Should we give 3-5-2 another go? (self.reddevils)

I know this formation is disliked by the majority of United fans but I feel like we actually have a squad that would play better in a 3-5-2 rather than the 4231/433/451 variations we use currently.

Shaw and Valencia would make great wing backs, with Blind, Darmian, Young and even Lingard filling it. Jones, Rojo and Bailly all can play the ball out of the back, Smalling can't but that's okay until we get a new CB.Pogba and Herrera as two all action box-to-box midfielders would have added cover of our wing backs on the sides and an extra defender in the back. We would have width which we don't have know as we don't have any natural wingers. Rash/Martial could play up with Ibra with Mata/Mkhi running the show behind them in their natural positions. Ibra would be able to drop back like he does but we'd still have another striker up with him so he could do that.

I just feel right now we are trying to fit square pegs into round holes, using strikers and central attacking midfielders as wingers when we have full backs who with the added protection of an extra CB would be able bomb forward more and have less defensive responsibility.

What do you think? Maybe LVG had the right idea, albeit a terrible execution with wrong players.

We played 3-4-3 like a month ago for 2-3 matches, I think we're gonna do that tomorrow to deal with Chelsea's. (I know it's not the same)

We might but why can't we try to experiment with it, commit to it in the next few PL games since we have very little chance of being in the top 4 anyway. Every time we've done it, it was kinda half-assed. It's a system that could work against the smaller teams too. Seem counter intuitive to have technically more defenders against a smaller team but we really wouldn't. We would have fewer actual defenders and more attacking players.

I don't think Mourinho will want to throw away even the small chance we have of getting in the top 4, just for experimentation.

What do we have to lose now? Another 1-1 or 0-0 draw? Obviously what we are doing is not working. We are so narrow and so static, easy to defend against.

Third CB will be a big issue if we do try that.

He'd probably end up playing Blind at CB with Bailly and Rojo

Considering Mourinho doesn't seem to like playing blind at CB I'd say it'd be back 4. Especially considering they wouldn't have had the time to train in that formation after the Thursday match.

Which would be fine, Blind would have great distribution out of the back and could play a little forward even as en extremely deep Lying midfielder if the opposing team has just one player up front.

We pretty much play an unbalanced 3 at the back most games anyway with Valencia playing on the wing and our left back being Blind or Darmian, who stay back a little more. Or if Shaw is at LB, we had conservative Darmian at RB

It would be this season but if we would commit to this formation, we could pick up a CB or two in the summer or give one of our young CBs a run there in the cups. For now, Blind or even Carrick could fill in as the 3rd CB. They both played in a back 4 before.

Yeah you are correct about Valencia Shaw, they will be able to help out the forwards to big effect if we play this formation
