Today we’re announcing a new version of Crowd, our single sign-on and identity management software. Crowd 1.1 contains a whole host of new features targeted at implementing OpenID, along with dozens of core updates to the Crowd Administration Console.

OpenID is currently a maturing technology with decent potential to become the standard mechanism for web authentication. The adoption for OpenID is really amazing considering current OpenID 2.0 specifications are still in “draft”. Once specs are finalized and libraries become solid, I think we can expect a lot of creative things to be built on top of the lightweight, flexible protocol.
The core value for Crowd remains that Sys Admins can easily manage all their user directories and application security through one interface — SSO through one intuitive interface. Atlassian Simplifies Web 2.0 Password Management with OpenID
New feature, CrowdID, authenticates users on Enterprise and Web 2.0 applications
San Francisco (Business Wire) June 26, 2007 — Atlassian today announced the release of Crowd 1.1 with support for OpenID, a popular framework that is quickly becoming the standard to help Internet users access the websites and online services they use most. Crowd is sign-on software (SSO) that authorizes users across web applications both behind and in front of a company firewall. Priced so any organisation can afford it, Crowd is available for a fully functional 30-day evaluation at www.atlassian.com/software/crowd.
Released earlier this year, Crowd 1.0 simplifies user sign-on and identity management by helping businesses manage authentication and authorization for multiple web applications. A powerful administration console makes it possible to manage directories, users and their security rights all within a unified security architecture. Crowd can be used in any IT environment.
Crowd’s new feature, known as CrowdID, uses the OpenID standard, a single sign-on protocol. It bridges an existing gap by connecting authenticated users between enterprise applications located behind a firewall with Web 2.0 applications outside the firewall. Users no longer have to remember a handful of different logins and passwords, despite utilising many different web applications and online accounts. Other single sign-on solutions either have OpenID services or behind-the-firewall user management. Crowd is one of the only commercial systems to have both.
