You shouldn't be worried about it. They probably assumed your friend is male and used gender "neutral" term. That would be my assumption.

It is pretty standard to hear "hey guys" for any group of people. When I worked in food service I made a special point to always say "hi ladies" to a group of all women and "hi folks" to any other group. Screw conforming.

This week i was driving 2 friends around.

Friend 1 refered to the both of us as "guys"

Friend 2 said "you mean guy and girl"

Friend 1 responded that he ment it in general, but was glad to change it to something more gender neutral... so changed it to "bitches"

I laughed and was amused and happy with both of em ;)

I get that a lot, and also being called dude. But other women around me call each other guys and dude too.

It's one of those things that feminists, the actual feminists rather than the screaming banshees you can sometimes see, fight against: the casual sexism that nobody pays attention to unless it hits them.

A lot of stuff assumes that men are either “better” or “the default gender”. This “Hey guys” thing is an example of the latter. It doesn't necessarily mean that they perceived you as male, it might just as well simply mean that they used the “default” expression.

I mean, idk about english, but in french when a group contains female and male nouns, the adjectives turn male as well, it's just a language rule.

I don't see any problem with that.

I think you kind of missed the point there. I wasn't saying that I have a problem with it either, what I was doing was replying to someone who presumed that the saying was used due to them being perceived as men and explaining that it could simply be people just using it as some kind of default statement.

If you didn't miss the point then you explained yourself a bit weirdly, I think.

Guys is gender neutral. After all, no one uses the term gals anymore.
