/r/RoastMe gives me the heebie-jeebies.

The original idea of a 'roast' was that the person's friends (well, mostly friends) would make pointed jabs at the person but with good humor. It isn't supposed to be about being mean or "telling the truth" just to hurt someone's feelings.

In typical Reddit fashion, RoastMe is instead a sub for users to tear people down and apart. The comments tend to be nasty and mean-spirited and I have no idea why people ask for the abuse.

r/RoastMe is literally just encyclopedia dramatica the subreddit

Sure, if you think "you're a nigger" is comedy.

i mean, it's edgy as h*ck, but it leans into its own edginess so hard it becomes hilarious

Agreed. I'm personally a big fan of the article for puppies. So random.

What is this? 2005?

For hippie burnouts it's always 1967, the Summer of Love

For internet burnouts it's always 2005, the Summer of Hate

People are submitting their own pictures, so if they feel torn down, I have no sympathy for them. That might make me a dick, but how hard is it to look at some of the posts in that sub and figure out what to expect? They are literally asking for it.

Roasting people is meant to be a funny joke. Self depricating humor. It has to be funny. Telling someone they are insecure, their relationships are superficial, they expect to have everything handed to them... those aren't jokes. The top comment didn't have a single joke in it, it was just vitriol thrown by someone who is probably angry that they aren't attractive themselves.

I love r/roastme. I participate if I can think of something biting and funny. This whole comment section looks like it was infiltrated by sad, spiteful incels.

How is that within the spirit of r/roastme?

[–]SevenLightpm me your dicks pls [

It even says in the sub sidebar, it's meant to be humorous. You're meant to act like you're saying it for a crowd.

Idk if these guys would deliver a long, hateful, often kind of bigoted rant in front of a crowd - I mean maybe they would. But I feel like they're completely missing how it's supposed to come across.

[–]BunnyOppaiI don't know what I'm doing [

I'm pretty sure many people there fully expect to be "the exception" and get showered in compliments.

[–]525daysThat's exactly what a necrophilic paedophile would say! [

Yeah, then I definitely have zero sympathy for them.

Absolutely. Can guarantee she thought she was it.

how?

Yeah but common sense isn't that common. A good number of people fully expect to get nothing but compliments from that sub and will get angry when that doesn't happen. They know damn well that sub is about roasting people but they still believe they'll be the exception.

[–]riddle_me_this1 [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

A good number of people fully expect to get nothing but compliments from that sub and will get angry when that doesn't happen.

What? Even if that were true, other users don't have a responsibility to be gentle to this type of person.

So, how do you know it's a. them and be. that if not, the OP got their consent? The sub is fine with people commeting "sure, I asked" to "verifiy" the consent. It's wide open to abuse and I wouldn't be suprised if a large portion of the people roasted are unaware of their picture being used.

It is pretty terrible, but you can't really blame any of the commenters for their meanness since the OPs always know what they're getting into.

[–]postironyWarning: may create drama

I can blame them for being dumb enough not to understand what a roast is and mean enough to misconstrue it as throwing rotten fruit and jeering at someone in stocks, just like I can blame the submitters for putting themselves in said stocks.

Are we both talking about the same sub? The sub that says it's "okay" to post pictures of people who aren't them, as long as they ask for consent and people take a comment saying so for proof? Just look at this one. OP has posted multiple pics to that sub of people who he claims agreed to this. They could very well be from a non-english speaking country or not be able to know what's going on. The rules of that sub are vague on purpose and the outcome is as expected. It's a disgusting community.

[–]Old_Army90Spelling wasn't even standardized until recent history. [

They're Comedy Central roasts over Friars Club roasts. Both are meant to honor someone, but one has to be really edgy and malicious to stay relevant and try and keep their own fragile egos from falling apart.

[–]mizmooseCaptain Hyperbole Here To Save The Day [スコア非表示]  (1子コメント)

Yeah, but even Comedy Central roasts are mostly done by people who know the target.

[–]Old_Army90Spelling wasn't even standardized until recent history. [

Mostly.

I'm still kind of confused how The Situation ended up roasting Trump.

Meh, everyone who posts their pic on that subreddit knows exactly what they're in for. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

It's the Steven Crowder effect, in which bitter and angry people mistake mean-spirited and humorless mockery for comedy.

[–]Irenarchi prefer the term 'meat-impaired combatant' [

/r/RoastMe is such a boring, predictable sub. Clever or incisive roasting seems to get rarer by the day, and in its place is just a bunch of dudes trying to one-up themselves on how insulting they can be.

You could probably sum up 80% of the top comments on that sub as follows:

  • attractive woman: "narcissist attention whore daddy issues dumb slut"

  • unattractive woman: "you're fat and i wouldn't fuck you"

  • attractive man: "douchebag gay Chad"

  • unattractive man: "you look like a school shooter/rapist"

Slather with an unhealthy coating of teenage boy issues, to taste.

[–]JustTray(((ShariaBlue'sClues))) [

Reddit seems to be on a downward spiral, fueled by the worst trolls, to constantly one up itself on how much phony outrage and/or who can deliver the most 'edgy' content. It's like a game to see how far they can push the 'reddit rules' without being banned.

To make matters worse, the popularity of reddit has caused a huge influx of malicious advertising content disguised as news or viral stories which have made it hard to believe anything is genuine online anymore.

And sadly the Admins are both woefully incompetent and deliberately obtuse to the situation since their bottom line is impacted, so there is no solution in sight.

That being said, holy shit what a take down in those comments.

[–]out_stealing_horses"checkmate" i believe is the term in your children's party game

I got a whiff of desperate lardass from the top comment that mocked her for...going to the gym?

If you're going to tiredly claim that people age out of being pretty, fine, but I don't think mocking a man or woman for going to the gym really says much about them, but more about the way you view fitness solely as a conduit for attention.

[–]boom_shoesLikes his men like he likes his women; androgynous.

Oh man, it's totally the attitude of people that go to the gym once a month for two years in their early twenties. It's projection, plain and simple.

The majority of people I meet at the gym who are there day in, day out, have loftier goals than "looking fine".

Just to add to that, it's become lazy on both sides of the equation. 80% of the posts are just an attractive person from the shoulders up with the Roast Me paper. Those posts then get the blanket ugly/gay/daddy issues/creep comments, but everyone involved keeps getting more karma for it, so it's all devolved into a big ol' circle jerk of "free karma".

[–]bitterred/r/mildredditdrama [スコア非表示]  (6子コメント)

Her 'ex' commenting you will die alone is considered good faith?

Yes

whew. what a very fun subreddit they have over there.

[–]Draculix [

To clarify, it's good faith only in that we don't remove it. It's not a statement of support, just where we draw the line on getting involved and letting the subreddit police itself.

I don't want the moderation team to be a panel of judges removing anything we don't personally find funny, it's the downvote button's job to do that. Removing every comment that mentions dying alone would be an arbitrary rule that suppresses a lot of good jokes that could be written in the future.

[–]bitterred/r/mildredditdrama [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

I guess the point is mean spiritedness, so you can't really remove mean spiritedness.

[–]postironyWarning: may create drama

You'd prefer your sub to be an angry garbage fire of petty name calling masquerading as comedy? I thought I'd mosey on down there and have a quick look at the comments on some of your other top submissioms. Holy shit. Your users make Anthony Jesselnik look like Pope Francis. At least Shark Party was funny.

[–]PandemultGod knew what he was doing, buttholes are really nice. [

The subreddit was fucked from the start, roasting only works if you actually know the person (and are funny).

It was pretty damn mean tbh, it felt like it came from someone who was very bitter towards women.

I got a good laugh out of the replies that were basically linking /r/jesuschristreddit or /r/watchpeopledie. Something about that gave me a good chuckle.

[–]big_bearded_nerdIf you say "retard" one more time you'll win the argument.

To be fair, a good writer or a good comedian could do that as well, without having to be bitter towards women.

Edit: That being said, I think that you are spot on about the ex-boyfriend's comments. Holeeey shit.

It was pretty damn mean tbh, it felt like it came from someone who was very bitter towards women.

I feel like you're projecting here. It is a very obvious "go to" roast for an IG model. Like racism for a black guy or height for a short guy.

[–]itsactuallyobamaFuck neckbeards, but don't attack eczema

I don't think I'm projecting lol, but it is possible I don't know much about these roasts and how they work I guess. This is probably my second time of seeing that sub.

Likely your insecurity stems from always questioning if you really ever earned anything by merit.

This is an unjustified resentment that a lot of people in that thread have.

unjustified resentment

Uh, it's a roast based on a picture. How is anything anyone says justified?

They should at least try to be funny, not just being mean.

[–]beanfiddlerfree speech means never having to say you're sorry

It's a pretty good intuition though. When I was younger and hotter, I got a lot of the wrong kind of attention because I was very busty and bad at wearing shirts that fit correctly. It eventually wears on you, knowing that someone's friendly overture has an extremely high likelihood of turning into a come-on at an awkward time. Especially when they're people who masqueraded as friends for years or your boss or professor.

I know, woe is the plight of a hot girl. But I was a teenager, very shy, and going through a massive sexuality crisis. I didn't know how to deal with the attention.

For someone who likes attention because they're attracted to men and outgoing, I could see the "are they only nice because they want to see me on my knees" thing getting old, even despite liking some of the attention.

It's this weird gatekeeping assumption people have about women. Either we're supposed to welcome all attention, no matter our thoughts on it, or we have to dress like a nun and wear a chastity belt. No gray areas allowed.

[–]itsactuallyobamaFuck neckbeards, but don't attack eczema

Yeah they all seem really bitter towards pretty women, as if her being beautiful somehow immediately makes her vapid and useless.

Yeah obviously if you're a good-looking woman that means that even if you spend lots of time and energy on your social media because that's how you earn a living, you didn't really earn it

EDIT: Also, since I had happened to comment about Instagram models yesterday, I had a fair number of people dispense some distilled misogyny for me to read (the worst being a link to some website made solely to "expose" Instagram models)

She posted on the r/roastme subreddit asking to be roasted. Got roasted, then deleted her account. While I agree some of the comments were overly rude you can't say she shouldn't have expected anything less.
