Is that a gambling site? Because putting 16BTC of yours in an account that you don't control seems like a pretty huge gamble that you took.

If I ran a gambling site and someone sent me 16 BTC I would disappear too

16 btc is small change for those people (i think)

$20K is $20k

Running away with $20k is like running away with a carrot in terms of your whole life.

You think he ONLY stole OP's bitcoins?

The guy probably ran away with 10 times that amount maybe more

Maybe if you live in the US but I can think of many countries where $20k would put you in the 1%

The domain registery info is public, so that's a start to finding them.

They used fake details for the domain registry. The "company" behind the domain is Polimedia which is currently in "Forfeited Existence" in Texas. The registry info has been the same even before they switched owners a year ago.

Could be, but I just took a look at the email which seems to be real as it's been in 6 data breaches.. One of them being BitcoinTalk were he's promoted his site under the username 'bitbet-info'.

If I understand correctly, kakobrekla was the operator:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=11998

He's also on #bitcoin-otc, you can ask there.

Also on #bitcoin-assets, but that place is very toxic. People on #bitcoin-assets probably have info about bitbet.us, but they aren't quite sane, so be careful.

Why did you leave 16BTC in a bet site?

Was his choice. Why do people spend money on expensive cars, houses, wife's eteceta. Your reaction is off topic and childish.

Your reaction is off topic and childish.

No it's fully on topic. Never did I say I had any issue with his choice to gamble. Leaving such a large sum of BTC on a wallet you don't own however is an extremely foolish decision and extremely pertinent to this sub. Your interpretation of my comment is childish.

Motivations are irrelevant to being scammed.

That being said, the site had been around since 2013 and I had about 140% ROI in that time.

The "bets" were actually just prediction markets with plenty of inefficiency. At any given time I had as much as 40btc on there. Thankfully I wasn't scammed for that much, but the site seemed pretty reliable since they had handled such an enormous volume.

Fwiw, if they had been planning an exit scam they could've had about 200 more btc (iirc) if they had run before the election, which they paid out.

This doesn't seem like it was a scam planned until very recently, if that the case.

Gambling with bitcoin is a lose lose scenario Just throwing money away and as time goes by the loss doesn't fade .

It gets amplified

I stopped trusting them after they switched owners

Agree, for all the bad rep Mircea Popescu gets (trolling, narcissist and an asshole in general), his websites are trustworthy, never been hacked and works.

Once the site changed owners, I stopped using bitbet immediately, since I don't know shit about the new owners, and have no reason to trust them.

Same thing with mtgox really, once they got hacked, I stopped using them, and avoided the really bad shit later. Basically I view Bitcoin sites as the ceremonial horse. As long as you don't ever mess up badly (eg. coinbase/bitstamp/btc-e), I will keep using it. If you mess up even once, I'm never using you again.

Bitstamp never messed up? Wasn't it hacked in July 2015?

Yes, but I would consider it as a minor hack, also it wasn't really a weakness in their security, but a social engineering led into compromised server. Their security actually worked, they only lost what was in the hot wallet, this is pretty good considering their actual servers were compromised. Overall, bitstamp handled the situation very well.

The first mtgox hack was especially bad, because it actually crashed the Bitcoin price to less than $0.01, and was able to circumvent their security and withdraw coins. This was all done thru their website, without even hacking their server. Then mtgox had to rollback trades. That was when I lost faith in the mtgox management.

I have several emails from the BitBet team last month. They seemed kinda active -- I'm surprised to see this.

Downtime with no explanation is shitty, and definitely suspicious. I hope they come back online soon.

I don't think it's a confirmed goxing... yet.

Definitely not good though.

You'd have thought if they wanted to exit scam it would have been right before the US election payouts were due... but they paid that out.

Have a bitcoin address? Let's see if the funds have moved.

I looked at my deposit address and no funds have moved. I strongly doubt it is an intentional scam. But perhaps the owner died or got arrested. Anyways, it's the same result: lost bitcoins.

That's why we should have smart contracts for online betting. All we need to do to have smart contracts is SegWit...
