Afghanistan officials say 36 ISIS fighters were killed in the Thursday bombing. The 21,000-pound GBU-43B, or massive ordnance air blast weapon, unleashed 11 tons of explosives.
U.S. officials say the strike in the Achin district of the Nangarhar Province using the "mother of all bombs" was "designed to minimize the risk to Afghan and U.S. forces conducting clearing operations in the area." It targeted ISIS-K fighters, also known as the Khorasan group.
