“Hi Tyler, I recently found your blog, Marginal Revolution. It has a lot of interesting things about economics. But, why is the comment section so terrible? It’s full trolls constantly taking swings at each other, that make no sense to anyone else. That, and it’s full of far-right people, which doesn’t really match the theme of the blog. I get that a comment section does not represent the blog owner(s), but yours is unusually bad. I will read an interesting blog post, open the comments and be disappointed every time.”
And yet at the same time the comments are the second-most important reason I read MR every day (Tyler’s posts being the most important reason). Yes there’s a ton of trolling and idiocy, but that is true of the rest of the internet. (Including much of reddit, so it’s rather ironic to see a reddit commenter complaining about the comments at MR.)
And there’s more good stuff in the comments here than on most of the rest of the internet, interspersed with the garbage.
P.S. I only glanced at Tyler’s AMA, but I most liked his statement that he differs from Megan McArdle because she likes to bake pies.
I tend to disagree with much of Mark Bittman’s advice and attitudes, but his anti-pie diatribe was eye-opening to me, something that I’d instinctively believed deep inside but hadn’t explicitly realized until Bittman pointed out that pies are an inherently dumb idea. Pie crust is plain and boring. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/11/magazine/mark-bittman-bye-bye-american-pie.html
Doing a reddit? :O
I think you mean “doing a Reddit AMA”.
You should have done one on /r/badeconomics like Noah Smith did recently.
If it was Noah Smith, he would get into a fight on Twitter and then block you when you proposed a way to resolve the conflict.
I thought that was called pulling a Nassim Taleb
But not in the way that Debbie did Dallas, I trust.
From the Reddit, for us commenters to ponder:

Tyler’s answer:
“Maybe blogs get the comments sections they deserve! I apologize for that, it can be horrendous. Maybe a lot of human beings just aren’t that good.”
Savage. But not exactly incorrect, I think.
Hold it… I’ve raised the bar in the comments section by many, many micrometers. That’s the thanks I get?
Heh, yup.

Tyler,
Nice job keeping up with the flow of questions and dealing out decent replies. It did look easy.
Mobile dang it.
Should have been you made it look easy.
I’m flabbergasted. No one asked if he knew who prior was? Seriously????
