I hate this guy just as much as you do but keep in mind that calls to violence/witchhunting/general uncivil comments are not allowed on r/Drugs and will be removed no matter who they support/oppose.

Be better than the people you hate.

Wikipedia:

Sessions is against legalizing marijuana for either recreational or medicinal use. "I'm a big fan of the DEA", he said during a hearing with the Senate Judiciary Committee. Sessions was "heartbroken" and found "it beyond comprehension" when President Obama said that cannabis is not as dangerous as alcohol. In April 2016, he said that it was important to foster "knowledge that this drug is dangerous, you cannot play with it, it is not funny, it's not something to laugh about ... and to send that message with clarity that good people don't smoke marijuana".

This would be easy and comforting to believe, but really a lot of people find the idea of any mind altering or soothing substance is immoral. It's a lot of the way that people sort of subtly look down on people who take antidepressants or have therapists. Those get a bit more of a pass because theu have become associated with medical practice, but people like Sessions and "real men" still judge others who use themThey don't count alcohol only because it is such a "normal" part of daily life that they don't really think of it as mind altering.

It's basically the "toughen up buttercup!" mentality. It was more explicit in the 60's when "dope smoking longhairs" were openly mocked as fags and sissies by "real Americans" with crew cuts who only did "manly" things like drink Budweiser and beat their kids.

The more I get older and think about that mentality, the "suck it up" mentality, I seriously wonder how half of these people made it to their golden years. How do you go your whole life just taking things the way they are?

If Jesus wanted you to smoke marijuana, he would have turned water into marijuana, not wine, you dopesmoking heathen!

Seriously though, some Christians do seem to think alcohol is okay partly because of its place in Christian tradition.

On that note:

a lot of people find the idea of any mind altering or soothing substance is immoral.

Yes but the cognitive dissonance here is that Jeff Sessions and his ilk get off to visions of the Founding Fathers and their "promise" of liberty, yet are fanatically against people smoking a plant that harms no one. Did he not get the memo that the Founding Fathers smoked it too?

Nah, as much as it seems like these people are ritualistically bringing back the mythical 1950s when "real" Americans were straight(-laced) white men and their wives ensured that they had a cocktail in hand at 4:30pm sharp--it's really about money and jailing as many people they hate as possible.

Maybe. I'm a bit skeptical. We've seen huge tax revenues in wa and co. And it costs money to fight the drug war. Also people in prison are a burden to the state, not a benefit.

I think its as simple as this dude grew up with reefer madness level propaganda and never encountered a reason to disbelieve it. Never attribute to malice what can be explained by ignorance/stupidity

Also let's not forget that Nixon started the war on drugs to be able to put more black people/hippies aka his biggest opponents in jail more and for longer.

The only winners are various industries that profit from the status quo, the losers are all the hundreds of thousands who are dead from this ineffectual battle, whether directly murdered by cartels that only exist due to prohibition, or just those who died from drugs they weren't informed about because our mythology and criminalization of drugs takes presidence over the realities of drug use and sensible responses like education and damage reduction

We're the losers. The people locked in cages are the losers. The people afraid of walking in our world are the losers.

What's sad is that much of the world takes cues from the US on many large policy positions, whether it be environmental regulation or drugs or health crises. Luckily I think much of the western world is realizing that our current administration is not worthy of leading, so hopefully they'll continue progressing without being hindered by fuckheads like Sessions.

Edit: *cues not queues.

Elections matter... sadly this is a reasonable policy in many peoples eyes because it has basically been the global policy for the last 40 years.

Despite the fact that most western countries know its stupid we now have ultra conservatives in power. Hopefully this will be only a one term president. Even if he is impeached though Pence may be more stable in certain respects, but I doubt the drug policy would change sadly so I think we need to stick out for 4 years.

We need to just have people do drugs. It's fine to say it's bad after you try them and decide it's bad afterwards, but it makes me question if this guy has a personal vendetta against drugs for another reason. Maybe he is just saying they are bad because it's more accepted than his real reasoning.

And before anyone says, "Well by that logic maybe people should rape, or murder before they decide it's bad." Well my argument is, that's bad logic because murder and rape effect another person other than yourself. Seriously, just have old Jeff smoke up in a room with videogames or something. Yeah Jeff, bang that H and see how bad it really is. We need more restrictions on the quality of our drugs, high quality drugs are an untapped resource for economic, and let's be honest, social growth. Demonizing something that thousands of people do just because you think it's bad is basically the core of every "problem"

Sorry for the rant.

Edit: words.

Sessions the hardest anonymously on the internet, everyone pick up his/her phone and light up the congressional switchboards to support the bill cosponsored by Florida Republican, Matt Gaetz and Florida Democrat, Darren Soto which moves marijuana from a Schedule I to a Schedule III narcotic. A schedule move opens up avenues for research on the benefits of cannabis as well as increases the likelihood states with more permissive marijuana laws are free from prosecution by drug warriors like the attorney general. I called the three representatives from my zip code today. I invite all to do the same.

I have a feeling that there will be an impending shitshow if he tries to crack down on state marijuana laws across the country. It's not even a left-versus-right thing at this point. Even states like fucking Montana are loosening laws at this point and we're well past 50% approval for cannabis legalization across the country at this point.

Say what you want, but I can't imagine a lot of congressional Republicans backing him up if he tries to crack down. They've proven that they're spineless, but when states hold direct votes on these issues and a majority of people vote in favor of legalization, that shows where constituent interests lie.

This isn't Reagan-era nonsense where a president gets overwhelmingly voted into office with widespread public support. Trump's approval rating is at like, 35% and there will be a massive backlash if Sessions tries to get his way. I may be concerned, but I hope that Sessions is another nail in the coffin for this shitpile of an administration.
