St. John's is the downtown Episcopal Church in Boulder, Colorado. We are an inclusive, Christ-centered community reaching out to all who are seeking a deeper spirituality and relationship with God and one another. Our congregation is made up of people of every generation who come from a wide variety of backgrounds - families, children and youth are rapidly growing in numbers. We are formed and strengthened through a variety of worship services, traditional music, contemplative prayer, spiritual and social justice formation programs, as well as meaningful service within the parish, the local community and in the larger world.

ComlineAd051417 A Special Choral Compline this Sunday, May 14

Compline is a 1500-year-old tradition that developed in the early monastic communities. The sanctuary is dark and quiet; there are candles, but no cell phones, no responses to have to follow, no preaching. It’s short: just 35-40 minutes. People are free to sit on the floor, sit up around the altar, or even lie down and allow the music to wash over them. It is a come-as-you-are experience of the presence of God, through music and prayer, using the beauty of our liturgy.

This Sunday's music includes works for Choir and solo saxophone, with special guest artist Pete Lewis. Pete is an Illinois native and has settled in the Denver area via Chicago, Portland, and Oakland. He has arranged and composed music for jazz combos, concert bands, sax quartets and big bands.  He has performed with the Joe Henderson Big Band, Natalie Cole, Tony Bennett, the 4 Tops, the Temptations, Linda Ronstadt, Ben Folds Five, the Colorado Symphony and the Philadelphia Orchestra, among others.

 Meet Dr. Joyce Kull, Our New Principal Organist

Dr. Joyce Shupe Kull, FAGO, ChM, DMA, (Organ Performance and Literature, University of Colorado) teaches organ at the Metropolitan State University of Denver as well as privately. Her study of J. S. Bach’s Clavier-Übung, Part III was awarded the Chancellor’s Dissertation Award in the Arts and Humanities by CU. Dr. Kull has served as Organist, Director of Music for churches throughout the U. S., notably as interim Director of Music and Organist at Saint John’s Cathedral, Denver, and was recently appointed Principal Organist at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Boulder.

An active performer, she has appeared in the Denver and Boulder Bach Festivals, and has published articles in The American Organist on Bach Performance, American Guild of Organists (AGO) certification and pedagogical topics. She holds the Fellowship and Choir Master certificates from the AGO. From 2003-2014, Dr. Kull served the national AGO, first as a member of the Committee on Professional Certification, then Director (from 2005). In 2008, she was elected to the first of three two-year terms as National Councillor for Education, serving on the National Council, the Executive Committee, and supervising the work of four national education committees. Touched by the needs of certification candidates with no access to training, she became intensely interested in online learning, and in 2014 organized the Task Force on Instructional Videos for Organists, a group becoming ever more visible on the AGO web site and You Tube station. She continues on the AGO Board of Examiners. She has taught at four Pipe Organ Encounters, organ camps for young musicians 13-18, and presented workshops for youth on practicing. She is also a member of the Anglican Association of Musicians (AAM).

CarolynBakerThe Contemplative Beehive is sponsoring A Residential Retreat on Thursday evening May 11 through Sunday morning May 14 at the beautiful Abbey of St Walburga.  The guest speaker will be Carolyn Baker Ph.D.   Carolyn is a former psychotherapist, and a professor of psychology and history.  She is a life coach and spiritual consultant for people who want to live more resiliently. She has published 10 books including Return to Joy with Andrew Harvey. 

This retreat is designed to underscore joy as the ultimate nature of reality. We will learn how to consciously cultivate joy. The topic of sacred activism, the union of activism and spirituality, will also be explored. Through journaling, group and individual practices, storytelling, contemplation, we will strengthen our connection with the sacred, each other, and nature.

Grocery Card program to be re-launched at St John's!grocerycard

Some terrific parishioners have been supporting St John's when they shop for groceries at King Soopers and Safeway, by using special grocery cards. We last offered these cards five years ago and are delighted to let you know we are gearing up for a second wave promotion! Would you like your favorite participating grocery store to donate a portion of your grocery bill to your church? If so, please watch for announcements concerning the re-launch of our grocery card program. Several parishioners are presently working to purchase $5 pre-loaded grocery cards from King Soopers, Safeway, and Lucky's Market. We hope to offer these at cost to you on Sundays beginning in April. You take the card to your favorite participating grocery store, pre-load it with money (using cash, check -- where accepted, or credit card) and then when you shop and use this card to pay for your groceries, the store donates a portion of your expenditure to the church.

Help Colorado Stay Gun Safe: Join our Rapid Response NetworkGun violence photo

With a new State House of Representatives and a new State Senate preparing to convene for the 2017 session in early January, we are developing a list of parishioners who are interested in being part of our Congregation’s Rapid Response Network. This network would be activated as significant bills are introduced that relate to guns. Talking points will be provided and you will be asked to contact either your legislator or members of the committee hearing the bill by letter, phone, e-mail or in person. We will also use this mailing list to keep you informed of events and activities dealing with this issue that we think you will find of interest.

SchoolWhittier Pantry at St. John’s

St. John’s Whittier Pantry is off to a good start with the donations we have received so far. Thank You!! Keep them coming (Deodorant, Bar Soap, Feminine Supplies, Toothpaste, Toilet paper, Kleenex, Diapers).   We are now serving 25 families.

Please keep the Pantry in mind year round. Here are some ideas:

  • When you are shopping pick up items you find on sale that the Pantry could use.
  • When you travel, bring home the toiletries items from your hotel.
  • Invite your children to pick out a bar of soap, or a children’s toothbrush for another family.

Deacon Jan will fine-tune what the Pantry stocks as we go along, according to the needs of the families we serve, and update you each month. Thank you for sharing your gifts in this personal way.
