This is what thumbs up was invented for. Or even an OK sign if you're feeling fancy.

Also, make sure to ask as soon as the patron took a bite, funny to see them start chewing rabidly and swallow whole chunks in order to answer and avoid the cringe.

I try not to do it on purpose, but whenever it happens I make a joke about it with the customers.

Given enough enthusiasm, a fork is an adequate substitute for a thumb in a "thumbs up"

Given too much enthusiasm, a fork is an unfortunate substitute for a knife in an easily misunderstood situation

As long as you wait at least 5 minutes after serving.

Had waiters ask me as I was like 2 bites in. I don't fucking know man, I haven't had a chance to eat, leave me be.

We can't wait that long without managers being down our throats about it, most places have a policy to check back within two minutes.

If there's an issue, we can find it pretty quick and solve it quicker.

And if we wait a while, some folk will claim there's something wrong when there isn't in order to get free shit because they're twats.

Have you ever thought of standing up to your manager?

As someone above said, it depends on if it's really busy or not as to whether we can get away with it, but it's brand standard. The managers are there to make sure everything is running smoothly, to make money, and to uphold the brand standard.

I got told off for carrying a glass of water to a table without using a tray because it wasn't brand standard, and in the time it took to grab a tray from the bar I could have dropped off the glass of water.

This was the rule when I worked at lubys. We had to watch you eat no more than two bites and ask you. The managers sat and watched the cameras in the office to make sure we did.

The waiters have to ask. If they don't, then some clever customers eat half (or all) the food and then claim there was something wrong with it in order to get something for free.

woah can people actually do that

Yeah my point is wouldnt it make it obvious its a lie to the waiter/chef? Isnt there some policy where u have to let someone know theres something wrong with it before u eat like half of it?

The types of people that do it aren't the type of people a waiter wants to get into it with(nor does the restaurant want them to). In that situation, a manager is usually brought in. Depending on how busy it is, and how much of a spine the manager feels like having at that point, will decide the outcome.

There's nothing actually wrong with it, they just say so in order to get free stuff. Unfortunately quite common.

Most restaurants have a rule called '2-minute check back' to make sure everything is cooked properly and that the customer doesn't need anything extra. It annoys servers, too, because they know it's annoying, but ya know, da rules.

[–]Scottish__BeefWest Coast TID 0

I was a waiter years ago and one time I was told to go check a table I had literally just served. I knew they were sitting there chatting and hadn't touched it yet, so I told my manager as such. I got told never to question him and go check the table. Funnily enough they told me to come back once they'd actually had a chance to try the food...

we used to have it as a major point on our mystery guests that we had every single month.

you got an extra £50 in your paycheck if the pub got 100% (which is doable) on the guest, £75 two in a row and £100 three in a row and 4,5 etc.

was an incentive but it was so awkward when its just pub food and if something was wrong you would be told before you got a chance to check back.

I second this. Ill wave you down if there is an issue or i need something, but dont come askin me questions while my mouths full from my first bite. And ill never feel "rushed" if you bring me my check asap, i know im tipping more than fair so im taking me sweet time anyway.

If I ask for the bill, I want the bill now. It is up to me when I ask for the bill.

Yeah but the time they need more napkins or whatever and you don't check, that's all the manager will remember

From now on when that happens, I will ask if it's company policy. Then I will ask for the manager and inform him it's a shitty company policy and then I will give my waiter a nice tip on the spot for having to put up with such a shitty company policy. Hopefully if enough people do that it will send a message.

I worked for a couple of big chains back in the day. It was a part of the training (brand standards).

If it was busy you could get away with it, but if it was quite dead, often the manager would pick up if you didn't do it.

The problem is, on an individual basis, you can tell some people don't want to be bothered and just want to eat their food. 'Brand standards' didn't take into account the initiative of the server. You had to do the check back regardless.

Another really annoying policy, when the customer asked for the receipt - we had to get the receipt to them within 30 seconds. Absolutely mental when some people want to finish their coffees/drinks and chill the fuck out after their food. From my point of view it would cringe me out having to give them the bill straight away - like we were trying to rush them out or after their payment for tips.

To be fair, don't people only ask for the bill when they want it?

100% correct but when you clear people's plates you have to ask if they would like anything else. Then people will generally say, "just bring the bill when you're ready".

That's fine but the chain I was at wanted that bill on the table within 30 seconds lol.

Brand standards are fine but initiative goes a long way if you have a capable server on your hands.

I would definitely go to a restaurant more if they did that. I've never encounter it, but I really appreciate having my check as soon as possible. It's not like you can't replace it if I decide I want something else.

I always tell them they can bring the check as soon as they are ready. We order our shit up front and do not buy desserts or alcohol so no surprises after. Works 100% of the time so far, as soon as I want to jet I already have the bill and usually I've already paid (and tipped).

This is a thing I'm totally okay with. If want to loiter, I won't say anything and the waiter will bring the check eventually. But if I've actually asked for a check, it's because I'm ready to get the hell out.

I've been to places where I've asked for a check and it takes them like 5 minutes to get around to bringing it to me. Pretty annoying if I'm on my way to a movie after or have to get back to work or something.

From the restaurant's standpoint, getting me out the door is probably a good thing too. Lets them give my table to someone else if it's busy.

It depends on the manager. At some places/when it is slow, they don't give you the check UNTIL you ask, so you can end up chatting at a table doing nothing for like 45minutes. Other places they give you the bill and wait. If it is busy they do sort of try to rush you out, which makes sense.

One of the most annoying things I experience at restaurants is not being able to pay and leave sometimes. I've had sisters disappear on me or just be super busy and not be around for a long time so I can get there check and pay. I've waited over a half hour after I wanted to leave before, with kids that were getting increasingly restless and grumpy, and that was one of only two or three times in my life I have left a shitty tip. I really appreciate it when servers give me the check early. It's easy for them to just make it clear they're giving it for the diner's convenience and they should feel free to stay as long as they want or let the server know if they want anything else.

I agree. At that point, I just stand up, put my jacket on and go to the bar or go find a waitress and tell them I want to pay.

I can understand the 30 second policy more; I wish more places around here had that. I will usually ask for the bill when I want to leave and the last thing I want to do is wait an extra 10 minutes because the server stopped at another table to take their order while I wait for my receipt. I am not upset by any means if that happens, but I would personally love getting my receipt/check within 30 seconds of request.

Are you from UK I'll PM you the chain if so.

My point is there is no room for the server to decide if they casually requested the bill or if they are rushing to get off out.

but if it was quite dead, often the manager would pick up if you didn't do it.

Did they pick you up on it, or did they just not want you standing around talking to each other? Just look busy.

If you got time to lean you got time to cl- "oh fuck off. I just made 150 steaks, 120 chickens, and 75 fish!"

to be fair though, I'd rather make sure everything is ok before everyone else is halfway done their food. that way I can fix it and you won't be waiting and watching everyone else finish before you get your food back.

Yeah that's the point of the check back, but you have to do it with every table regardless.

Often it just isn't necessary. And like OPs post says, half the time people just want to be left to their scran lol.

Hopefully. So far it's just you out there, fighting the good fight.

I figured something like that was the reason but as you could imagine because I'm sure it happens to you too, a waiter constantly bothering you whilst eating can be really annoying.

Oh yeah. I'm basically just there for taking orders and giving refills. The less time I spend talking to my customers, the higher my tips are. But if my manager decides to come out of the office for the day, I've gotta annoy the shit out of everyone.

I actually like the server coming over after the first bites of food and checking in . If something is wrong I can deal with it right there quickly . If everything's okay, it at least appears you, waiter, actually gives a shot even though I know its just protocol.

Not only does that annoy me, but then the manager comes to ask how my food is. And some sub-manager comes as well. And then the waiter double checks. So I get asked 4 times how my food is. AAAAAAAHHHHH

I serve as well, and I actually think my tips are usually +20% if I check in within 4 minutes to make sure the food does taste good and it is how they preffered their dish (steak temperatures, etc.). My managers don't really enforce it, more so that it's just an extra step of service. Also, it gives me a chance to hopefully keep selling alcohol or talk to them about wine pairings

Selling alcohol is my biggest reason to pester tables. Every drink is like $8< where I work, so if I've got a big top, I can easily add $100 to the ticket in just one round of drinks. It also totally depends on the mood and type of the people I'm serving if I'm gonna interact a lot with them. Group of college girls ordering margaritas and Bellinis? I'm gonna chat them up a shit ton and I'll get a better tip for it. Small group of older people drinking wine? I'm gonna leave them alone before they insult me; they never tip well and seem to hate the existence of servers.

TIL I'm a small group of older people drinking wine.

It's to prevent obvious problems like a severely over (Or under)cooked entree or to correct glaring issues that would reflect poorly on the restaurant like forgetting a side or some such. If a situation is fixed immediately rather than 15 minutes into the meal they won't have to comp anything. I get everyone's side and it's annoying to everyone involved but it's pretty important imo.

I hate eating out in the US, you have to tip some miserable prick, and they just constantly interrupt you.

Hey I'm not that miserable! I try not to interrupt people though. I'll just leave people alone most of the time unless they're trying to be chatty. And yeah tipping is stupid, but servers only get paid $2 an hour and rely on tips to make a living. It's a stupid system, but that's the way it works here sadly.

But if tipping wasn't a thing, then I wouldn't be a server. On a busy day, I'll be making $25+ an hour in tips and walking out with over $200, but on slow days I might leave with less than $30. It's hit or miss some days, but I consistently make enough to pay my bills and still have enough income (mostly untaxed) to spend on myself and my friends. It's not at all a long term job, but for a part time job while I'm in college, it's perfect :)

I am glad it works out for you. I still hate it.

Having waited tables for 10 years. Your waiters are trained to do this. It's to ensure the food isn't under/over cooked and/or that the food is what you actually ordered. A lot of people are shy about saying that the food isn't what they ordered at risk of offending the waiter when the food is initially played at the table. In the restaurant biz they call it the 2 minute check back, it's supposed to be just enough time for you to have a couple bites and make sure that the food is satisfactory.

There is a Korean BBQ place near my house that has a button you press to summon the waitress.

It's fucking heaven. They don't even acknowledge you till you press the button. And they will come as many times as you need them to with button presses. AND it makes a pleasant / silly little bing bong! noise.

Every fucking restaurant needs this feature. Get the fuck out of my face unless I need you. And when I do, you better fucking be there lickity god damn split. Give me great food, served efficiently, timely and piping hot and you'll have a great tip.

But for the love of god, FUCK OFF.

Live in Korea over here. Almost every restaurant has the buttons. It's the most efficient, period.

They do it on purpose so that you are less likely to actually request something of them. Instead you just nod to get them to go away so they don't have any extra work.

No we don't you lying cunt. A lot of places have company policy where it's 2 minute check backs otherwise you get moaned at by the manager.

Not if they're American. Tips are usually based on a percentage of the cost of the meal. More food, bigger tip

As a waiter, I can honestly say that we wait until your mouth is full. This way, you can't have time to moan before we are straight away dealing with another obnoxious customer.

You're in the service industry...

Sure. It might be called the service industry but I wonder how many people are duly rewarded for providing excellent or even good service. Bars and nice restaurants are one thing but for every one of those there is an Eat n Park where 90% of customers will complain about the ketchup being too spicy and tip to the nearest dollar just so they don't have to deal with the change. I can see why people wouldn't be motivated to provide 5-star service in that kind of gig.

You get paid. I work in a call centre and I get fuck all extra for "providing excellent service."

The vast majority of servers in the US (I know it's a Scottish subreddit but in my experience the "two bite check back" attitude is most prevalent in the US) don't get anything extra for providing excellent service either. Instead, they get less, or nothing, when the customer decides everything wasn't 100% perfect, on top of not having a regular paycheck to fall back on.

It's easy and pretty to think that most restaurant patrons will go above and beyond with their tip if they get good service, but that isn't how things typically work out in reality.

Doesn't mean anyone gives a shit about customers. It's just a job you count down the minutes with enough money to do the things you want to do and leave. Nobody takes pride in it lol

There are so many other entry level jobs you could take. Find one that you can take a shred of pride instead of being a lazy prick, taking a job you hate, and ruining every customer you interact with's day.

It's a tips based industry. My brother walks away with 300+ a night actually being a good server. Dudes nearly makes $40/hr bringing people stuff.

You're in a Scottish subreddit, mate.

We don't have your shite tip-driven culture, we just pay our staff a proper minimum wage.

May I kindly request that whichever developer releases a "Yes, it's good™" smartphone app for this problem please cut me a share of the profits.

Do you think it'll be able to compete with people putting their thumbs up for free?

Yes, because:

  1. Deluxe thumbs. $2.00
  2. Getting your smartphone out to answer the intrusive question is WAY more passive-aggressive. That's a unique selling point.

I would rather go and check on people's dinner after serving it to them 2 minutes after they go it. I worked at steak house and there have been times that a customer would eat their sides and then cut into the sides of the their steak. By the time they started to really cut into the center there was no way of telling whether I delivered them a steak as they specified or had it been cooked incorrectly. I covered my own ass so no cheapskate could tell me that the chef screwed up just so they could bitch and get a free meal.

I think there is a secret server code that demands they must wait till the customer has a mouth full before asking a question.

The complaints on this thread are the First Worldiest

Yes... Generally complaints represent your class... I also don't complain about how hard it is to catch goats or that my house is too big.

At least they ask. I'm a waiter, I don't give a fuck how your meal is, I get paid shit money to transfer it from the kitchen to you. I'm a human delivery vehicle

Texas Roadhouse. No...I do not want to cut into my steak.

This is me. I get so angry inside. It's a fire raging within. Sometimes I roll my eyes and slam my fork and knife on the table and shout "what!?" As I see the waiter approaching. I then top off my displeasure with a pointed stare.

Bastards. Bastards all of them.

You clearly have never worked in the hospitality industry, or have passed an English class.

We often say in the service industry, that every one should have to do it at some point in their lives. You learn the secrets to life in the industry. Also most of the people are pretty awesome from so many years of dealing with customers who hate the server trying to help them and/or the restaurant they are currently patronizing and/or their own lives

There's a bar and grill place in my town where they ask you "Is everything alright? Do you want something else?" about 5-6 time during your stay. Most overbearing restaurant I've been to.
