Eugen @Gargron

@pixiv Hey! I hope you realize this is not personal. In the west, loli content is not acceptable in most places. Do you intend to moderate it in the future, or will you keep allowing it on your instance?

@Gargron @pixiv I assume they'll keep allowing it since it's a major part of anime culture over there. Even though it's also controversial over there.

@gargron @pixiv
You shouldn't waste your time trying to police the content. Freedom of speech should be a major asset of Mastodon, compared to Twitter. You are not accountable for what people post anyway.

@Nicra I wouldn't characterise this as a freedom of speech issue. The content in question is illegal in some jurisdictions.

Not only that, but because Mastodon instances can be moderated then the Admin of the instance can be held liable for the content.

This isn't a case of "I'm not federating with you because I don't like what you say", this is a case of "If I federate with you and this sort of content is being shared I can get in serious shit"

@troubleMoney It belongs to specialists (lawyers/judges) to discuss & decide those issues in every jurisdiction. Web developpers arent liable for the behavior of those who use their tools, no more than BMW will be held accountable if I use their car as a weapon. #Mastodon isnt a malware. The admin of an instance may get into trouble with the law, but this is none of @Gargron’s concern. No one is supposed to be conversant with the law of 150+ countries. #FreeSpeech #JustMyOpinion

@Nicra You know he took the decision to not federate between mastodon.social and pawoo.net as the admin of mastodon.social right?

This wasn't a decree from on high from the developer, this was in his role as an admin of an instance.

@troubleMoney No, I didn't know. But I hope other admins will act differently. This is like playing "god" in my opinion (and introducing too much politics in his administration). He is being too serious about his "social responsability". Everyone should be allowed to decide for himself what kind of content he wants to be "exposed" to. Hopefully, Mastodon allows users to bypass admins who feel overresponsible for their users. :) @gargron #FreeSpeech

@Nicra That's basically the point of the decentralised nature of Mastodon, if you disagree with the decisions of one instance admin then you're free to either start up your own instance or find a different instance that more closely aligns to your views.

@troubleMoney Yes. We just need a clear description of the policy of every instance, so that we don't need to move several times before finding our "home" (for those of us who want to post controversial content )

@troubleMoney @Gargron shouldn’t think of himself as a kind of father-like or god-like figure presiding over every aspect of the universe he created (no offense meant). Let the police do the policing (if they can 😊)

@Nicra @Gargron @pixiv Looks like you have little idea what Mastodon is about

@Gargron I saw some borderline (in the Western culture) content on their own Twitter account, so I guess their answer will be they want to keep it

@Gargron @pixiv A very mature response to a complicated legal problem.

@skiboy941 I'm not sure if you are being sarcastic?

@Gargron I'm not being sarcastic. While I'm of the mindset that banning a drawing, regardless of how objectionable the content, is ridiculous, it does put server operators in various countries at risk. I'm glad to see that you are handling this issue well.

@Gargron Anyway, there are various technical routes to choose with regards to how this could be solved, most of which are suggested on Github now. A lot of them sound like equally valuable and viable options. Choose whichever you find most appropriate.

@Gargron @pixiv since I'm not sure if you can actually read the replies from over on pawoo here is what I wrote "I think feeding specific tags into the content warning system which then can be blocked by other instances could easily "fix" this problem without actively denying people to create things legal in japan you just need to get people to properly tag this lol"

@Gargron @pixiv thank you for FINALLY addressing this. I wish @TheAdmin would do the same on .cloud just gotta avoid the federated and local for now, sticking to home only.

@Gargron @pixiv Make sure somebody is online to moderate. In most places you have to act when attended to problems...
Maybe you can add a "this media is bad" button that sends it to the moderator.

@Gargron @pixiv

Jumping in... Didn't see the images in question, but if they are what I'm thinking they are based on the conversation, I'd ask they be called what they are (child sex abuse images).

And if that's what they were they should not only be moderated but reported - by anyone who saw them. If not because of mandatory reporting laws then because it's the moral, ethical and human thing to do.

Silence causes real harm to real people.

@Tdorey The images in question were 2D drawings. The problem is that they are legal in Japan, so Pixiv is in their right to host them, but they are culturally unacceptable and borderline/illegal in many other countries
