My original New Year's resolutions being both vague and stupendously unlikely, I'm going to go for something more serious. I'm going to try the vegetarian thing again. I was (more or less) a vegetarian for a few years back in the States, and then I quit when I came here, but now I'm feeling guilty about it and I'm going to try again. I'm posting this here as an incentive, so I will be publically shamed if I fail.

So...if you don't hear from me for a while, it's probably because I've STARVED TO DEATH. The amount of meat in everything here is insane; today I got by on a bagel and rice with fish with the fish taken out. I'm thinking maybe I should let myself eat fish, but I can't think of a good ethical justification why that should be okay. If you hear of any damning anti-fish information, like that fish have been involved in ninety percent of terrorist attacks over the past five years, let me know.

Meh, I dunno, I'm a pescatarian - no moral reasons. Fish is the only meat (white or red) that doesn't make me feel odd. Raw fish sushi makes me feel fantastic, I think I basically survive on it (how middle class, I know). And it's brain/sex food!

Brain/sex food? I think that right now, a sex drive and even more of a tendency to overthink everything are the two LAST things I need.

Fish aren't smart enough to feel pity or sympathy for, shellfish even less so. If you'd be willing to RAID a cockroach in your apartment, you should be willing to dine on lobster, considering they are approximately equivalent in terms of thought/feeling.

These are beings that are commanded by instinct, the very idea of thought is not applicable to them. A tuna simply does what a tuna does, responding to its environment without thought but rather according to its design as a tuna. It makes as much difference to it whether it winds up in the belly of a shark or in the belly of Scott as it makes a difference to a stone where it ends up being used in a castle or the stone wall of a farmer.

Plus Salmon taste so delicious, it'd be a crime NOT to eat them!

Only problems - I do avoid killing insects in my apartment whenever I acn, and most the people I know are commanded by instinct. Myself included most of the time.

I've done the vegetarian thing before. It was cool for like a week. But that's my opinion.

Moral arguments aside, you may want to consider at least eating fish until you are back in a place where you can get food options that cater better to your proposed diet. Otherwise you are just going to end up frustrated.

Want justification for eating fish?

They are terrorists! They mine mercury to use in suicide poisoning attacks! They tried to choke the Queen Mother to death!

And every fish to that you fail to destroy means another fish left over to feed Pockey the Penguin.

Those dastardly fish! Carrying mercury up the food chain into seals and whales!
And...I LIKE Pokey the Penguin!
