Rivals South Sydney Rabbitohs and Manly Sea Eagles kick off Friday night footy when they meet at Allianz Stadium in a key clash.
Both these clubs have a history of some memorable battles over the years. It was the 1970 grand final between these two clubs which saw South Sydney captain John Sattler break his jaw in the opening minutes then play through the entire game.
The rivalry still continues today and both sides will be looking to step up a gear to gain the upper hand – particularly Manly, who will be bidding to avenge a 20-point loss in Round 2.
South Sydney would sooner forget their last round loss to the Brisbane Broncos with all the controversy surrounding it. They appeared to cop the rough end of the stick in all 50/50 calls and even had Referee’s boss Tony Archer admitting one Broncos try should not have been awarded.
Meanwhile the Sea Eagles were more fortunate as they grabbed a rare golden point victory against the Raiders in Canberra. After appearing to be heading for a loss, they managed to force an extra time showdown in the final minutes of the match. Then Dylan Walker kicked them to victory, landing a penalty goal to secure the two point win.
The Rabbitohs have a strengthened side this week with the return of halfback and playmaker Adam Reynolds after recovering from injury. They do, however, lose a little strength in the forward pack with George Burgess suspended for the next four weeks.
The Sea Eagles are bonding better each week as they continue to work on their new look line-up. Five-eight Blake Green is working well with his halves partner Daly Cherry-Evans and Dylan Walker is in outstanding form since returning to his favourite centre position.
History shows the Sea Eagles have a slight edge on the Rabbits with 75 wins to 64, however, Souths have won five of the past seven matches.
It’s hard to picture what might happen in this game, given the uncertainty both teams have shown this year. One thing that does stand out here is that Manly boast a 3-0 away games record and in a close game they can keep that unbeaten road record in tact.
