About

“I Never Asked for This" Is a memorable quote by Adam Jensen, the main character in the hit 2011 video game Deus Ex: Human Revolution. The quote is often placed over an image of Jensen (or a character with Jensen’s iconic shades placed on them, ) wherein the image then serves as a reaction. For instance, this phrase can be used to express a feeling of disappointment about something. Perhaps a person was ashamed or embarrassed to have watched a video, or they followed a link to a spoiler they didn’t want to see. Quoting Adam Jensen the reply goes, “I never asked for this”.

Origin

The earliest instance of the phrase can be heard in the official trailer of the game, which was uploaded on March 15, 2010. Adam Jensen says this with regard to his augmentations, the cybernetic enhancements he was given after recuperating from a fatal injury.

Another official instance of the meme’s origin can be seen in-game. The player can opt to have Jensen say the phrase when talking to one of the NPCs. The player can choose to make this happen when asked about his augmentations.

Spread

On Friday, June 24th 2016 the official Deus Ex Mankind Divided twitter profile tweeted Sonic The Hedgehog, asking how to make Adam faster. Their subsequent response was as follows:

People saying “X never asked for this” (With X being someone or something) Has existed much longer than this video game, past the internet, past this century. This isn’t a meme, it’s a catchphrase.
