_Nickel and Dimed_ did for me pretty much what you hope books-about-being-poor would do for people at large. It is intellectualized rather than tearjerking, and about voluntary rather than inherited poverty, leaving predictable angles of attack for those concerned with purity, but IMO it is a candidate.

I read that too and it was really good. Then I made the mistake of looking for commentary about it online, and found various people who tried the same experiment with opposite results, and everyone telling everyone else they were doing it wrong or spinning it dishonestly or whatever.

Man, I don’t know. I think during that scene I was thinking that I would leave without the watch, then have a friend get it a few weeks later and mail it to me. I know that’s a cop-out answer, but cop-out answers are all I’ve got.

But if I did, I definitely wouldn’t stay around to make Pop-Tarts.

I’m not sure how serious you’re being, and my guess is the government hasn’t actually banned this. But if they did, it would be because the quickest way to do this would probably be with brain electrodes, and once people get brain electrodes they can wirehead, and what’s the point of fighting the War on Drugs if you can just wirehead directly?

The doctor thought I took it too often so prescribed Daily Preventative That Might Take Several Weeks To Start Working, which I started taking several weeks ago. I still log my doses of Fast Acting Symptom Reliever. What statistic do you suggest calculating for testing the hypothesis that the daily medicine reduces the number of doses I take of the symptom-reliever?

I can’t do anything fancy, so I vote for just seeing if you took Fast Acting Symptom Reliever less in the three month period after you started Daily Preventative than the three month period before.

I didn’t define them that way, I just explained that that’s the accepted definition. As you point out, autism is an edge case.

The studies show that the death spike is the same in northerly cold latitudes vs. southerly warm latitudes, so probably not.

I’m not really sure what scale you’re thinking on. If you can’t stop thinking about it and it’s ruining your life, it’s possible you have obsessive-compulsive disorder. If it’s just an ordinary worry, then I would do whatever you have to to dispel the worry - eg ask trustworthy friends to confirm that your perceptions are real.

You can try seeing a psychiatrist, but be very careful you get a good one who listens to you, or they might just overinterpret whatever you say and throw antipsychotic drugs at you.

Yes, but make sure they take your insurance first. You can also just call your insurance and ask them which psychiatrists in the area they work with and recommend.

I didn’t know all drugs were OTC in Mexico (is this true?)

I have complicated thoughts on this, but I don’t think 100% OTC drugs and freedom of TV drug advertising can coexist peacefully.

(and I agree with commenters mentioning antibiotics and addictive substances as likely exceptions)
