It's only a ban on registering players. They can sell whoever they want and buy whoever they want, the bought ones just can't be registered or played in matches until the winter.

The only way it affects us is if they lose the appeal and Griezmann decides to stay so he's not leaving them in the lurch. He can still leave if he wants to though and because of the buyout clause AM don't have any say in it.

So buyout overrules any control Atleti might have. Cool. Thanks for the response. Transfer business and its nitty-gritties always gives me a headache.

Buy out doesn't overrule anything unfortunately.

Edit: It does. It literally does.

It actually does. That's literally the purpose of the buyout clause.

Legally, if Griezmann pays Atletico €85M, he "buys out" the contract with Atletico, meaning Atletico get no further say or control in the contract, and Griezmann is free to terminate the contract and leave the club, if he wants.

The "if he wants" part of my statement depends on the result of the appeal by CAS. I think he's basically saying he will stay with Atletico if the transfer ban is upheld, since Atletico cannot enlist another player to play in his stead. If the ban is lifted, he will leave for United.

Yeah you're right. I was trying to get at the fact that the buyout clause isn't a straightforward process, it tends make things more complicated. I phrased my reply very poorly. Also I had in my head that the clause only applied for transfers within Spain but I'm not sure where I dreamt that up.
