The Abbe School of Photonics (ASP) provides education programs with multidisciplinary coverage of optical and photonics technology field topics, ranging from current scientific aspects to engineering, with product applications possible in major economic sectors such as information and communication technologies, medicine and health, manufacturing and energy consumption. Enrolled students are trained for technical industry positions or scientific research positions in academia.

The Master's degree and doctoral programs are based upon the profound experience in optics education distinguishing the Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena (FSU Jena). The university has identified optics and photonics as one of its key profile fields in education and research. ASP's education programs are embedded in a modern research environment belonging to the Abbe Center of Photonics (ACP). This interfaculty center of the FSU Jena maintains strong bonds with local research institutions such as the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering, the Institute of Photonic Technology, the Helmholtz Institute Jena and a number of prominent industrial partners.

The ASP program is part of a full-scale education program under the auspices of the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy at the FSU Jena with special focus on optics and photonics. Students enrolled in a Master of Science in Photonics are offered a distinguished education track starting at the Bachelor level, continuing in the Master's degree program and culminating in a coordinated doctoral program (equivalent to the Ph.D.). Likewise, students who are enrolled in a Master of Science in Physics can specialize in optics and photonics by choosing among all the elective modules offered by ASP. Attractive scholarships are available for student's different educational stages.
