Video: Carrick remembers Roma rout

On 10 April 2007, Manchester United had work to do to remain in the Champions League, having lost 2-1 to Roma in the first leg of the quarter-final.

Wayne Rooney’s away goal at Stadio Olimpico provided hope but, in the end, it proved largely irrelevant as the Reds obliterated the opposition with a seven-goal blitz. Michael Carrick opened the scoring with a wonderful long-ranger and then turned provider with a superb pass in the build-up to Alan Smith's sumptuous volley, as United went ahead on aggregate for the first time. A minute later, Rooney made it 3-0 on the night and by half-time it was 4-0, courtesy of Cristiano Ronaldo's first goal in 26 games in the Champions League proper (he'd previously only scored in a qualifier, vs Debrecen in 2005).

After breaking his duck, Ronaldo didn't dally - he struck his second three minutes after the break. Carrick was the other player to complete a brace on this glorious night, by curling a shot into the top corner. 6-0 up after 60 minutes and United still weren't finished - after Daniele de Rossi netted a consolation goal, Patrice Evra opened his European account to make the final score unforgettably United 7-1 Roma, 8-3 on aggregate.

Carrick sat down with ManUtd.com to look back on that famous night at Old Trafford, recalling: "I think they were two of my best goals for United on what was an incredible occasion.

"I remember quite clearly before the match that we really wanted a big start in the game. We wanted to create pressure and momentum and get the fans behind us and create a great atmosphere. We did that from the start and it was wave after wave of attacks.

"Obviously things went for us and I managed to get the first goal. You could just sense there was so much positive energy inside the place. It was an incredible night and things just kept on going after the first goal. We got another, then a third, then a fourth…it just went on. It was a sensational night."
