Is there a context for this?

They had four employees that needed to be somewhere the next morning for a flight. They asked for volunteers offering 400 then 800 bucks, eventually one person took the money and got off. Then a manager came and said they were doing a lottery and people were randomly going to be booted. A couple got selected the got up and left (presumably they also got paid?) then the last guy refused apparently he had patients to see the next morning and so they beat the shit out of him and dragged his limp body off the plane.

So basically bad management of their crew schedules resulted in bad management of the whole damn situation, which spiralled out of control and created this shitstorm?

Nice going UA.

Someone posted in the original thread that last minute deadheading (crew flying as passengers bound for a different city that they are crewing out of) for flight crews isn't totally uncommon and neither is overbooking a flight, as that's basically how most airlines operate. But what should've happened in this case is that when the guy refused, they should've asked him what dollar value, if any, it would take to leave the flight and if they couldn't resolve it that way, then rent a car for the remaining crew-person and have them drive the 6 hours to Louisville. It's not exactly as if they were flying overseas

Or just offer to other passengers for more money?

That was my thought exactly. United could've had someone stand on the plane and start offering rewards in $100 increments. Eventually someone would have taken it.

I saw a comment from someone claiming to be on this flight that one of the passengers said they would get off for $1500 (or around there) and the crew laughed at him. I guess they had reached their limit price wise.

Funny how they were offering $800 but wouldn't offer another $700. Instead they violently pulled a paying passenger off the airline. I'm guessing lawyers will get involved and they'll lose a little more than $700 now.

Which makes my little peepee hard, to be quite honest.

Penny wise and pound foolish

They were offering $800 to each of the 4 people that they needed removed from the plane, so they were, at the outset, looking to drop $3200 to solve this problem. Another $700 dollars on that doesn't massively change the equation but yet they weren't willing to budge. Very very stupid.

Yeah ironically this is gonna end up costing them a shit ton of money anyway.

They could have put the crew in a limo for the 4.5 hour drive to their destination for less than $800

Not to mention the crew had 20 more hours to get to a location 5 hours drive away. There were other solutions than screwing over a customer, beating him, and dragging him off the plane.

I'm so happy to see this.

I'm sorry that poor guy was hurt but United deserves nothing but bad press. They're a horrible airline.

Problem is, they've been considered terrible for years. They get nothing but bad press and they keep on keeping on. Doesn't seem to phase them one bit.

how the F do people make bad decisions like this? did they hire someone living in a cave raised by wolves?

That's what happens when the CEO and the people hired under the CEO are obligated to deliver shareholder returns above all other considerations. Paying more money to passengers on a plane you own doesn't generate a profit.

Every united flight I've been on has been overbooked by like atleast 5 persons. They hold up the boarding process until they have enough volunteers to get off. They do it to make sure they make the most money each flight...ugh

[–]Doctor_Ainthes_Wamp [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

My friend works for United and whenever he flies somewhere and the flight he needs is booked they just put him on another airline. About 40 minutes after the flight this guy was ejected from there was a flight AA3509 through American Airlines from ORD to Louisville. I'd be really interested to hear whether this flight was sold out or not because that would be even worse if they had other options for the standby employees.

Beat a guy up or raise the amount offered. Hmm I wonder which one would work better?

I saw the first thread earlier this morning and this is the gist as I remember it. United Airlines had an overbooked flight to Louisville, KY. Before taking off, United came on and told the passengers there are four United employees that need to be on this flight so they offered $800 and a night at a hotel to any passengers that would give up their seat. A couple gave up their seats. No one else volunteered so then, United said "two more passengers will be selected at random and be removed". The video is of one of the passengers (a doctor) being removed from his seat. There is another video floating around where he gets back on the plane saying "I need to get home!" a few times. Not sure what happened after that. I think that covers all the important bits of the story

Yeah, the passenger being dragged off was a doctor that needed to see patients the next morning and couldn't afford to not ride the plane.

*Edit - Apparently it was (and is continuing to be) removed for violation of rule #4, "No videos of police brutality or harassment".

Out of curiosity, an open question to the mods:

Is suppressing public conversation around this unjust abuse of corporate and legal authority worth the potential (seemingly inevitable) damage it will cause to Reddit's reputation as a platform for free and open discussion?

It's hilarious to me how we can get endless, daily 15+ minute videos about random youtube drama, but one showing police brutality gets removed. As much of an important issue this is nowadays, it baffles me why there is an entire rule banning these videos. They don't happen every day, and when they do, it's important that people know.

Fortunately the Streisand Effect will always ensure that any suppression just amplifies its availability.

[–]I_would_bang_Lisa_Su [スコア非表示]  (47子コメント)

[–]erotic_taco_kit [スコア非表示]  (6子コメント)

Edit: I mistakenly thought you were replying to the youtube drama comment. Opps.

And as the top comment in that thread says: search this sub for "police" and see how many brutality videos are still up and out there.

It seems very selective in the way they decide to apply this rule. United Continental Holdings is worth quite a bit of money...

To be devil's advocate most of the videos when you search "police" were either:

  1. Uploaded before the rule was created (as far back as July 2013 the rule did not exist)

  2. Videos that involve police but contain no 'violence' (e.g. a speech)

  3. Body cam videos of shootouts or incidents

  4. Are from reality TV shows which normally contain justified police reactions.

Honestly, it makes no sense for United to waste money "paying off" reddit mods after the video has already reached the front page since it just sparks a shitshow of a reaction in typical Reddit fashion. Not to mention there's still another post about the incident on the default front page thanks to r/news.

I'd put this under mods making a mistake and reacting way too slowly to a rule break. This is a massive sub with a large number of mods that work on a volunteer basis, making a lapse of judgement is bound to happen especially in such a heated video.

Mods removed it for "police brutality" a paycheck.

FTFY

I can't honestly tell if you're being serious or not.

If you are being serious, there's no chance in hell United paid off r/videos mods to delete a video which had already reached the front page and gained traction on other social media platforms. All that would do is create a bigger shitstorm ala Reddit tradition as well as being a big ol' waste of money because Streisand effect (yeah I know no shit Sherlock but if a dumb fuck like me is thinking it, so have the PR department of United).

Edit: If you need more convincing here's a long list of news sites that have/are reporting on this video and which (imo) have greater reach and influence than reddit.

Edit 2: It's also worth noting that a r/news has an article about this incident on the default front page in spot #20 (at the time of writing).

Why are videos of police brutality banned? Seems like something worth discussing.

Why do police brutality vids get deleted?

[–]Hazzat [

This is the reason given on the wiki:

Policing is a sensitive issue on the internet, and on reddit especially. This causes two problems with our pre-existing rules: firstly, videos of police harassment and abuse are often indistinguishable from political propaganda for one side or the other; and, secondly, the public nature of their office means that the police are often trivially easy to doxx—a term which means 'reveal the personal information of', typically for the purpose of witch-hunting. As you'll see from the above sections, this manages to break all three of our rules so far, and is something with which we have had huge problems in the past, leading to verbal warnings from the admins.

As the outrage sparked by these kinds of videos leads invariably to multiple infractions of our rules against personal information and witch-hunting—as well, often, to the rule against videos of assault—, we do not allow them on the subreddit. There are, as the rule says, subreddits designed for the sole purpose of housing this kind of content, and, as we'll discuss in our breakdown of Rule 9, the size of /r/Videos means that we have to ensure that our content is suitable for as many of our subscribers as possible. Violence of any kind is difficult to reconcile alongside this requirement, and so we try to minimise it where possible for the most part.

If a detailed answer is not provided soon we need to start calling these mods what they are - incompetent failures as they do not care to address major community concerns when clearly and loudly asked by the community.

It's not a case of too many questions to handle. And it's impossible for them to have missed this.

If they are purposely ignoring a significant, clear, highly up-voted question from the community that their role serves then they simply need to be removed.

*Edited spelling/grammar/formatting

I certainly would not put it past United to intentionally be manipulating the spread of this extremely negative PR nightmare that's starting to gain ground.

The last time something like this happened, Breaking a musician's $3500 guitar and absolutely refusing to compensate him, United lost an estimated $180,000,000 as share prices plummeted due to the bad PR his music videos drummed up.

[–]Beetin [

Everytime that fact is brought up, people are forced to go look for the charts that show that their shares plummeting had absolutely nothing to do with the artists fight with the airline.

United airlines has a market cap of 22.66 billion dollars. For them to lose 200 million, their share price only has to fall by 0.0089%. That's completely believable from a single bad PR incident.

  1. We live in a world where we can take videos with our phones and post it on the internet within seconds.
  2. These officers know what they are getting into with their jobs.
  3. If you do dumb shit and it's caught on camera... we can't show it on internet?
  4. It's a dumb rule in cases like this because it's going to get posted on 20 other subs and reach the front page anyways, it just makes more sense to be on a /r/videos sub than some other odd one
  5. So people will dox police officers because of a video posted on /r/videos..but maybe won't when it's shared on Twitter 5 million times or seen by several million because of 20 other subs posting it? Cmon...

What I don't understand is why they let too many people on the plane to begin with. I understand overbooking (and it sucks, fuck them) but if they knew that they needed extra seats for the crew, why wouldn't they just deal with it before boarding?

What an incompetent airline.

They already asked for a volunteer before people boarded and rebooked them apparently. I guess after they boarded people they got a call from someone in upper management saying "hey we need 4 extra seats on that flight, make it happen".

So it wasn't really overbooking they were throwing him off for, it was just fully booked and they wanted it underbooked for their employees

i think what disturbed me most was that he was forcibly dragged out by some slobby looking peon that works for united, and not the actual police. this tells me the police likely knew they had no right to drag the man out and wanted no part in it. and it also tells me the employee is an idiot for even thinking it was a good idea to physically lay his hands on a customer in a violent way. I work at a condo, and even I and security know better than to physically touch or fight a person because of the liability.

"I was on this flight and want to add a few things to give some extra context. This was extremely hard to watch and children were crying during and after the event. When the manager came on the plane to start telling people to get off someone said they would take another flight (the next day at 2:55 in the afternoon) for $1600 and she laughed in their face. The security part is accurate, but what you did not see is that after this initial incident they lost the man in the terminal. He ran back on to the plane covered in blood shaking and saying that he had to get home over and over. I wonder if he did not have a concussion at this point. They then kicked everybody off the plane to get him off a second time and clean the blood out of the plane. This took over an hour. All in all the incident took about two and a half hours. The united employees who were on the plane to bump the gentleman were two hostesses and two pilots of some sort. This was very poorly handled by United and I will definitely never be flying with them again."

Or perhaps we're wondering why they would beat a man, before throwing him out of a plane.

@reddit how much did you get to remove the #flight3411 videos from the front page?

There was alot of film techniques used to make Tom Hardy look as big as Bane, but when they are both hanging out of the plane you can clearly see how much shorter Bane is as compared to Dr.Pavel.

In scenes with Christian Bale, he wore shoes which gave him an extra three inches of height. Turns out he wasn't such a big guy.

r/videos is a "safespace" for shitty videos. God forbid that all videos are allowed and then up or downvoted on their merit alone. Reddit is one of the most censored websites on the internet.

The main post was taken down by Reddit around 8:45 am est.

Fuck you reddit. Did United pay you to take the post down? Last I checked it had some 17k upvotes. Fuck you.

Edit: swarm the front page. Every post today references this incident. Re post the video. Spam the mods. They removed the message above from, removed the original video 2x, deleted the main two posts. Fuck them.

WE the citizens from the UNITED states of America stand UNITED with this hardworking immigrant doctor who had his head bashed in by thugs dressed in police uniforms. #wewillburnyoutotheground

Two posts about the video were removed, both citing the police brutality rule. This will be the third one, but I imagine it'll be removed for different reasons.

don't be scared of having those types of videos hit your front page. its why many of us enjoy coming to reddit, to see whats going down in the world.

CoC is like any Privacy Statement you are forced to sign at a car dealer, doctor, etc, or the T&C you agree to when using Reddit, Google, facebook or any software or service. You have no choice, if you want the ticket, you agree to the terms which are designed to fuck you over in the event of anything the airline wants. Lobbyists got the laws enacted for the good of the airlines, which are good for shareholders and are good for campaign donations. Welcome to the modern, bigboy world.
