Teachers' pay

Teachers are paid according to an incremental salary scale and may be entitled to extra allowances.

Teachers’ salary scales

Three salary scales operate for teachers in second-level schools in Ireland.

Pre-2011 salary scale
Teachers who were first appointed to a Department paid teaching position prior to 1st January 2011 are paid according to a common basic salary scale. Click here to view this scale.

Post-2011 salary scale
Teachers who were first appointed to a Department paid teaching position after 1st January 2011 are paid according to a reduced 'new entrants' salary scale. Click here to view this scale.

Post February 1, 2012 salary scale
Teachers who were first appointed to a Department paid teaching position on or after 1 February 2012 do not benefit from qualification allowances and are, therefore, paid according to a revised ‘new entrants’ salary scale. Teachers who return to teaching following retirement are also paid according to this scale. Click here to view this scale.

Starting point

Teachers first appointed prior to 1st January 2011 began on the 3rd point of the pre-2011 salary scale and progress incrementally with each year of service.

Teachers first appointed between 1st January 2011 and 1st February 2012 began on the 1st point of the post-2011 salary scale and progress incrementally with each year of service.

Teachers first appointed after February 1st 2012 begin on the 1st point of the Post February 1, 2012 salary scale and progress incrementally with each year of service.

Incremental credit may apply for teachers with relevant recognised service. Click here for more information on incremental credit.

Teachers’ allowances

Depending on certain criteria, teachers are paid allowances for certain academic qualifications achieved and in relation to the nature of their job and duties.

Full details of allowance entitlements and rates are available here.

Allowances include:

Qualification allowances
A teacher who was in receipt of qualification allowances prior to 1st February 2012 continues to receive these allowances but is not entitled to any further allowance in relation to qualifications achieved after that date.

Teachers who were not in receipt of qualification allowances prior to 1st February 2012 are not entitled to any qualification allowances.

Other allowances
Other allowances relating to the nature of the job are payable to any teacher who was in receipt of that allowance prior to 1st February 2012.

Promotional allowances
Post of responsibility allowances, principal’s allowance and deputy principal allowances are payable to any teacher who is promoted to these posts.
