This is a meetup where we will discuss topics related to the blogg Slate Star Codex, for example rationality, science and effective altruism. Having read the blog is preferable but not required. Feel free to invite friends who might be interested.

We'll go through how to complete large or difficult reading tasks, how to efficiently memorize and understand the contents, and how to maintain the memory afterwards. We'll go through a few tried and true methods and hold a few exercises. Bring at least one text (technical manual, poetry, fiction) that you want to remember well and a notebook.

Goal factoring is a technique for introspection to help identify and achieve your goals. It helps choose day-to-day activities that efficiently achieve short and long term purposes. We'll focus on "bottom-up" goal factoring. Here, you look at activities you already do regularly, like check your email and play board games on Saturdays. You ask yourself what purposes these fulfill, like being reachable by colleagues and relaxing after the week. You brainstorm alternatives that achieve the same purpose. Finally, you see if you can get the same outcomes more efficiently.
