That is a hell of a lot of pointless tech to take on a fishing boat.

Gotta play those fishing games somehow.

[–]__PM_ME_YOUR_SOUL__ 2 ポイント3 ポイント  (0子コメント)

Exactly! I also love to play Lake Boat Simulator on my fishing trips.

I can't take my fucking 10 yo girl on a 10 minute ride to school without her begging to use my phone. A 3-hour fishing trip would drive her insane.

I'd recommend encouraging her to read if she doesn't already

I'd recommend letting her go insane

I'd recommend just letting her go free.

If it was meant to be, she will come back.

if she loves you, she will return. if she doesn't, she was never yours to begin with.

And if she doesn't come back, you dodged that whole parenthood bullet.

Then she can join the rest of us in civilized society.

Or ya know, fuckin fish.

Yea but, wearing a head camera, taking a picture of a fish with a phone, with a child holding a tablet and wires running all along the boat?

Maybe don't take the kid fishing if he doesn't want to go fishing, or force them to actually fish if you think that it is in their best interest to "get out" or some such.

There are no wires. Just rope

Ah so they have wireless out there.

Those are ropes. Pretty standard on a boat like that.

That sounds like it's your fault.

Yeah. It may seem easier to let your kid mindlessly browse your phone whenever they get annoying, but good luck getting them to do anything else ever.

This is the point a lot of people seem to be missing, they simply don't realize how damn dependent we've become towards our phone screens.

I went on a 10 day trip with no phone reception, the first 2 days I would mindlessly look at my phone and try to figure out things to do without internet. This is when I realized I was just using it to keep myself entertained while doing nothing.

I put it away and so did my other travel buddies, and we simply started to do more things, because suddenly just laying down doing nothing was extremely boring without our phones.

Parents who just give their 5 year olds a device they can be endlessly entertained with are just making them have extremely short attention spans.

Shame on you for allowing her to get that attached to technology already.

For what it's worth, i believe she is the only girl in her class that does not own her own phone.

Wow, she's the only one without a phone? Shame on you.

LOL.
I started noticing some of the other girls had phones at age 6, but those were kids of divorce, and it enabled parents to check up on the kid when they were with ex.
Then I started noticing other girls with phones, and when I asked the parents why, they claimed the bus was scary, or that the kid was sometimes latch-key.
Basically I think many of those parents were just weak.

lol, you just can't win in parenting, but you know what they say.

"Opinions are like assholes, everyone's got one."

"And they're all full of shit"

So what will she do if she gets lost or so? I mean, one thing to not want kids getting too attached to tech, and another thing them not having communications.

Then again, I survived without mobile phone during childhood, but damn, lots of stressfull situations of "Where the hell have you been/where are you/etc" could have been avoided.

Everyone here parent-shaming you for letting your kids use technology are likely not even parents yet...

Like, yeah good luck trying to not have your kids exposed to technology in fucking 2017. Even if you think you won't buy them an iPhone, iPod, iPad, iWhatever; they'll see their friends, family, and school using it and they'll beg you to buy them one every birthday and Christmas. And you'll eventually give in just so they can stop constantly bothering you with the "mum/dad, can I play games on your phone?" questions.

No kidding. For what it's worth.
1) Every girl in her class other than her owns her own phone.
2) Everyone replying is probably hopelessly addicted to screens, as evidenced by their own presence on Reddit.

I hope you aren't sweating these people. You don't need to justify your parenting style to us, either. You do you.

I see no reason why kids can't want a screen to keep from mindlessly staring out the window. I kinda get that a kid should be able to entertain themselves for 10 minutes in a car, but why? As long as they like to do other things, I don't see the problem with filling in the gaps where they are required by law to be strapped down in a seat with some electronic freedom.

Its the same with us (adults), while my wife is looking at things in a store and I am with her (if it is a thing I don't really have an interest in), having a phone to browse reddit is my saving grace from boredom, it also allows her to browse more since I don't become a whining cunt. I seriously fail to see the problem with this at all.

I'm a parent. I have 3 daughters ages 12-17. There are no screens used in our house until after dark or if it's raining. You make the rules if you're the parent, and stick with them. Your kids will follow them

So they can't study using their tablets or computers during the day?

I assume you also don't let them ride in automobiles or use indoor plumbing?

Ya, they are totally abused. They do lame shit like ride bikes and skateboards, help with dinner, do homework, read books, get good grades, practice their instruments, etc. What a bunch of losers

good luck trying to not have your kids exposed to technology in fucking 2017

I have 5 kids ranging from 3 to 10 years old. Each one seems to be more technologically advanced than the previous. My youngest daughter who just turned 3 a couple weeks ago has known how to start up a laptop, use the mouse to load Chrome, select the Netflix bookmark, pick the show she wants, and make it full screen, since at least last fall.

This. And- if these things were available when we were kids, we'd have been nagging/begging/whining/doing whatever it took to get one, too ... I had my consoles (Intellivision, Colecovision, then Nintendos) and computers (Commodore 64)... I'd have given ANYTHING to have them with me when we took vacations or went somewhere, ANYWHERE, out of the house.

I couldn't agree more. When I was a kid I spent tons of time playing videos games and dicking around on our computer (for many years before the internet was readily available). My focus was playing games, but that lead to learning a shitload about technology: hardware and troubleshooting software.

I also spent plenty of time playing outside and playing sports with friends.

Is it really so damning that my kids watch TV and play games on a tablet? I bet most of the people here had a gameboy growing up. Our kids are just like us except they have tons more technology floating around.

Lol, I didn't use a smartphone till I was 15 and didn't even get my own till I was 16. It's easy enough to not give your kids technology, just simply don't do it.

My kid just turned one. I'm not sure if its because she sees us on our phone and the remote control, but I'll be god damned if thats not all she wants.

She knows her toy phone and our phones are totally different, and I'm pretty sure has fucked my home button up because she keeps pushing it over and over again.

Its un fucking real to me how shes already wanting nothing but the damn phone.

My dad read so much that when I was growing up all I did was read, I see my parents now on their mobile devices and my kid brothers don't want to read, they just want to play because thats what they see their mom and dad doing.

My daughter was the same when she was 1. She knew her Fisher Price phone wasn't the same as mine.

I bought her a dummy shop display iPhone and that seemed to keep her happy.

I've got a ton of old phones that I just keep in current charge to placate her, but thats only as a last resort because I'm trying to keep this bullshit addiction away as long as possible.

Yeah man being over exposed to a phone is gonna give her cancer or something, how stupid are you?

What are you on about? Their child is obviously addicted to technology, as evidenced by their inability to go even 10 minutes without it. Whose fault could that possibly be, if not the parents'? It's like feeding your kid fast food all the time and getting them addicted to it.

Bingo.

I just said this in another comment but when I was growing up my dad would just read all the time, so I guess I got addicted to reading and even to this day I read every night.

Now though he and my step mom are on their mobile devices now so my kid brothers think thats what they do so they're on their mobile devices all the damn time.

Same thing with myself and video games, and man has that taken a long time to break myself of. I get that being a parent is hard, but dumping your kids off at the 1080p babysitter is just lazy and bad for them.

Yea another point is my kid who turned one years old today already knows the difference between her toy phone, and our phones. Shes worn out the home button on mine because she clicks it so fuckin much, and she will go out of her way to take it. She watches where I put it and then will try and go get it.

Shes one fucking years old, she doesn't even know what the fuck it is? I'm terrified of the future but we've already said we won't give her a mobile device just to pacify her and stick them in a corner for an hour or two face down.

That being said, she also sees me reading so much that if she can't find the phone she'll go for all the books in the area.

Extremely small sample size but at least I think its what they see YOU doing, that they'll want to do the same.

My 11 year old girl has flailed her whole cognitive life. I can't count how many times she's whacked passers by or knocked stuff off store shelves. No matter how many times I've told her to stop swinging her arms, she gets the 'I just kicked her puppy' look and an "okaaayyah".

I get the point of taking a small phone to take a picture of your fish, but an iPad? Seriously? I'm assuming the kid took it because he would get bored, in which case just don't take the kid at all if he won't enjoy it...

Just don't have kids in general

You say that, but you don't know. I don't have kids either, and I would like to think I wouldn't try and distract them with shit so I could enjoy myself, but really who knows.

but really who knows

Well... you do! :)

As long as you have the will and mettle to enforce sensible, clearly defined rules around devices then you won't have to deal with the zombification / 'inability to go without a glowing screen' problem.

99% of all kids will fall into whatever routine you lay out for them - inevitable fuss, tantrum times notwithstanding - so if you don't get complacent by foisting them off on some sort of passive entertainment or another you won't really have a problem. Just look around the next time you're eating out and observe the families where the adults and kids are all on various tiny screens instead of conversing... scary stuff. [Hmm, though I suppose all this little bit of advice is contingent upon being mentally present and interesting. :p]

Everything in moderation, as they say... if you're even half awake you can raise well-rounded children who you'll only occasionally have to mollify or distract with screen time when you're beat from a double shift or just want another round with the wife! In a healthy family there's a good ebb and flow of 'touching base' with mom + dad then making their own fun that kids go through.

I'd start to tell you about subtly directing kiddos toward demanding entertainment (stuff they'll benefit from and be truly engaged in / pursuant of) but that's another conversation altogether...

[–]chocolate_chip_kelly 3 ポイント4 ポイント  (1子コメント)

you have no idea what you would do if you had a child, lol.

"he's been crying for 40 minutes straight. give him the damn iPad"

"but..but..how i said i'd raise a kid before i had a kid!"

Or you can occupy their time by engaging them secrets to life

The real advice in this thread.

Kids are necessary for a future population. Everyone should have at least 2 kids, more to make up for those that don't have any.

I think it would help if you adjusted your perception. You don't know what their situation is and it's unfair to judge.

I have a friend with a non verbal autistic kid. He would love to go fishing and have a great time... But he uses an iPad to communicate by touching pictures of what he wants to say.

Don't get me wrong... I'm not defending them... In fact I agree with you... But only in the context of my own son. I just feel it's unfair to judge this/any family from your own perspective. They may not be in the same situation as you are and may have to make special accommodations for special circumstances that you know nothing about.

Could also be using it for the Kindle app. I liked spending time with my dad and fishing as a kid... But less than he did. After an hour where the biggest thing caught was the size of that fish, I was bored, so I brought books. Now, I can't even remember the last physical book I bought that wasn't for school.

Oh yeah completely, if the technology is brought along so that actual communication between a son and his father can take place then that makes perfect sense.

I was just going by the context of the gif, to me it seems as if the kid seemed rather bored to be on a boat, let alone interested in the fact that the cameraman had caught a fish.

It's always hard making assumptions of course when all there is to go by is a 10 second gif but I completely get where you're coming from.

[–]unnamed_elder_entity 4 ポイント5 ポイント  (0子コメント)

Maybe the fishing trip is just a clever cover to get rid of the kid's iPad?

When I was a kid I really didn't like fishing, but hanging out on the boat staring off into space was pretty rad. If I had been born more recently I could see myself wanting to take a 'toy' (iPad) with me.

Why doesn't the guy just grab an image off his head-camera when he gets back instead of using the phone.

At that point, just make them bring a book. If you're really hungry, you'll eat that dinner. If you're really bored, you'll read the book.

One could argue that just because you become a parent doesn't mean your life should change.
If the guy enjoys fishing and he's the only person that can watch the kid that day, make the kid go with him. There are way worse things you can do to a kid than have them be bored (in a safe location) for a few hours. I don't think this constitutes child abuse.

A tablet disposal unit.

It's a tablet holder with a wrist strap so you can use your tablet without having to grip it by the edge. It sits in the palm of your hand. The tablet is typically held by magnet, which is fine if you're using it properly... not so much if you're holding it vertically over a body of water and shaking it from side to side.

Only fish pictures I'd ever post are the big ones, because it was usually fun, or the little ones, because I think it's funny m

I miss the days when people bought flashy cars just beyond their price range to express their inability to cope with aging.

"Daaaad, I'm not going to drop it."

"You will, and you'll say "Sorry" but sorry won't bring it back."

"sploosh."

Reminds me of convos with my kid..

Dad, I'm sorry, I didn't try to..

Yes, but were you trying not to?

I should save these for potential future parenting...

Gotta foster that situational awareness whenever you can.

how did they film this?

Looks like the fish-holder was wearing a GoPro.

Remember those commercials where people were "accidentally" destroying their phones in funny ways so they could upgrade? Was that what this guy was going for here? Because I can't see why else you'd mix a kid, a small raft, and expensive electronics together like that.

20 bucks says that kid had a new one by the end of the week.

I think this is fake. He has a camera taking a picture of a fish while his some playing on his tablet on a fishing boat. That's either stupid or fake

Yeah looks like an advertisement to me. That or these people take their whole office on a fishing trip.

that look is the kid gauging whether or not he's about to get a beating --- we've all been there.

man, the comments are brutal

Which tablet holder is that? So I can not buy it.

Btw this shows a guy filming himself taking a picture of a fish while his son accidentally drops a tablet PC. Looks like an ad. Or people, who take an entire office onto a fishing trip.

This is probably one of the more toxic threads I've read in a while on reddit. The judgment is astounding.

[–]unnamed_elder_entity 0 ポイント1 ポイント  (0子コメント)

There's a lot of gear in that dinghy. They might have a big bag of rice too.

Man, children are so careless and destructive. We've basically decided we're not buying anything for several of our nephews because the shit doesn't last. We take them on trips and go to events instead.

Regardless of how stupid it is to just give your kid an iPad on a fishing trip, I think these two are very new to fishing. All of the visible gear still has stickers on it. The boat looks like it had never been used before (no muddy footprints in the bottom), the white rope is still clean and has kinks from being folded....

Or maybe my gear is just old and dirty. Anyhow, maybe they didn't know they were fishing wrong. Kid needs a pole, dad needs a beer, and although you can take a picture of your catch, you use a net and not your hand.

Serves you right you stupid kid. Why are you bringing an iPad on a boat? Anytime I'm near water my phone is safely in my pocket or a bag. I would never just wave it over the water like that

This guy is more concerned with looking like he took his son fishing than actually fishing.

What the fuck is this high tech bullshit, he got a camera always on and strapped to his forehead when he goes fishing? Why even take a photo with the phone then? I'm happy the kid dropped the pad at this point

Edit: huh. It's a thing. A dead thing like the little shit in this gif, but a thing nonetheless.

Fishing i supposed to be a reason to get away from that stuff.

Also, that's a super small perch to even bother taking a picture of it. lol

Why is that kid doing that to the iPad?

Why was he taking a picture if he was recording the trip???
