I have been programming for well over a decade and make well over 300k a year.

Programming allows you the flexibility to be your own boss & to work remotely anywhere in the world.

No time in history has the programmer become so relevant than in this digital era. Traditional brick n mortar businesses are going under while software businesses like Uber,Netflix,AirBnb etc are taking over.

For beginners I would recommend learning HTML,CSS,WordPress.This is what powers most web sites.

Next would be to gradually move into learning languages like JavaScript & PHP. Focus on frameworks like AngularJS,NodeJS,NativeScript,ReactJS,Apache Cordova etc. These frameworks will allow you to build powerfully interactive user interfaces for both desktop and mobile.

Once you get to an advanced level its good to pick up languages that power the back end. Learn Java(Amazon site is written in Java), C#,Python(Youtube written in Python).

Learn Spring,.Net,JEE,Docker

Learn about NoSQL databases, Redis & big data.

Bonus: Venture into learning about the cloud AWS,Mesos,CloudFoundry,Azure etc

Once you acquire some of the above skills, u are basically set for life. You can be your own boss. If you decide to work for a big corporate u can leave anytime because you will be in demand.
