This is going to be long but im on the tram into work so i have some time to kill First and foremost, welcome to the best football club in the world. I feel honoured that someone so far away would care about a sports team from my northern English city.

1. Class of 92- The wonderful story of probably the most successful group of youth players the world will ever have have Manchester United- Beyond the Promised Land -1999 treble winning season 25 Years United - focus on SAF United (2011) - on the munich disaster and how the club was reborn following it.

  1. The traditional number system goes as follows and the corresponding numbers have roles to play, this will be for a traditional 442 1 = Goalkeeper. Straight forward, stop the ball from going in the net. 2= Right back. The full backs role is to primarily defend from wide positions when out of possession and bomb on providing width when in possession. 3= Left back. See above 4= Defensive midfielder. Shield the defence in the middle of the park. Be a ball winner and keep things moving. 5= Centre Half. these are your primary defenders. 6= Centre Half. these are your primary defenders. 7= Right Winger. Provide width when attack and service to the strikers. 8= Attacking Midfielder. This would be the player that links the midfield and attack operating in the last 3rd of the pitch. 9= Your striker, this is the guy you want to be scoring your goals operating primarily in the oppositions box. 10= your centre forward in between a 8 and a 9 linking play and setting others up. 11= left winger. Winger. Provide width when attack and service to the strikers.

For a more modern 4231 its slighly different. 1 Goalkeeper 2 Right back 3 Left back 4 Centre back 5 Centre back 6 Central midfielder (more defensive) 7 Right winger 8 Central midfielder 9 Striker 10 Central midfielder (more attacking) 11 Left winger

But all in all jersey numbers don't mean shit anymore. But when you describe a player as a number 10 what that means is theirs a specific role associated with that player.

3. A talisman simply put is the player a team is built around, for example this season you could argue our talisman have been one of pogba or zlatan.

4. Playing deep means to set up defensively far back in you own half with your defence on the edge of you own box.

5. MUTV app and subscription can be found here: http://www.manutd.com/en/News-And-Features/Club-News/2017/Feb/Manchester-United-launches-MUTV-subscription-based-app-in-165-countries.aspx

6. The United Stand and Euro Football daily are great content producers others i recommend are full time devils and the football republic.

7. The best football related apps I have used are OneFootball and the BBCSport app.

8. The offside rule is when a player moves beyond the oppositions defensive line prior to the ball being played into him. It only comes into effect when a player is deemed interfering with play. Thats why you sometimes don't see offside called even when player is in a offside position.

9. A testimonial is offered to a player when he completes a level of service to a club for Example after 10 years at the club Micheal Carrick was offered a testimonial at The theatre of dreams basically he gets to organise his own game at old trafford. Basically a kick about with his mates. Make sure to watch because a lot of Manchester United Legends and Icons will be involved.

10. Can't comment on this since I am a rainsoaked Manc. Not a sundrenched Los Angeleno.

11. Best thing I can think of is try to get a 2014 french home kit then just get pogba printed on it.

I'll answer the couple about positions that I know,

2) I don't know the originations of the numbers, but typically the numbers 1-11 have specific positions associated with them, but for most teams and Utd 1 refers to a goalkeeper 99% of the time, 2-5 are defenders, 6 & 8 are midfielders, 10 specifically refers to an attacking midfield playing behind the striker, 9 being the striker, 11 and 7 in recent years apply to wingers.

3) A talisman refers to a 'star player' in a team, like the player that leads the team.

4) 'Playing deep' usually refers to center midfielder that creates attacks and chances while playing near and around the defenders rather than up top.

5) Pretty sure there is an app where you can pay monthly.

6) I mean, whatever you fancy, but I think both of those channels rely heavily on clickbait and will comment on anything related to Man Utd whether it is reliable or not, especially football daily, try Fulltimedevils, they aren't saints but are more reliable.

8) It's both, if a player doesn't interfere with play when he is offside, like either touching the ball, forcing a defender to chase after him, or getting in the way of the keeper, play can continue if the player is offside*.

9) A testimonial is basically a friendly game held for players once they play for over 10 years at a club, basically a send off and thanks for their loyalty.

I see this posted all the time and its always a link to that forum post or a blog entry. Ive never ever heard this outside of reddit, do you have any other proof?

[–]M1904 5 ポイント6 ポイント  (5子コメント)

It bares a bit of truth with leeds and liverpool fans using it in songs about munich, but its not worth getting worked up over.

[–]evilvile 0 ポイント1 ポイント  (4子コメント)

Yeah Ive seen it a few times, and I'm sure it has that kernel of truth. But honestly I stop taking anyone who posts it seriously because it seems like bollocks being repeated everytime someone says Man U.

[–]M1904 3 ポイント4 ポイント  (3子コメント)

Thats why I said its not getting worked up about, when it was used was a long time ago. I avoid saying it because I hate the way it sounds and was told as a kid not to call United that, but that was when the wounds were a bit fresher.

[–]evilvile 0 ポイント1 ポイント  (2子コメント)

Fair enough, my point is more that when you google that term the only reference to Man U being an insult is exactly the linked post rewritten or copy pasted across a couple of forums ans blogs. I live in Manchester and people say Man U all the time. Its just an interesting example of how 'facts' on the internet can spout from one bad source.

[–]M1904 0 ポイント1 ポイント  (1子コメント)

Yeah the whole 'WHEN YOU CALL UNITED MAN U ITS LITERALLY LIKE YOURE KILLING DUNCAN EDWARDS ALL OVER AGAIN'. Is absolutely ridiculous. It way more common for mancs to say it now than it was in the 80s. That's why it isn't a insult, because it's become normalised.

[–]evilvile 0 ポイント1 ポイント  (0子コメント)

Yeah absolutely. It annoys me most because i see it repeated so much and its so obviously a Reddit echo chamber of people being told off then saving that link and using it against the next person. Its a bullshit circlejerk.

[–]icefaang 1 ポイント2 ポイント  (0子コメント)

It's because it's bs, it's only considered an insult on internet forums, Mourinho has called us Man U plenty of times, it's not an insult.

Ill answer whichever questions I can. Football from here on means soccer.

  1. In the past, players didnt have fixed numbers. Players on the field were assigned numbers from 1-11. These are what the numbers/positions generally mean:

1 - Goalkeeper

2-5 are generally defenders. You will see most full backs use 2 and 5. Centre backs tend to pick 3 or 4

6, 8 are central midfielders

7,11 are wingers

9 is the striker

10 is the attacking midfielder

Nowadays players are supposed to have a fixed number throughout the season. With teams having 2 or 3 players in the same position, others will make do with another number. So, actual shirt numbers don't mean much anymore.

  1. Talisman isnt really a football term. Its sports in general. Its just the most important player of the team. The guy who can win matches on his own.

  2. Playing deep is playing a bit more defensively. A team playing deep means the team wants to take little risk and try to defend.

  3. MUTV app is available in Play store. Im pretty sure it is in the app store too.

  4. One Football, Sqawka are pretty good.

  5. Offside is if the player who recieves the pass is goal side of the last defender WHEN THE PASS IS MADE. So, if the player is faster than the defender, he might get ahead of the defender by the time he gets the pass.

  6. Testimonial is a friendly match played in honour of a player completing 10 years at a club. In the past footballers didnt really make much. So the funds raised from the testimonial used to be their retirement fund. Nowadays the funds are just given to charity.

[–]WildBuffalo 0 ポイント1 ポイント  (0子コメント)

/1. Your understanding of numbers in a defence is completely wrong.
/2. Playing deep just means playing closer to your goal. Doesn't necessarily mean playing more defensively. When people say "Messi comes deep" they mean he's going backwards to get the ball, not to play more defensively.
/5. If the player is interfering in play it's still offside, it doesn't have to be the one who receives the ball.

[–]TrickyxoneCoppell 0 ポイント1 ポイント  (0子コメント)

You have some good answers here except the offside rule, if the ball is played forward and the player receiving the ball is in the oppositions half there has to be two players between the player receiving the ball and the oppositions goal (in a straight line across the pitch), as far as FIFA goes it's annoying, if you don't touch the ball you under most circumstances wouldn't be called offside. You can be offside even when not receiving the ball if you're deemed to be interfering with play, you can't be offside from a throw in or goal kick.

First things first - Don't call us Man U. I think I saw a good link posted below by a kind redditor explaining why . You should go through that .

[–]ObiWanKenobiNilMartial 2 ポイント3 ポイント  (1子コメント)

Is there anybody that actually cares about this? I've lived in Manchester for the past 4 years and I've never heard anybody moan/complain about being called Man U

[–]capri_stylee 0 ポイント1 ポイント  (0子コメント)

It's often repeated that Man U is an offensive reference to Munich, but it had been used from at least the 30s, I've posted links before showing badges and paper reports using Man U 20 years before the Munich disaster, on mobile at the minute so I cba hunting them down again.
