new” browser was released on Linux.

These forced applications are CRAP. Make them optional or add them as extensions. It’s really a sad day. I will be moving on from Opera. Ugh.

I actually had to make an account with this comment system just to express my distaste for the new Opera and the forcing of these applications in my browser.

I WANT TO BROWSE THE INTERNET. NO THANKS!

    • ratamies

Man, take it easy. These messengers are turned off in settings. For example, right click on the side bar and select what you want.

      • Blapidoup

It doesn’t change the fact that they should add them as extensions, this way we can have a totally clean browser. I really hope they come to their minds and update it this way instead of having builting specific services.

        • ratamies

What is “totally clean browser”? This peace of code is not launched, therefore it doesn’t consume memory or CPU. For example I don’t use Flash, but I don’t ask developers to make it as an extension, it is simply turned off in settings.

    • Frederik

I don’t think they even are applications. They just load the html web clients for each service. Sort of enhanced bookmarks I guess. And you can easily unchecked them.

  • MarkG54321

Liking it so far. Use none of the bundled messengers, don’t use whatsapp or facebook or telegram. Would like to see Google Hangouts in there though, that’s about the only messenger I really only use.

  • Regnas

    Good job, Opera…

  • MacielLucas

    youtube got small 🙁

    • Regnas

Yeah, it’s like that since the new sidebar was introduced on the dev versions…

  • cristianer

    Amazing. Updating right now.

  • Valentina Lucchese

A terrible-looking black bookmark bar passed off as a kind of revolution.
    Does this really explain “Reborn”?
This sounds rather ridiculous to me.

  • Alexs

Not good job for Linux user without compositing (DNAWIZ-13537).
    Opera is dead…

  • Andis Spriņķis

Every icon on the navigation bar, including extension icons is located 1 px too high.

Of course it’s been mentioned, but I must still express that VPN icon is terrible.

  • BoFiS

Would be awesome if you built in support for more messaging services such as Hangouts or even AIM!

  • Nico

Great release, but I’ve found a small error in the German translation:

The hint for opening the sidebar reads:

“Kein Problem, öffnen sie ihn hier, wann immer Sie möchten.”

This is wrong, instead it should be:

“Kein Problem, öffnen Sie sie hier, wann immer Sie möchten.”

“Seitenleiste” (German translation for Sidebar) is a female word. Also, the first “Sie” needs to be capitalized.

    http://imgur.com/a/8wezP

    • Jörg Arnold

Verbesserungsvorschlag: ”Kein Problem, öffnen Sie diese hier, wann immer Sie möchten.”

    • BK

      Thanks, we will follow up.

  • Thomas Sawyer

    Video looks choppy at http://g1.globo.com/politica/noticia/ministro-do-stj-nega-um-dos-recursos-da-defesa-de-lula.ghtml
My machine should be fast enough to handle it, and it works fine in Chrome.

    Opera 45.0.2552.635 (32-bit)
    Windows 10 (64-bit)

    • Mike Clark

Getting choppy video as well, but on YouTube (which is all I’ve tried at this point). Oddly, if I hover my mouse pointer on the tab that is playing the video, it is no longer choppy. Move it off and it happens again. I can duplicate it every time. Never did that until I upgraded to 45.0.2552.635 this morning. Running Windows 7 Pro 32-bit. **EDIT** – I just tested on your link and can duplicate the stuttering on/off with it as well. Move the pointer onto the tab and the stuttering goes away. Move it off and it’s choppy.

  • Shion

    What’s good:
    – new looks of speed dial and internal pages. Feels lighter, compact, sharp. Very nice.
    – new ADblock settings and subscriptions. Now just add custom element/domain blocking and it would be as good as uBlock.
    – dark theme.

    What’s bad:
    – dark theme doesn’t make settings and other internal pages dark.
    – more animations, that cannot be turned off.
    – sidebar with messengers that does nothing if “unpinned”.
    – sidebar takes some width from screen for no reason. Where is autohide? It’s bad. For work purposes I can’t have any screen space wasted, thus can’t use this new sidebar.
    – no notifications for incoming messages. Sound and red dot just ain’t enough.

I hoped to replace uBlock and Telegram client with this update. Seems a bit early for that.

  • Herr Pietrus

Icons on the new sidebar are OK when it’s pinned, but they’re TOO SMALL if the sidebar is unpinned.

I’ve got strange black square instead of the favicon on the internal pages.
Am I right that an option to change the SD thumbnails number manually was announced? is it in developer build or has it been included in the O45?
Icons on the toolbar seem to be even smaller… or perhaps that’s only ani impression because the tabs are bigger…

  • Stefan Gries

Threema Integration would be great! Threema Web works exacly as WhatsApp Web! https://web.threema.ch/

  • icetom

Update added two speeddial entrys (freundevonfreunden, bonavendi) again, you keep adding advertisement, about 2 years ago you told me thats “a bug”.

  • Cobalt

Dear Opera developers, please pay attention to the following bug reports for Chromium / Chrome, which affect your browser too (these bugs have not been fixed for years!):
https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=692412 – Do, finally, the default behavior for Windows context menus!!!
https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=692370 – Improved usability of the vertical scrollbar in Windows
https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=698285 – Chrome ignores the number of lines, that are set in the Windows settings for the drop-down lists on websites
https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=695788 – Remembers image zoom is not the desired behavior in case of images
https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=694073 – Image zoom under the mouse cursor like in image viewers & IE
https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=699161 – There is no visual confirmation of the work of Ctrl+A for images that are opened in a new tab

Google is not in a hurry to fix them =( We can wait for fixes these bugs from them for years!!! Therefore, it would be great if these bugs were fixed by your developers as soon as possible. This will benefit not only the Opera and Chrome users, but all the others who use the web browser based on Chromium.

  • ratamies

    1) Where is old default background “Where the air is clear” from Opera 44? It doesn’t present in the list of available backgrounds and I had to manually copy theme from the previous version. It is good idea to preserve old default backgrounds – people may got accustomed to them!
    2) VPN icon is ugly (too small and looks pixelized)

    • Shion

I like this new tiny VPN icon more.

  • icetom

Why do i have to give the messengers permissions for microphone and camera? i dont remember having to for whatsapp web.

also whatsapp web is fullscreen and your implementation is a small horrible weird slim window on the left side. i like whatsapp web more, since its basically the same but a bigger window.

  • jølle jøllesen

    No Signal?
    Not interested, no thank you.
    https://whispersystems.org/

    • Gresthol

      is it better than telegram?

  • fliker

I like performance, security and adblocking changes, but old look was much better than new. Everything is too bright and folders on bookmark bar have horrible colour. What’s more the Menu button is almost not divided from cards. In opposition bookmarks without their icon are too dark. If you can make an option to create user defined colour profiles it would be great.

As someone mentioned I look forward to built-in Hangouts in Opera

    • Cobalt

Everything is too bright and folders on bookmark bar have horrible colour.

      I agree!

  • Mike

I really like the new Opera 45 messenger integration. It is always a pain to type a message with this small and fiddling touch screen keyboards of a mobile phone. Would be much easier writing messages using a mature desktop keyboard, most notably when composing longer ones.
However, I just wonder why the heck Opera’s WhatsApp app needs microphone and camera access if I don’t want to send voice/video messages at all? It would be great if users could use it even with these permissions denied.

  • ali

    Opera 45, Adblocking not working!

    • Kornelia

It’s a bit of general statement. Any examples please?

      • I’m actually experiencing this issue as well. On pages the in-browser adblocker used to block it is now telling me that there aren’t any ads its blocking, but I still see ads everywhere.

  • André Cesário

Will this messenger integration be available on Neon as well?

  • Grzegorz Okaz

I got a small idea for future. Is it possible to pin new side bar also in full screen mode? Maybe you should think about it. On smaller screen it will be great, I think.

    And reading mode, please! 😉

  • Alexander Addams

Via Linux Mint, not sure if it’s the theme I’m using or what Opera is doing but both light and dark theme give me a near impossible to read drop down menus.
My theme is dark and all drop downs are dark except in opera.

    https://goo.gl/photos/fDKuVKyMv5bAwfHi6

  • Vux777

I would like this new sidebar more if it had actual tools on it (enabled/disabled like any other shortcut on it currently)
like zoom controls, find in page… + ability to hold extensions

as it is now, it looks like it was made for those messengers,
other stuff (shortcuts to internal pages) were there just to fill the empty space

  • Harakiri Tabasco

Great job with the new UI. Just a quick question. In about:gpu I see that rasterization is not accelerated by default in Opera, whereas in Chrome it is. Is this intentional?

    • L33t4opera

Hi, enable the opera:flags#enable-gpu-rasterization, relaunch the Opera, and see if this works in your case.

      • Harakiri Tabasco

It works, I’ve already tested it. I was just wondering why the default behavior differs from Chrome.

  • firuz_u7

    Thanks for Opera 45
AdBlocker needs the ability to block the ad element on the page manually, and there will not be need for other blockers
    example: http://jpegshare.net/38/17/3817038a4e21da20dd594ca12f940268.png.html

  • Steven D.

I’m having issues with choppy video since the update. It only happens in full screen. I’m running Windows 10 64bit. I have a laptop with an I7-7560U CPU, 16gb of ram, and Intel Iris 640 graphics. The same videos run smooth in Edge fullscreen.

    • Leonardo Gomes

Does it happen on any video? Here I don’t see such issue on a I5-4590 and a HD Graphics 4600.

      • Steven D.

I need to investigate more. It seems like news feed videos (or similar) within Facebook have the most issues on Opera, but they work fine on Edge. Again, it’s only in fullscreen. I’ve tried Youtube and some other misc videos in full and they seemed to work ok, but it replicates each time within Facebook.

        • Leonardo Gomes

What I have been noticing in some Facebook videos is that video and audio seem to not be synced.
However it doesn’t have if I change the user agent to Chrome’s one, so maybe it’s FB sending some wrong info to Opera.

Other than that, the videos seem to run fine here.

  • Denek Newton

Opera 45 (Reborn) is really amazing, but Opera Neon, I think, still is better.

  • Denek Newton

Maybe Opera Neon could becomes an independent browser.

  • Shion

Hmm, you still can’t change extension icons order with drag’n’drop. Years…

    • Herr Pietrus

      I’d say: eons…

  • Diach beiGuggel

    Function and Performance as allways very well- so thanks for the improvements (but for me no needs for reborning//other topic);
i really like the Opera and its functions, and for a long time everything was good, but…
1st. this horrific color-sheme on folders (well … if you think you need to know- ok)
2nd. the context menus and bookmarks in the bookmarksstrip appear with slightly gray letters on white background. For me unfortunately unreadable (even in the non-stringent/consistent “dark theme”. Can I adjust or change this? It is about the linux variant together with Ubuntu 16.04.2. So sad… I would appreciate it if you could make it usable again. thanks in advance…

    • Diach beiGuggel

Thank you for re-establishing usability in update 45.0.2552.881

  • xdvl

Nice Google Chrome skin, bring Opera 12 back.

    • Cryio

At this point, besides tab stacking and the weird UI redesign from v45, what do you miss from Opera 12?

      • Blapidoup

MDI, minimising tabs, window without tabs, stacking tabs, performances, total and easy customisation of UI, keyboard navigation, different zoom levels per tabs, spellchecker without bugs, no builtin Facebook/Whatsapp/etc. without ability to remove them, better omnisearch, sessions, tons of ergonomic functionalities, better “search in page”, better implemented notes, IRC…..

    • Grochu

Stop whining. New Opera is better now than it ever was. Or maybe you are still crying for email client?

  • Multidimensional

I have problems with scrolling text, the lines are not equal….

  • Whats_Sapph

Until now the new Opera seems very nice, but everytime I run the launcher, it auto-pins Opera to my taskbar, no matter if I continuously unpin it. I would really appreciate an option to permantly unpin Opera from taskbar. Thank you 🙂 (OS: Windows 8.1, x64)

    • Leonardo Gomes

      Known issue.

    • BK

sorry, should be fixed with next update.

    • Przemek Kudła

Will be fixed with the next update 🙂

  • rek

Tbh I don’t like the new look and feel of the reborn skin, doesn’t feel very modern.

  • Joe438

I enjoyed the promo video and as well as hearing from Joanna, the product manager at Opera.

I particularly enjoy the two new themes as opposed to the default native skin from before. The dark theme is easier on the eyes and is more along the lines of my Zune theme for Windows 7.

The first place that I notice the new GPU utilization is with the Speed Dial where zooming in and out reorders the Speed Dial tabs more smoothly.

I see that the Speed Dials have more rounded corners. I am not a big fan of rounded corners, but I believe in this case it works.

Pinning the Sidebar is nice. I see that this can make for a second sidebar.

No complaints. This is a really great release with many significant improvements.

Did the dragging and dropping of tabs recently change or did I simply not notice that dragging tabs drags a thumbnail of the tab as well?

  • Love the update. How can we create more sidebar apps? I’d love to see Trello or Hangouts or any site really.

    • Leonardo Gomes

We can’t. And there aren’t any apps there.

      • Nekomajin43

Have I just heard general web panels?

        • Leonardo Gomes

          Would be interesting to have.

          • Nekomajin43

I guess it’s not top priority, because people asked for it. 😀

          • Vivaldi does this really well.

          • Leonardo Gomes

Well, Vivaldi is a web page. 🙂

          • Leonardo Gomes

Probably they want to see how people react to the sidebar, their feedback and so on before thinking about implement something like this.

And we can’t forget that they have some background on web panels because of Opera Presto so maybe they know if it’s worth to implement such feature at this moment.

          • Nekomajin43

I can tell you right now. A few percent of the user base will use it lik any other feature.

  • Harry

So far, so good. Thank you.
    Two questions, if I may.

1- is it possible, as a senior with less than perfect eyesight, to increase the thickness or change the colors of the Back / Forward buttons? I find it very difficult to distinguish between the black and gray colors.

2- I’m using the built in ad-blocker plus uBlock Origin. Is this a bad idea?

    • Nekomajin43

+1 for a bit thicker icons

    • Przemek Kudła

      1. Try to change the size of text, apps in your system. It will affect Opera UI as well.
      2. It’s OK.

      • Harry

Thank you for replying. I’d rather not change any system specs just to possibly change the appearance of a few buttons that should have been better defined in the first place.

  • Opera adblocker breaks http://www.speedtest.net/ as with default ad blockers it blocks the main flash player of the speed test

    macOS 10.12.4

  • Maarten

    See my latest post.

    • Leonardo Gomes

Why do you think they are ugly? For me they seem OK.

      • Maarten

Why? Because the icons now look afwull: not smooth and pixelated. Opera updated aumatically from version 44 to 45 and restarted and I was shocked when I saw the icons have really become pixelated and not smooth.

Another example the icon for settings tab (gear wheel) has become very very small, just a tiny little icon that’s only using about a fourth of the icon space and aligned to top left.

        • Leonardo Gomes

Well, they look fine to me.

          • Nachiketa Ramesh

They are blurry compared to v44. I have posted pics below. And on HiDPI devices, their sizing is wrong, its a known issue, one of the mods replied below to some other post.

          • Leonardo Gomes

OK, but they still fine to me. You know, not everyone cares about such things.

          • Nachiketa Ramesh

Thats not the point. Its not ok for UI elements to be blurry. Just because they look OK to you doesnt mean its ok for them to be blurry. Opera doesnt just cater to YOU. And thats piss poor standards of software UX, especially since every other browser on the market AND Opera 44 doesnt have this problem.

          • Stahlreck

Maybe you don’t care, but others do. Looks not nice, it’s a error and needs to be fixed. Don’t understand the discussion about this.

          • Leonardo Gomes

And I don’t understand some people acting like if it was the end of the world.
Just pointing what they think is wrong should be enough.

          • Stahlreck

Well they did. They said the icons look awful now because they don’t scale correctly. You started to justify broken icons for no reason o_O

          • Leonardo Gomes

Some people did It but others just started ranting and whining about It.

    • Leonardo Gomes

Someone has asked about downgrade before, just take a look at the comments.

  • Victarion Date

this is just brilliant!! I really like this new sidebar, keep up the good work!!

UI is crappy. Icons are not rendered well (Win10): pixelated (not smooth) or shrunken (very very tiny). Looks awfull. Sorry to say. Previous post has been removed. Censorship?

Example (full-size partial screenshot, faulted icons in orange circles):

    • Leonardo Gomes

The favicons look strange indeed but the rest seems OK.

Anyway I don’t see it as a reasonable reason to all this rant about the UI.

And your previous post seems to still be there but with a different text now.

    • BK

Sorry for this issue, this will be fixed in the very next update.

    • Przemek Kudła

The next update will fix it.

      • redfox

And the color of the bookmarks bar’s folder icons too?

      • Maarten

Ok thanks, but ugly black side bar, loss of integration with windos theme colours all other design choices are a change for the worse. So fixing the icon issue is needed but the all the UI changes prevents me for upgrading to Opera 45. It’s just ugly, I am sorry. Opera 44 design is slick, neat and integrates very well with the OS. The new 45 version has abandoned the nice styling and put an ugly and inconsistent style in place. I am sorry.

  • Ctrl-Opt-Del

I’m slightly confused by the working of the article; is this an update to the main browser, or another forked channel like “Neon”?

    • Leonardo Gomes

It’s an update to regular Opera.

  • Tj Gienger

Just moving the menu button in line with the tabs and removing window head space was enough to get me using it again. I might use the chat features if the introduce Slack and Discord. Looks and feels much better than before. Good job so far, keep it up.

    • Oleg Maksimovich

I need Slack chat as well.

thx for pointing out. Yes, we need to clean up. Work is ongoing on this.

      • RX-3200

so why did you call 45 “Stable” with all it bugs ?

for example: Tampermonkey can’t install scripts in 45
        (45 trying to download them)

PS: please turn back old “downloads button”… it’s new design is ugly, and time interval between click on url and download popup is too big

  • SPH88

Update is great apart from one thing: Netflix doesn’t work for me anymore. Every time I try to play something I get this error page: http://i.imgur.com/owr34J9.png. Netflix worked flawlessly through version 44 for me as recently as yesterday afternoon. Any way to fix this? I’m bummed.

  • ronlm

The update broke the google hangouts extension from the chrome webstore 🙁 As I use this for texts and calls (gvoice number) this is a deal breaker.

I cannot connect to VPN in new Opera. When I switch VPN on, it keeps trying to connect and when I check the connection status, Opera says me VPN is currently unavailable. There is also no country list in VPN to choose.

    • ratamies

Well, either your firewall blocks connection or your country ISP blocks VPN for some reason.

How to remove the opera icon from system tray?

    • Ariane Lu

I didn’t see any Opera icon in my system tray (I’m on Windows)

      • YasserKhalil

After installing the new version (Opera_45.0.2552.635_Setup) I unpinned opera from task bar .. Open opera again I found it pinned …
I unpinned again but when opening the opera it is pinned to task bar each time

          Known issue, already commented here.

But I don’t know how to solve it. Can you guide me please?

          • Leonardo Gomes

You need to wait for a release with a fix.

          • YasserKhalil

            Thanks for reply. Best Regards

Opera doesn’t add itself to the system tray.

  • dannwebb

I had to stop using Opera as my secondary browser when it started using system settings for internet connection instead of having its own settings. I need to be able to switch between two proxy servers at work, and the quickest way is to just run two different browsers side by side. It used to be Firefox (my primary) + Opera. Now I’m stuck wit Firefox + PaleMoon :

  • R123

Dear Opera developers: Can you add support for Netflix video at 1080p resolution (or higher)? This could increase Opera share in browser market.

    https://help.netflix.com/en/node/23742
Chrome, Opera and Firefox support playback of Netflix movies in 720p resolution in Win7, Win8.1 & Win10. IE11 in Win7 support only 720p (it uses Silverlight 5).
IE plays Netflix movies at resolution 1080p in Win8.1 and Win10. Edge in resolution 1080p or 4K in Win10.

Adding 1080p or 4K in Opera would especially important for Win7 users (all browsers play Netflix video at 720p in Win7; there is no Netflix app for WIn7)
Win7 is on 48% PCs and will be major Windows system for 5-10 years.

    • Stahlreck

      >Win7 is on 48% PCs and will be major Windows system for 5-10 years.

It won’t. In 3 years it’s done. If you hope MS will increase support for it like XP, you’re a dreamer. They want to get rid of W7. Userbase will decrease drastically in 2020, just like the XP one did when it was out of support.

If you want 4K netflix on PC, update to a modern OS. Or just buy a 4k capable chromecast or similar.

      • R123

I do not think that you are right. It is just to many computers with Win7 now.
Plus, computers with Win7 are stronger than those with WinXP, and thus they may last longer.

        • Stahlreck

It’s not about being right or wrong. Windows 7 support runs out in 3 years. Microsoft won’t extend it.
Without security updates, W7 will die as quickly as XP did. It’s not secure to run an unsupported OS. Doesn’t even matter if PCs last longer, every W7 PC can upgrade to 10 and it was free for a year. Those who didn’t run out of luck. Either buy W10 or be stuck on a OS that won’t be supported anymore.

Also don’t upvote your own comments. That really doesn’t look good.

          • R123

Just to have better understanding. By major I mean share >10%.

      • Leonardo Gomes

I don’t think that all Win7 users will automatically switch to Win10 or any other OS just because Microsoft will end its support to their OS. There are people still using XP and Vista right now.

And three years may be a long time so maybe it’s still to soon to think about doing things for Windows 7.

        • Stahlreck

Sure it will still be used, but it’s userbase will drastically shrink as it did with XP. Today it’s not worth considering support for XP (and even Vista).

          • R123

Computers with WinXP maybe now too weak, but we need to remember that stronger multicore processors i7, i5, i3 appeared during time when Win7 was the newest Win system. Nowadays processors are not much faster (less then 2x) that those in Win7 computers, so this may slow down Win7 disappearance. My computer is able to support 4K monitor and it is enough for me.
I am not planning to trash Win7, because the end of support. I hate Win10 oversimplified look. In my Win7, I even miss Windows Explorer functionality from WinXP. I will definitively use my computer even 10 years or until it will die or Firefox/Chrome/Opera/Vivaldi will stop supporting browsers for Win7. In the meantime, I will use the best antivirus solutions to minimize the risk related to the lack of Win7 support.

          • Stahlreck

That’s a naive view of things but it’s your problem. A non-supported Windows Version is (as the name suggests) not supported anymore. Most people and especially companys will ditch it and it’s userbase shrink to a minimum.
I suggest for you Linux. No antivirus can secure a not supported Windows version. In fact, even many AV don’t support XP anymore and the same will probably happen to 7 some time after it’s end of life. But that’s your concern. Using an outdated OS solely because of looks is silly to me, but whatever.

          • R123

Your wishful thinking. Some mainstream antivirus programs still support WinXP with their newest versions. AV makers earn money that way…

          • Stahlreck

Yes “some” still support XP. Some others don’t like many software developers who don’t support XP anymore or won’t in the near future.

And it’s not wishful thinking. XPs market share shrunk incredibly fast for what it was after MS made clear that they won’t extend the support.

But whatever, do what you want. Opera and all the others surely won’t add FullHD or 4K. Besides, it seems to be hard to do that anyway. (because why else wouldn’t they have done that a while ago?). But surely they won’t do it because “W7 will be the major OS for 5 to 10 years”. It won’t. It will for 3-4 years.

          • R123

I cannot say about all AV because I am using just one. 8% PC with XP mean millions of users and many more dollars.
But the end of system support by AV is for me the end of use of particular system.
I may have computer with XP, but not using it anymore because it is too slow. Not because is the end of support.

Also see how many Apple and Android devices are not supported anymore. All because “Planned obsolescence”. I am environmentalist and this is really bothering me. This way I prefer to buy stronger PC unit, and be able to use for longer time.

    • Leonardo Gomes

But it’s a browser limitation or it’s a Netflix limitation?

      • R123

Since Netflix approved only 720p in Chrome and in Opera then this might be limitation of DRM placed in the browser. Chrome and Opera are using DRM called Widevine. Widevine was found not to be the safest:
        https://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/06/28/google_widevine_drm/

Thus, there is a need for browser developers and Netflix to work together to solve this issue affecting many users. Opera developers may also choose other DRM mechanism to implement into Opera browser.

  • shadow118

Been using Opera Developer as my main browser ever since the dark theme was introduced, now I can finally swithch back to Stable 🙂

  • Grochu

I’m loving the Opera since more than a year. And I’m enjoying it’s Reborn incarnation.

The only problem I’ve noticed- after an update, randomly when I minimize/maximize the browser, the ads are launching in a new window. I’ve scanned system by ADWCleaner, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and nothing. Doesn’t have a clue what’s the issue. Maybe one of built-in communicators (I’m using Mesenger and WhatsApp) is connecting to it’s own ads-servers and causing this?

    • BK

Ads stuff is something external to O45, at least the one we deliver.

How did you install Opera, from our website?
It might be that you have installed some new software along the way, or auto update to some other software infected your PC with some malware.

      • Kornelia

And also try disabling all extensions.

  • Walkie Talkie

I have big black borders in Opera’s menu and context menu when clicking right mouse button on my Debian Jessie 64-bit. The DE is Xfce.

Also the icon in left panel begin to slide in right on hover

  • Maximilian Draco

Is it possible to change the Start Page tiles to be square, like the previous versions, instead of rounded corners?

    • Walkie Talkie

      Only with css.

      • Maximilian Draco

        D’OH!!
I don’t know the first thing about coding, or what files do I even have to edit.

        • Walkie Talkie

          leave it. it’s rather difficult.

    • Leonardo Gomes

      I don’t think it is.

  • How do I check for updates on opera for mac? I cant find it … or is this a windows only update?

    • On windows you go to the about page, have you tried that?

      • Well, I did it using the installer now (which apparently is also capable of updating an existing install). But now that you mention it, yes the version number can be seen on the about page (which I overlooked). Right now it says up to date (since I just updated it). I cannot find a “check for updates”-option, though … maybe I am just blind …

Anyway I got it updated … thanks for your help, though 🙂

        • It checks for updates when you open the page. You should see a “Checking for updates” next to the version number.

          • ah yes, you are right. Thanks again 🙂

  • Ilian Todorov

So I have problem with the latest update. When I install on my home laptop gives me a SSL error I tried everything to fix it including disabling TSL 1.1 and 1.2 etc. The only solution I found is uninstallig Opera and wiping all user information an installing an older version.

    • BK

Hi, whas OS do you use? Do you have some custom network configuration, firewalls, antivir?

      • Ilian Todorov

        Hello,
I use Windows 8.1, only Windows defender and Malwarebites. Only thing custom is that the OS have mod for the interface to look like Windows 7, but I doubt it have influence on internet certificates. On my work laptop I installed the new version and works great, it uses Windows 10.

  • Marek Kreul

Any chance for a portable version of Opera?

  • Is there way to get WhatsApp integration working without granting camera and audio access?

    • Ariane Lu

The best way is plug-out or disable camera and microphone 😉 Not a good idea if you don’t think somebody want watch you.

  • Yet another question: will custom search engines get synced using Opera Sync now? Or is there any place one could suggest such a feature, if it has not yet been implemented? In general: Where does one submit feedback?

Is there something like a uservoice page? I think everything should have a uservoice page 😀

    • Kornelia

You can report you bugs/ suggestions here: https://bugs.opera.com/wizard/

      • but this seems to be for bugs only. Is there some kind of form where I can submit actual feedback? Feedback as in new ideas, alternative ways of doing something and the likes.

        • Leonardo Gomes

You can do it by commenting in this blog.

    • Leonardo Gomes

I think this is the best place to submit Feedback.

  • Deyan Aleksandrov

    Hi Opera team,

I’d like to report an issue with O45 on macOS 10.12.4 – facebook page freezes. I am using the FB messenger in the sidebar, if that makes any difference. While the facebook tab is frozen (no scrolling or clicking is possible) all other tabs remain fully functional.

    • Kornelia

Hi Deyan, is adblock on while freeze happen? Only Facebook site is affected by this?

      • Deyan Aleksandrov

        Hi Kornelia,

so far Facebook is the only on which I experience the problem. Yes, adblock is on, but I have just turned it off (in general, not only for this particular site) and the result is the same – it keeps freezing.

  • ugcheleuce

“One that you will surely fall in love with is the new colors.”
How about the ability to choose one colour when the browser is the active window (some might choose blue), and another colour when it is not (some might choose grey).

  • Codrut Nistor

Seriously, “the first browser to allow messengers to reside within your browser, without the need to install any extensions or apps”??? Come on guys, I love Opera, but this is A HUGE LIE!!! Remember Flock and Rockmelt???

    • Ariane Lu

It’s just a web page, for people who need it, if you don’t like it, just unpin it

      • Codrut Nistor

Are you sure your answer was aimed at me??? It makes no sense what you say…

    • Rafael Luik

Even in Opera Presto one could simply add a web panel with the chatting service URL and it’d work practically the same. xD

  • Maarten

Found another bug. Whatsapp does not Keep me signed in (although checked). Means everytime I start-up Opera I have to rescan the QR code. This version seems too buggy and maybe is released too soon.

Would like to downgrade to Opera 44, that version rocks!! But how, can somebody tell me how to install version 44 again. I cannot manage…

    • Cypher Soc

      1- download: http://download1.operacdn.com/pub/opera/desktop/44.0.2510.1457/win/Opera_44.0.2510.1457_Setup.exe
2- go to opera folder delete 45.xxxxx folder
3- instal the file don’t open opera
4- go to opera folder then folder 44.xxxx delete autoupdate.exe (or move it some were else if you want to update later )
5- you have done it run opera 44

      • Maarten

        Thanks. I really appreciate.

Bit disappointed in Opera. They push a buggy, redesigned (and in my honest and humble opinion very ugly new UI, sorry) without prior warning and no option do decline this new horrible looking version. Causes me lot of trouble to revert back.

I use Opera since 2004 (I paid for it back then because Opera was so great!) but now Opera’s strategies have changed for the worse. I regret.

Will install Opera 44 and seriously rethink if I will keep on board.

        • Cypher Soc

          are you listening Krystian Kolondra?

        • redfox

The former Opera’s plans was to try the Reborn UI only on DEV and possibly Beta channels for testing purposes only, but do not release it to the Stable. I also regret, that they have changed their opinion and forced people to use this imperfect UI experiment in the final product. I will stay with v44 as long as possible.

          • Leonardo Gomes

When they said that they wouldn’t release Reborn non stable channel? Like any feature, it starts on developer then goes to Beta and, unless something very serious prevent it, ends on stable channel.

So Reborn would get stable channel sooner or later.

          • Maarten

The new release is (1) too buggy and (2) looks very ugly and therefore in its current state should never be pushed as the new version.

          • Leonardo Gomes

Well, I don’t see any show-stopper among those issues people are talking about.

          • Leonardo Gomes

None of them is a show-stopper.

          • Maarten

Not for you, for me it definitely is. the new UI is utmost ugly and not elegant at all. Black side bar does not match in colour and look for example. However devs do present UI as most elegant… which is not.

          • Leonardo Gomes

Something being a show-stopper is not exactly a matter of opinion.

          • Maarten

Yes it is. And who are you to determine if it is a showstopper for me or not? Pretty arrogant.

          • Leonardo Gomes

I agree that the sidebar should follow the theme but It does not justify all the whining.

          • Maarten

Opera 44 looks AWESOME, really slick and neat, nicely fits in with Windows10, using Win10 theme colours for menu bar and tabs.

Opera 45 on the other hand looks AWFUL and very very amateurish, as Opera has gone years back in time. It does not fit in with OS themes. The new side bar looks really bad and can be hidden but only reappear using settings tab which is very user unfriendly.

Just simply cannot understand Opera devs do not see this.

          • Ariane Lu

Not all user like their OS theme, really ugly

      • Pavel Novotný

        Build 1457 is newer.

        • Cypher Soc

just changed it in the link

          • Maarten

Thanks again. I managed meanwhile to re-install latest O44 build. Happy now!

  • Multidimensional

I’m experiencing very choppy scrolling when i zoom @ 150%, which is hugely annoying. It looks as if the page were chopped up and only pieces of it were scrolling, with parts of the former content still displayed

  • Remos Turcuman

Ugh, guess it’s finally time for washed-out UI with no regard to visibility. And I thought I could skip on Windows 10.

  • Jim White

I’m damn impressed. This is free software (of a sort) so the amount of effort, polish & nerd-magic that went into it is astounding. It’s fast as fuck. It looks beautiful. It doesn’t get in the way. All huge achievements. Nice work all!

(ps – future option : disable tabs, my OS has this already and I use it to get through all my apps, having a separate silo of tabs with a different navigation scheme is helpful for some, prefer each tab was a window)

    • Maarten

I wish Opera was still paid software… Really. Back then they were really, really innovative. Would really like to pay for Opera if they continue the v44 look and feel.

      • Leonardo Gomes

Yep, for that time maybe. But, you know, time has passed and things have changed, people have changed, the world have changed.
Opera and other browsers had to change, to adapt themselves to those changes, to the new needings of people.

And even back on Opera Presto time, there used to be a lot of complaning about those innovations, changes and so on.

Opera has always been and still is very innovative but the innovations are now others.

        • Maarten

I liked Opera Presto and was also disappointed then, when they abandoned most unique features including the built-in e-mail client, which is still a great loss that it is not built-in and not developed anymore. The very poorly new UI in Opera is another set-back. Opera is not so unique anymore I am afraid…

  • Maarten

    Joke of the day/week/year:

“Opera now has a completely new user interface that is truly modern, simplified, refined and playful.

The entire layout has been updated with a new, high-quality graphical design that is more consistent across platforms. The tabs are simplified, lighter and more elegant, making it easier to locate open tabs. The new sidebar is more subtle and refined with a touch of animation.”

    • Une patate islandaise

      and why is that ?

      • Maarten

Because Opera 45 is verly poorly styled as opposed to 44.

    • AleksOD

There isn’t much new, tbh. They still have the same buttons, they just altered their look slightly. I do not see what’s new here.

  • Datch

Is there a 64-bit Opera for Windows?

I have a big problem with favorites drop down lists. the >> on the top right corner.
First time i hover on a folder with the mouse the folder opens showing me all the links inside, if i go back and then again on that folder, the folder does NOT open anymore.
The list in the folder seems to be there but it’s just invisible.
I have to close and reopen the entire favorites drop down list but then it starts all over again.
    Never had this problem before.

What’s the plan for additional messengers? Do they have to be added by Opera? Or are devs going to be able to add them via extensions? I would LOVE Google Hangouts in there.

Also, having this new side bar is awesome, but looks weird as hell when you open the extensions sidebar at the same time.

This works succesfully with Opera Stable 44.0.2510.1218, 44.0.2510.1449 and 45.0.2552.635 . The next step is to add widevine from the Google Chrome browser, by downloading Google Chrome for your platform and install libwidevinecdm.so and libwidevinecdmadapter.so into /opt/google/chrome/ . Next check at http://demo.castlabs.com/ if encrypted Video and Streaming content is correctly playing. With Opera Stable 44.0.2510.1218 and 44.0.2510.1449 this works like described. However the same method for adding widevine to Opera Stable 45.0.2552.635 fails to play encrypted Video and Streaming content, for now.

  • Herr Pietrus

does the new opera really consumes so much CPU power comparing to the previous build?
I haven’t checked CPU utilization before and to be honest I don’t want to install old version only to do that

  • Simn Go

Doesn’t work –force-wave-audio only for me?
Oh, sry. I found a new option (new for me) “Non-default channel layouts for audio output streams”
    5.1 sorround works is good

  • Herr Pietrus

has someone already mentioned that icons on the sidebar misalign after clicking them? They move right. Moving the cursor over them (triggering the animation) fixes their position.

  • krevok

I like the redesign so far, but please add Skype’s web app too to the sidebar! 🙂

  • Max Tony Bonkers

I really like opera again, too 🙂 i’ve used two other browser so far, but this version of opera is absolutly awesome and seems to be hell of fast.

could you add an icon for threema web, or can i do this somehow myself?

  • Jop

This broke HDPI support! Downgraded to 44, hope this gets fixed soon.

    • Cryio

Trust me, they know. They are hard at work, though we’ll probably see improvements only in v46 or v47.

      • I really believe that they are hard working in order to fix those issues as soon as possible on the next revisions.

  • avongenesis

Would love to see Signal Messenger added to the list of supported messengers.

  • juan david camargo pulido

please help!! Hardware acceleration causes the address bar, the download icon, and the preview of the tabs to not display. I have already installed several times and still operates that error.

    • Cryio

Usually, OS version, GPU and driver version helps 🙂

      • juan david camargo pulido

windows 10 version 1703, GPU mobile intel 4 series express chipset family, driver 8.15.10.2702. Does about 3 updates of opera worked, so far I noticed that deactivating the acceleration hadware again worked correctly

        • For low-power PC’s like netbooks, deactivate the hardware acceleration works.

  • haruspex

Not a fan of the installer for macOS. It’s somewhat bad form to use an installer on that system. It feels far more trustworthy to simply distribute the .app file and let us drag it to where we want to install.

  • alden

    yummmmmmmmmm

  • I prefer call this redesign “Coast”, like the exclusive browser for iOS.

  • Shion

After playing around with this new sidebar I once again found myself surprised at how lazy Opera devs are.

Technically, this new sidebar is just another Opera window. Similar to private window, it has it’s own separate cookies storage and keeps any loaded tab (messenger) open in the background.

But why “lazy”? Because, as I said, it’s just another Opera window that only looks different. And that is bad because:
    – once started, you have to “open” every messenger so it would start tracking new messages.
    – when “unpinned”, this window is closed with all “tabs” in it, so the tracking also stops.
    – it’s not private. all installed extensions are also applied to every “tab” of the “pinned” window. And there is no UI to control them (I actually got facebook “app” blocked by one of uBlock subscriptions).
    – the “messenger apps” are nothing but links to web-versions of those messengers (Try to resize telegram tab width for the lulz). You could pin a normal Opera tab and have the same effect without having screen space taken from you.

So instead of making official messenger extensions for already available extensions sidebar, that might work a bit smarter and do the same thing with no additional cost including the developing ones, they wasted time to make another sidebar with more stupid stuff, that managed to stay there through beta and developer streams. All that while download popup still takes away the focus from current tab and extension icons are still unmovable.

Opera priorities. But at least it looks cool, right?

    • Nekomajin43

They said the new sidebar is a foundation of future developments. I guess it will be much more than a vertical bookmarks bar.

However, it would be good to have parts of those sidebar tabs in memory even when they are closed to get notifications and run other periodic scripts.

    • Maarten

Agree, and besides the sidebar is ugly as hell. Opera is losing credits this way.

    • Roman Fröhlich

No, actually it is very ugly and inconsistent. Just private mode looks well, normal mode is a design joke.

  • Denis K.

Does totally not look like stable. As well as much stuff is slipshod in particular, so is the whole browser perception. Just offends the eye… Btw, pls make the “downgrade to the previous version” button. Guess it would be appreciated by many.

    • Caleb Budde

Go into your program files/ opera and find opera 44 folder with launcher

      • Denis K.

As good as simple. Thanks. No reason it escaped my mind, just bad memory or laziness I guess.

    • Maarten

Agree. It’s ridiculous this buggy (and utmost ugly) new version is pushed without warning and choice.

    • Roman Fröhlich

Yeah they ruined it, inconsistent ugly colored design, I hate this bluish gray, I hate the tiny panel and mostly the disgusting blue windows 7 styled facebook messenger icon 😀 Dark mode is too dark and normal mode is too light. I am looking for new browser with password sync, this is just nonsense not upgrade, but downgrade

  • plotnikva

Hellow. There is some problem with selfpining to the windows taskbar – if Opera is unpinned then, after closing the browser, it becomes self-pinned to the taskbar. Such behavior appeared only in this release – Opera 44 hasn`t this problem. Windows 7 x64.

    • Przemek Kudła

This is the known issue, the next update will fix it.

      • plotnikva

        Thank you for the reply!

  • UbuntuWillRule

On Ubuntu 16.04 everything is working perfectly. Very good job guys! Opera rocks. Better than Chrome. Really well organized! I LOVE it!

  • Briandito Priambodo

please add Slack integration! loving the new opera!

  • Berend

To bad Frisian is gone as a language.
I will recommend Vivaldi to users as that has Frisian in it.

  • British Dude Jon

Am I the only one experiencing screen flickering???

    • British Dude Jon

      I guess I am. I’m on Windows 7 x32 btw.

      • Kumplido

Same Issue over here. windows 7 x64. A lot of flickering and when I open Opera I get a transparent screen in the colors of my OS.

      • Vux777

it’s a glitch in the matrix
        they changed something again ๏̯͡๏

        …bloody agents

    • Maarten

The new version is way to buggy (and hence never should have been released in its current state). Proof that Quality Control and Quality Assurance within Opera team fails.

  • Ronny

I can no longer start Opera x64 / Win8.1 with “run as administrator” from a standard user account. The launcher starts under admin security token, but then drops back to start Opera under normal user credentials.

And also run in to the icon re-appears on taskbar after un-pin bug.

    • Kornelia

Second issues is a bug but it was already fixed and will be available with the next release update.
About installation – why do you want to run the browser elevated?

      • Ronny

I have a couple of reasons (different profile, different security settings etc), but may I turn the question around…

Why would you want to deviate from the ‘default’ Windows design that if you chose to run an application elevated that it does exactly that?
This is confusing, and I know of no other application that does it this way, so really curious as to why this design was chosen…

    • Przemek Kudła

      The first issue is expected.

    • Caleb Budde

Than get windows 10!(You should have when it was free!)

  • Strange issue on Linux, when I right click there boarder is really blacked out on the corners.

    • Kornelia

Can you send us a screenshot? Right click where?

      • I cannot send you a screenshot because when I prtsc the window closes. Right click anywhere the panel is dark on the corners.

      • L33t4opera

Hi Kornelia, @panagiotisegl:disqus, most probably it’s about the issue with thick (black) borders of windows, when you’re using a window manager with no composition, which is described here, and here.

  • Gillian Pidler

So far loving it as the messenger thing will be very useful for me with the way I work. I’d also love to have Skype integrated as a messenger at some point. I also think the wallpapers are great but would love the option to change up the grey top border to something else a bit fresher of my choosing. Great work Opera, love your browsers and have been using them for years with no real issues.

  • Alex Wazovskiy

Why I didn’t get notification about this post via RSS?

  • Wontollaz

    Hi.
Any options to add Line as messaging app?.
    Nice work BTW.

  • ASR

Is it likely that users will be able to add other messaging and non-messaging panels (and/or custom URLs) to the sidebar this way? I would love to have Hangouts and SPECIALLY (multiple) Gmail panels, and custom URLs as well (maybe Pocket, Feedly, a specific webpage, etc.)…

  • Pushkar Gogte

Videos on Amazon prime video do not load only loading circle is shown it does not move forward but videos get started on other browser like firefox and chrome. Please fix this.

    I live in India.

  • The new look was wonderful, and the performance of Opera is excellent. They should only tailor the WhatsApp and Messenger icons to the same standard as the others on the bar. Using Opera for a couple of years on Ubuntu 🙂

    • Maarten

Fully agree. Opera should integrate messengers in the Opera 44 UI. New design is simply NOT good.

  • Please let us change the search provider on Speed Dial. I would much rather use DuckDuckGo.

Other than that, this update is wonderful and Opera quickly became my default browser.

  • verter

What about DNA-53282? There’s other browser, called Vivaldi. It’s based on Blink like Opera and has side panel too. And it doesn’t have this annoying bug. So I will install it on all computers I configure and recommend it to my friends from now on.

  • Great work on redesign. The new look was incredible beautiful.

    • Maarten

I absolutely disagree! Redesign is change for the worse. For the moment I keep using Opera 44 but will eventually leave the ship (I use Opera as of 2004).

      • As a old user, i think that is hard for you, when things changes. I used Opera before (between 2012-2014). And now with the redesign with extensions and integration with others aplications, the browser grabbed my attention again.

So… What i wanna say is: You’re a old user [vs.] I look as someone who left the browser.

        • Maarten

          Dear Rodigro,

It is not hard at all for me when things change. I welcome change. But I value quality. Version 45 is subpar on UI and stability. It is not the changes that I dislike but the poor quality that does not live up to Opera’s standards. Simply put: it is not good. UI changes are ugly and performance is too buggy.

          • Herr Pietrus

I wouldn’t say ugly, but the title bar on Windows 8/10/OS X is a joke, fortunately Windows 7 have native theme support 😀
And yes, there are some bugs with icons on the sidebar, not very good colors… Reborn must be polished. I’m also waiting for Opera 46 🙂

          • Got it, thanks!

Thanks for Reborn and my Chrome was uninstalled.

  • Relerpra

The background color of tabs seems to change every time I restart: some of the colors are gross: I just want it how I want it but I can’t find how to configure it. Dark or light is not enough. What have I missed ?

Otherwise, it is a good update … (Linux Mint 18.1 32 bit)

  • So ugly

  • why is the opera sidebar different from the plugin side bar? it seems silly to have 2 sidebars sideby side when only 1 is needed. Does this mean you are no longer working on opera Neon? Neon is a dream what happened to developing it?

    • AleksOD

      Totally agree

  • Pls, enter Opera un Windows 10 Store

    • Leonardo Gomes

      Microsoft wouldn’t allow it.

      • Opera can use the desktop bridge

      • AleksOD

Why not? What is their objection?

        • Leonardo Gomes

It seems that you need to use Edge engine to be allowed in Windows Store.
There was a discussion on it here.

    • MarkG54321

LOL, Windows 10 store. Who even uses that?

      Agreed – absolutely this.

    • Dan Bohea

      This is a great idea.

  • will it allow me to independently use whatsapp on PC? r do i still have to perform than scan barcode thingy?

    • You still have to identify yourself with the barcode image showing in the browser on your smartphone in WhatsApp. But then you can uninstall their desktop web app in case you have installed it.

  • OstroLk

How about adding an option to get rid of the title caption bar permanently for Linux? And add a minimize button, once that’s implemented, Krystian?

In Windows 10, once the title bar is taken off, it stays that way, and it has all 3 minimize, maximize, close buttons.

Depends on your OS. the installer automatically detects your system and installs the best version for you.

    • Leonardo Gomes

      Both.

  • 314159265

    That’s awesome! Congrats!

  • MarioFlying

45 is a high-quality release bringing many much awaited features… Thank you, best browser ever. Happy to have sticked around now.

    • Maarten

      Are you serious?

      • MarioFlying

I am. 44 was giving me problems: bookmark thumbnails weren’t working and facebook and other javascript-intensive websites were slow. Both solved.

The dark interface theme is really nicely done, been waiting for it since I re-took Opera after the engine change; though I’d like mouse clicks on the upper side of the full-screen window to register to tabs, instead of having that upper 1-pixel void which sometimes causes me to close the window with a middle click.

Chat tabs are working and they make for a nice feature that works and that I’m actually using.

The interface is smoother overall. Opera behaves better on my machines than all the other major browsers.

Now I hope to be able to re-arrange the extensions icons in one of the coming versions.

        • Maarten

For me Opera 44 is awesome. Nice UI (slich, neat, integrates very well with Win10 UI theme), everythings workt well and fast, as opposed to ) 45 which is a nightmare (and ugly too).

          • MarioFlying

Well, to each his own… Let’s hope V46 will make us both happy then. Cheers!

      • Leonardo Gomes

Well, there will always be a 50% chance that someone will not share our opinions. 🙂

        • Maarten

No that is not correct. Depends on the population distribution. If Opera delivers quality chances are that far more than 50% will like it, if Opera makes bad quality release, probably much less than 50% will like it.

          • Leonardo Gomes

Well, Opera be delivering quality or not may also be a matter of opinion.

Anyway, when you have to options – to agree to the opinion or to not agree with it – you always start with 50% chance for each one.

  • Ramsey

Are you going to add “Reload tab” in the context menu of tabs? That’s a basic feature that is missing, along with re-ordering the extensions’ icons on the url bar. When will you allow us to middle click on pinned tabs to close them? Add it as a setting for advanced users.

Edit: Just tried portable again (tried it a few weeks ago). New design is really nice. It was nice before but this is also really nice. Not sure why most are against this.

  • Игорь Князев

Previous Opera Dev build wasn’t uninstalled correctly (stays in the installed programs list). Select and copy feature doesnt work or buggy.

  • Okay, all I wanted to do was inform security of a “possible problem”, not blog about it. But, since this is the only avenue we have, here it is.
On the Opera ‘speed dial’ page, in the SUGGESTIONS section, there is a Walmart tab/button/whatever for folks to click on, thinking they are going to the Walmart store front.
Because I work in cybersecurity, I don’t just click, I hover and look at URLs before I do any clicking. If you hover over that speed dial for Walmart, it will show as WALLMART.COM. Wallmart.com is not the normal, innocent store front.
So, if you want to click on that WaLLmart.com speed dial button, beware of where it takes you.

    • Leonardo Gomes

As far as I know, Speed Dial suggestions are based on history, so that page should have been visited or at least opened before. And most probably not just once.

    • Ed S.

When I hover on that link on the speed dial page, it is the same. But apparently wallmart.com is also owned by walmart since it redirects to the correct site.

How can I hide the title bar of my operating system (Linux Mint) in Opera? https://image.ibb.co/m28PFk/opera.png

    • Kornelia

This title bar is system specific and you cannot hide it.

      • Xsbmrvsc

It’s not system specific – some browsers (ie. Chromium, Vivaldi) override GTK2 theme (by undecorating window first – then custom minimize, maximize and close buttons are added “where they should normally be”).

That’s how plain, undecorated Opera’s window looks like ( http://i.imgur.com/Nv7c79J.jpg ). Undecorate window, add 3 buttons left to the tab menu and it will look good.

        • LYCKAN

How did you remove the window decoration in cinnamon?

      • LYCKAN

I was able to remove the decoration from the window, but it gives stability problems in the application. Could the OPERA team try to solve this problem in Linux at the level of Google Chrome or Vivaldi? https://image.ibb.co/kt4A6Q/Captura_de_pantalla_de_2017_05_15_17_07_20.png

      • webaschtl

In versions below the newest v45 this option worked! But no longer in v45 → Bug (instead of feature 🙁 )!

  • Falconet

Still some issues. It hangs more, uses more RAM, and today has been a horrible day when it comes to not being able to close tabs. Clicking and clicking on tabs doesn’t close them and neither does trying to close Opera. Need to use task manager from OS. Or the Opera one (which then shuts down Opera since I tried to close it earlier I guess)

  • “Opera Reborn, the first browser to allow messengers to reside within your browser”

False. I used Rockmelt 8 years ago(!!) which had Facebook messenger built in. I only stopped using it because I realized I didn’t want to be constantly bombarded/distracted by having a constant messenger. I definitely won’t be getting this.

    • Nachiketa Ramesh

Its an opt in feature. You don’t HAVE to use it. I don’t. I even hide the button.

      • True. My primary point was that they’re claiming to be the first, but they’re 6.5 years behind Rockmelt (I looked it up and apparently I had the year wrong: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rockmelt). Rockmelt no longer exists, either because they just did a terrible job of PR or because this feature wasn’t enough to draw users in.

    • Leonardo Gomes

It had a link to Messenger or it had a link to Facebook?

      • It had a messenger built in that integrated with Facebook. Not a link.

        • Leonardo Gomes

So it was not Facebook Messenger?

          • I’m not sure what you are asking. It was a messenger built directly into the browser that allowed you to chat with Facebook friends. It was “a” Facebook messenger. Back then “Messenger” didn’t exist… it was just Facebook chat.

          • Leonardo Gomes

Anyway, Opera Presto had ICQ integrated during a while so I guess Opera still can say they were the first with an integrated messenger. 🙂

  • Andrea Avesani

It’s all wonderful, thanks for this new step into a better web experience. Anyway, why is Opera still missing the reader mode?? Even Edge has it and it works pretty well. Firefox is leading it with the integration of Poket. Why is Opera still behind? I feel today that’s a must, it’ll be extremely useful especially for whom use the Personal News section.

    • 3psilon

Absolutely. There are extensions for this functionality though.

  • I like the new interface. Keep up the good work.

  • Zeyes

Not a fan of the new placement of the tab menu dropdown at the very top of the page. I’m using programs by Actual Tools to extend the functionality of windows, and Opera’s tab menu button is now buried underneath the extra window buttons (and consequently inaccessible unless I disable Actual Tools).

  • 3psilon

I like the new sidebar concept but right now it’s very limited and it somewhat conflicts with the old sidebar. Once Slack is added, it’s going to be very useful, though.

The good thing about the sidebar is that it doesn’t really take away screen estate.

Idea: ability to add bookmark icons that open in a similar small window e.g. if you want to take a quick look at the weather or news.

Maybe its just me, but I think that it looks better. Please consider it as an option.

But you are pretty close, so Im happy for that. There is still some need to fix menu button, which is not much different from tab while new sidebar is undocked and “new tab button” and “list menu” on the upper right could be also modernized on Win7. Overall, I do love new design and icons.

    Hey.
Since Beta Reborn, the ”use system color in the top bar” option does not work. Win10.

    • Benjamin Hojnik

      same here. really annoying.

      • Stay tuned.

        • Paweł A.

          We look forward to improving.

Hello DEVS, i wanted to share an issue:

I updated today to v45 and started having following issue (you wont see it on a screenshot, so i made two photos):

    Opera 45: http://i.imgur.com/Izk5tsL.jpg

Chrome and previous Opera (44): http://i.imgur.com/7VwD0C8.jpg

Of course, the line is only blue because my desktop wallpaper is bluish; if i had red wallpaper, the line would be red as well. Already tried: -disable all exts -create new user folder -install portable version -reinstall

    Opera: 45.0.2552.812 (PGO) (x64), Windows 7 Ultimate x64, RES.: 1920×1080 native, GTX 980

P.S. I dont think that “new” icons are modern and elegant. Win 95 neither new nor elegant, trust me. Why do you guys think Win 10 looks cool or modern? Really? If so, you don’t have any sense of taste. IMO

Btw, one more thing. If users running Opera on Win 10, they already have those (ugly) navigations buttons by default. Why on earth do i have to have those on Windows 7? Man…

    • That’s a know bug. It was already fixed in developer channel. The fix should get into stable soon.

  • Eduardo Albuquerque

How to set up Telelgram? I’m not using Facebook Messenger I watched at the video promo

    • Leonardo Gomes

Right click on sidebar to enable the icon then click on it and follow the instructions.

      • Eduardo Albuquerque

        Obrigado.

  • Marek

I still miss the option to open new tabs always at the end and possibility to stash them. However “after close show most recently active tab” is good step forward.

  • How do I get rid of the ugly hard to see light neon blue folder Icons? How do I get rid of the ugly hard to see light gray on white Text? How do I get rid of the ugly hard to see gray on light gray Text? How do I get the old Icons back as the new slim ones are hard to see with poor vision? Who decides I want Icons without Color? Both Linux and Widows have system theme, but now I can no longer use it in Opera. Why am I forced to use No Choice? One persons Pretty is an others Ugly!!!

  • rek

Are there any plans to integrate the extensions sidebar into the new sidebar?

  • kamil

am i the only one having this issue? (black bars on the sides and the bottom) http://i.imgur.com/HL7D2mm.png

  • Hadley Zedras

The neon concept is way cooler

  • Hi guys! Well done!
I’m very excited about this release,
    But
I have to point out some issues:

    1) If I have multiple windows open, and whatsapp is running in the sidebar of one of these, I can’t use it into another windows panel because Whatsapp (shit) think that this colud be another session and force me to move the previous open session to the new window. This is very boring and it’s an issue only for Whatsapp (shit again). In this moment I still prefere to run whatsapp via desktop app

    2) Sometime it seems the performance of the sidebar panel for chat (each chat) is slow. I don’t know if is a problem depending from Opera of from the app, but I think it could improved

    3) give back the old favourite folder size and color. Now are too small and the light blue, that I like but reminds me the old Acqua Theme of MacOS, is not coordinate with the system color of Windows/Linux/Mac

    Thank you!

  • Damien Legros

    Hi guys,
Are there any plans to support custom sidebar elements like in vivaldi?

  • As arch linux is growing I am wondering weather or not there are any plans to include an Arch linux build of opera developer in the future?

Opera is the best browser in the world! Greetings from the dictatorial Ukraine!

  • voyager75000

I really love the new design with it’s features. Great work!!
BUT: it really feels, that the performance decreased. Some JS-heavy sites became unresponsive and laggy (had to switch to m.facebook.com for instance) and Amazon Prime is no joy to watch anymore (I really hate to use IE for that!!)

    System Info:
    Win8.1 (x32)
    2GB RAM
    64GB eMMC
    Intel Atom Z2760

    • Maarten

This version sucks. Designs has gone bad (afwful colours, no OS integration anymore, lousy icons). Besides this version is so buggy it’s a shame it has been released.

  • Alisson | SoldierOS

Great design update. Opera is almost perfect now.

It would be if I didn’t had to open Internet Explorer to watch 60fps videos. This is ridiculous
    http://i.imgur.com/YdN86aG.png

    • Meu Usuario

For sure Opera is taking up more resources, but I also believe you are watching videos in HD on Internet Explorer and in 4K on Opera. But still, yes, Opera is taking up a bit more resources in 1080p comparing to IE, and in comparison to Chrome it takes about the same CPU % and less Disk %.

      • Alisson | SoldierOS

What? No! Both videos are in 1080p, my system does not even support 4K

        • Can you post exact link to that video?
Can you check if you have hardware acceleration enabled (opera://flags/#media-windows-mf-demuxer)

          • Alisson | SoldierOS

            Here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5MESKmFtQs
In both browsers I watched at 1080p and 60fps. IE was smooth as butter, while Opera was lagging.

And as I said, I don’t have hardware acceleration enabled, I turned it off some time ago trying to fix this same problem.

          • Alexander Addams

Just watched it on linux mint in opera, was smooth as butter…

    • Eroticus

      Turn on Hardware acceleration.

      • Alisson | SoldierOS

        It is already off

        • Eroticus

Turn on, not turn off lol. that’s why all useage drops on the CPU and it’s lagging.

          • Alisson | SoldierOS

Oh, sorry, I misread. It was off in the first place. Turning it on did nothing

    • Maarten

Very bad design, Oper ahs become UGLY. Opera has changed for the worse. Opera was almost perfect now they have completely screwed up with v45.

  • Excrafter

    Hello,

first of all, Opera always was my favourite internet browser.
    But now my problem:

Im hosting a game-server on my pc, and people are complainging about lag. So I went into the task manager and waneted to look what I can close. And I discovered about ten “Opera Internet Browser” processes/tasks which together use up about 1GB of my ram. I mean, its not a big deal, I can close them, but still, I want to know why theyre there and (if possible) how to prevent that, so I dont have to close them manually.

    • Hi. I’m glad you like it.

Looking at Opera through system’s task manager gives little insight what’s really taking all your memory. It’s much better choice to use the Task Manager that is included in Opera. First you need to enable Developer Tools (Opera menu > More Tools > Enable Developer Tools) then you can open Task Manager from the Developer Tools menu. This tool will show you exactly what’s eating your RAM. Please mind that often extensions are taking way too much memory. For example it’s much better to use Opera’s built-in ad block than extension (if you want to limit memory usage).

  • Tomivnek

Why can’t I import passwords from Chrome to Opera? The option is completely missing from the import dialog.

    • On macOS that functionality is missing.

      • Tomivnek

I’m running Linux. Even if I try importing just bookmarks or browsing history the dialog fails with this message “We’re sorry but Opera could not import any data.”

  • Whipme

Now we need mail and IRC integration – just like in good old Presto Opera.

  • Rust

My browser tabs are now gray (not the DARK gray when selecting that option), but it appears the gray tabs are the default now ….and this is horrible for my eyes that suffer from contrast effect. I need to get back the lighter tabs. How do I do this? Alternatively, how do I revert to the browser version I was using before the update?

  • Fred Frith

Why do you change things and break things without at least giving users the option to DECIDE if they want the change? I used OPERA because I liked it better than Chrome. Can I make a settings change and get my old folder size and color back? Who thinks small pale powder blue folders are more visible or usable? Looking cool to a developer does not make something more useful. Remember Windows 8? People could use Windows 7 and hated Windows 8 because it was miserable to use. BUT IT LOOKED REALLY GREAT! Please give your community the choice to use Opera the way they prefer.

  • Hassan Zakai

Hi, for me the tablet mode isn’t working correctly (force touch interface under browser settings doesn’t do anything). Neither does the show system color on the top bar or the disable tab bar’s top spacing. Not really sure why.

Youtube.com is a mess, I don’t blame opera for it. When I get out of a full screen video, there is a gap from the top of the window and the tabs for some reason, it goes away when i click to another tab. It is generally really slow, and clicking my shortcut from the bookmarks bar makes the youtube website completely blank except for the search bar, I have to reload it in order to get the full site to work.

Lastly, the pop-out video player has been getting worse for me. It used to be in the aspect ratio of the video I was watching without any black border (16:9). It would be resizable only in 16:9 so I wouldn’t have to keep constantly adjust it to remove the unsightly black bars on the sides, now it is really bad. There are black bars no matter what I do and the video title remains there for a long time, taking up a large portion of the player. There are also no buttons for me to full screen the video from the player as well. Not really sure why

  • Mad_Man_Moon

Anyone know how to *completely* remove the facebook and whatsapp features (not just ‘unpin’)?

I’m not comfortable *at all* using something that has FB code built in.

    • Leonardo Gomes

As already discussed around here, they are just links the pages. So just uncheck them in sidebar and they will be gone.

      • Mad_Man_Moon

it’s clearly application embedding, though. how is it just links to pages?

        • Leonardo Gomes

The links may be hard-coded but they still are just links that open in a special window.

          • Nekomajin43

I hope they see now how bad idea was it to include preselected messengers instead of web panels in the first place.

          • Leonardo Gomes

Well, without the pre-installed messengers, many people wouldn’t even know that they could add them so I think that even with web panels those messengers would be there.

          • Nekomajin43

They talk about privacy with VPN and adblock, but they integrate fb stuff into the browser. We know how actually it works, but you can see a lot of people complaining. If I were a regular user, seeing fb stuff on the speed dial, the sidebar and even on the adblocker whitelist would make me concerned.

If they want to make this right, it must work exactly like the speed dial.

          • Leonardo Gomes

Well, I’m not so sure if so many regular users would care that much about it.

          • Nekomajin43

If we always say that regular users don’t care, then why do they develop anything at all? If regular users don’t care about security, then no need for the VPN. If regular users don’t use features, then no need for the adblock or the video popout. I know they are the majority, but they only need a big google search box. The developers can be disbanded, no need for all this circus with features and security.

          • Leonardo Gomes

Of course regular users care about security, about new features that may help them having a better experience on the web and so on, they may just don’t care about the sane things or in the same way as a more advanced user.
And even among those advanced users as well as among the regular ones there are people who care more or less about this or that.

There are lots of people on social networks noiwadays and those most probably will like to have an Messenger to easly talk to their friends while surfing the web instead of being bothered by it.

That was my point, not everyone see Facebook or Google or anything related as a danger. They see those as something useful for them.

          • Nekomajin43

So now they satisfy a part of the userbase while completely neglect the other part. If a + sign works in the speed dial, why would it not work on the sidebar? They should offer the services like the speed dial suggestions, not with preselected stuff. The preselected stuff is bad in the speed dial too, but there those just open the webpages. On the sidebar, they load an app-like page, which is very deceptive.

Btw, what if some idiot writes a post on a popular blog or tech site without the proper knowledge, claiming that Opera has built in fb stuff? How many potential users will bury the browser?

          • Leonardo Gomes

Isn’t how things work in this world since ever? You can’t always please everyone and when you take a side, you unplease the other side.

Sidebar is not Speed Dial. A page added on the sidebar would have to open on a panel and fit in it.

Also, having a messenger icon on the sidebar causes more impact than a + icon.

Probably the same ones who are complaining about the messengers already.

      • Mad_Man_Moon

Also, i had to load a billion days of comments to even find *anything* that even mentioned the facebook shit. no where on this page do opera describe the chat apps as ‘just web pages’.

      • Herr Pietrus

If they were links there wouldn’t be a problem to add more of them. Perhaps they’re paid and that’s why we have to wait for more pages… But on the other hand – Facebook doesn’t need any adverts in not very popular browser…

        • Mad_Man_Moon

yep. also … i noticed facebook was suddenly an allowed ad partner in my ads. same with google, baidu, and more.

          • Leonardo Gomes

Those are in the ad-blocker’s excepctions list since the feature was introduced.

        • Leonardo Gomes

They are just the most used ones.

  • ocdhd

Wow way to go. Change for the sake of change won’t make you more popular. Blue Folder icons? Tab Color? Seriously you want people to go back to Firefox or Chrome? Ok no problem. Just keep breaking it by not giving users a choice on GUI they want. ZERO points.

  • ace7777

I love Opera for three reasons 1.) It’s quick, 2.) the VPN, 3.) the built-in ad blocking. However, I was not too happy to see the layout and look change. That means another new thing to learn for no clear reason. It’s like Windows forever updating, forcing you to go through a new learning curve and causing malfunctions in other apps.

    • Whipme

What big change do you see? It’s all at the same place and nothing new to learn.

  • Matgoa Production

    Nice

  • Anna

Fuc* this stupid version,I delete and again install 44.version,thank you for stress and destroy my 2 days!

  • Herbert Grönemeier

Please change Opera to the old layout and remove the messenger integrations… The dark mode is a good change! 🙂

    • Joorre

A better solution is to create a choice for users;) I love the new design. Integrations are not necessary when we have the applications installed on the PC. you can disable them, so do it if you don’t like them 😉

      • Herbert Grönemeier

Yes, it would be better to let the people decide which design they love.

  • Joorre
    • Anna

      Thanks,and i see opera 36 and 44 looks simmilar?

      • Joorre

Yes but 44 is more ‘modern’, more animations, other icons. But if you are annoyed by sidebar in Opera 44, you can easily disabled it. On the bottom of sidebar you have a ‘unpin sidebar’ button 😉

  • Anna

It’s a nasty bad idea, I’m getting used to the old stuff, and longer loading opera, and my some programs not working, thanks but maybe next time ask,in my fav opera is 44,and i install now

    • Andrea Avesani

I don’t understand what’s do nasty in accepting a slightly different colour or spend 2 min testing another colour scheme.. at least you’d have all the new updates. But if you prefer to live in the past, your choice.
Then I don’t understand what I should have asked, old explain.

      • Anna

Not all old things must be worse than newer ones, i am straightforward to old version which is important to me and easier to use

  • I love the update! Good work!

  • Ogunwusi Yinka Samuel

    AM LOVING THIS
NEW DEVELOPMENT IT’S CLEARLY APPS embedding

    http://www.codedwap.co

  • HecThor

Please! add also more themes, not only dark and light mode. That would be cool, like the old opera!

  • Ksnoo

Sorry to say that, but opera now looks ugly on mac because ut brings windows 10 style to macos! Do you plan to change that?

  • redfox

    VPN not working again…

  • Jason Shaw

The new version is a pile of only doggy poop. Since the new version, the ad blocker hasn’t blocked all ads, in fact less than 1 in 10 and the free VPN wont connect.

It doesn’t matter how pretty you make it, with all the extra themes and light and dark edges, if the darn thing doesn’t work properly.

    • Maarten

I agree. Besides new UI sucks too.

  • House Manager

I just want the VPN to work. What seems to be the problem?

    • redfox

I have the older O44 and VPN is unavailable too. There was a significant slowdown of the VPN servers yesterday, today nothing at all.
EDIT: Its working again, after a longer (hours) delay.

  • Izer0

What the hell you do, new Opera updated on my side, oh my GOD! You are making Opera only for “simple” users with 5 tabs and 300 click on back button?? For users with magnifier to find tabs between 300 tabs? No way to disable this “shiny” skin? What about people which have problem with eyes and does not able to use high contrast black theme or absolutely low contras “shiny” theme? Because I am sure you are not like experienced advanced users, I must revert back to 44 and stay here for ever. Have I nice shiny unusable days, you are like Microsoft, making unusable software, but “shiny” is soooo important. Why, why why 🙁

    • BK

Hi @nanit76:disqus . You are with us for a long time now, and I would like to properly understand what is the issue for you. Can you try to write it again, what use case is broken for you due to O45 update?

      • Izer0

Hi @BK, thanks for interesting, I appreciate that. Opera have too white UI layout, I don’t see separators between tabs on white theme, I can’t use black theme because of high contrast and my eyes problems. Opera is too bright or too black right now, unusable for users with more than few tabs, she is “nice”, but not usable. 🙁 I am working with Opera 10 – 12 hours daily, it’s important to have a proper visibility of important things (tabs) and don’t be shined for so long time also. Maybe some silver theme can help if you can’t leave the original tabs.

        • Barbara Rogos-Turek

Hi Izer0, I’d like to investigate this issue. Could you attach screenshots from your browser when using many tabs? Thanks in advance 🙂

          • Izer0

Hi, not so happy to install O45 back, but I did it and you can look here: http://www.softpae.com/opera_tabs.png

            1. row – Opera 44 on W7
            2. row – Opera 44 on W10
            3. & 4. row – Opera 45 on W10
            5. row – Opera 45 on W7 – my current screen with O45

There is a big difference between O44 (row 1,2) and O45, tabs separator is more visible on O44, is longer, especially with old style tabs, it is big difference. Separators by RGB – O44 old style: 150,150,150; O44 flat style: 163,163,163; O45 flat style: 200,200,200. Going higher. Color difference between tab color and separator (contrast) – O44 flat: 163 vs 203 = 40, O45 flat: 200 vs 220 = 20!!! Ufff, this is maybe nice slightly looking tabs, but usable only for young people and only if you are using few tabs. I am developer, I have daily about 300+ tabs, 440 right now because I am reading lot of materials. Opera 45 is not usable for advanced users, not to mention users with eye problems (greater sensitivity after surgery, like I have). Anyway, it’s also bad from the UI design point of view. It is only “nice”. 🙁

          • Ari

As a 10 year developer, this is the first time I see a person with that many tabs opened. I mean come on, how is that even usable in the first place? There exist bookmarks you know, that’s what developers have tons of, arranged in folders, not tabs.

          • Izer0

No comment, we are different and I will not describe you all the ways how you can end with this numbers of tabs (search in my oldest comments). I respect differences. But one simple example … I am working as IT system administrator also, so if you have 50 users and they have something you need to study, then you quickly get 300 – 400 tabs. In few days. It’s easier to have recent pages in tabs instead to searching in 6000 bookmarks (that may still growing as you read).

And bookmarks … I have 6000 bookmarks (since 1996), I open it only when I must, because – try to load 6000 bookmarks in new Opera. Old Opera – no problem, native bookmarks manager – low memory and CPU consumptions, but new “Blink” Opera renders bookmarks as HTML and this is memory and CPU intensive process, this is one of 3 weak points of Opera.

          • Barbara Rogos-Turek

Thank you for all your effort. We will take a closer look at contrasts and visibility of big number of tabs.

          • Izer0

Thank you very much, I would still like to stay with the Opera, I am with Opera for long long time. I can send you my Session file for testing. Thanks.

          • Izer0

By the way – Opera is still not able to fix favicon displaying on tabs with more than 220 tabs. It works sometimes when you first start Opera after new update, but never more. If it ever does, then there is a problem inside Opera.

      • Nekomajin43

People have eye problems and low quality displays.

Some people like to open many links from a page on new tabs, instead of opening one and using the back button all the time.

        • Izer0

It is problem on IPS display also, it is to much bright and low contrast on white theme, is’t hard to find separator between 300+ tabs.

  • Adham El Banhawy

This is an amazing update just like the few ones before it. You are all doing a great job actually revolutionizing the web browsing experience. I have managed to get friends and coworkers interested in your browser and received nothing but good feedback.

  • Maarten

“Opera has died” was a more appropriate title for this blog. Reborn? Are you laughing?

  • Pavel A.

I like the new update, the new sidebar is actually somewhat functional. Can you add more features/extensions to it instead of just the messengers? Because having two sidebars next to each other is a bit much.

Extremely important thing that has to be fixed: when the opera browser window is not active the title bar of it should change color to visually make that clear to the user. Every other Windows application does that, and the older version of Opera browser did that too. It’s clearly a bug that needs to be fixed, as curently whether the browser is active or not, there is no visual indication to let the user know about it’s state.

What OS and what Google page? I’m not able to reproduce it here on Windows 10.

      • FohlenETech

I’m using Windows 10 Pro, these are just the main google pages, home page to search stuff, and pages where you actually search things, it’s been doing this since I got the update. And it only got worse when I updated the browser again (today).

I’m getting the same issue, it appears as opera is loading the non-javascript version of google, even though JS is enabled in setting. I haven’t changed any of my settings and this just started happening today. Please help!

package extraction failure message keeps coming up. any ideas?

    • Leonardo Gomes

What message? How it happens? What OS?

      • Jonathan Leung

I am using windows 10. I went to the opera site and pressed download now. Opened it and when the loading screen comes up it tells me package extraction failure. I have tried running it as administrator and all. I use opera on my Mac no problem. Sometimes it tells me to download the full installer as well. But the same message pops up “package extraction failure”.

        • Leonardo Gomes

Did you try downloading it again? What about using the offline installer?

          • Jonathan Leung

I have tried constantly for the past week. Tried using the offline installer as well… Restarting my computer… and yes, I deleted and kept on downloading the packages again. But still no luck 🙁

          • Leonardo Gomes

Download the portable installer from the link below and check if you can run it.
            http://www.opera.com/computer/portable

          • Jonathan Leung

also failed. i mean, i can download every other browser and run it (TOR, firefox, chrome, edge….) just having problems with the one i want to use…

    • Vux777

I have local extensions installed…no problem on Win 10

How to download new purple background image in Opera to make it windows background image? It is extremely cool.

  • FluffyBoyo

How about extending the dark UI mode to also include ALL settings pages, add-on pages and experiments etc. A full real dark mode mode which works across all Opera areas. Optional on each settings, extensions p[age to turn dark mode on or off, once the master dark mode is ON.

I had about three windows of opera open, with even some tabs ( youtube, something to read etc. )
After the last update it become horrible. All youtube tabs become black. They work, but the main page is still black. Closing opera and re-open it does vanish the problem by black screens but also close the other opera windows. that´s really annoying

I am not sure if someone posted this issue, but Opera 44 have problem with localhost, it does not recognize localhost in some cases, point to some weird IP address instead of 127.0.0.1.

There is a clear performance issue since this new UI has been released and that was already noticeable when it was in dev. branch.
Here with a stable version, same thing.

On low-end computer (not so low-end), the main window when moved is clearly the painfulest movement of my geek life : it is stuttering and looks slugish and heavy. You know when there is kind of a looong delay between you move the mouse and move the window on-screen.

It is the same thing for the webpages : they don’t scroll smoothly, everything seems to be saturated like this new version is a ressources eater from all sides !

Precision said : It is not related to my PC. Chrome / Vivaldi and other browser are scrolling smooth on screen which was also the case with the 44 of Opera, perfectly smooth and not anymore.

This is – really – annoying people.

    • José Fernando

Same here for me. Smooth before on 44, now feels heavy….it’s like a step back :/

  • opera is really very good browser,it is lite free and easy to use.

  • Sanket Mohapatra

extremely happy with performance and it is very delight to see there browser I like to get a new look and performance improvement
