Today I visited the National Cathedral in Washington, a two-fer monument to high-church Episcopalianism and the American civil religion. There you can find Christus Victor and the northern Gothic alongside moon rock stained glass windows and Darth Vader gargoyles, all under one sacred canopy.
It’s probably good for me to keep tabs on this sort of thing. As @femmenietzsche perceptively noted, I’m totally prone to high-church Anglicanism in temperament and sensibility. (Albeit perhaps the high-church Anglicanism of 1917, but still.) So it’s very helpful to see how that all works out when left to its own devices for a hundred years.
Today, for example, we discovered that Mass and Evensong were cancelled due to a scheduling conflict with a Maypole dance.
Further evidince that something v. v. weird happened to Anglicanism in the USA/that Americans can find new ways to ruin...
I approve of all events referred to in this post.
