"I ADDED THE NEW ASH MASK AND HOOD FILES!"
hello, here is a preview from my initial ash mask sculp. i just had a blurry picture with actually no deatails or deph and thats why i decided to pimp up the mask with some smartinius pepper. i expect that i kinda failed the initial idea behind that mask, thats why iam open for teamwork. iam prepared for critique, suggestions, ideas and love. its best if you draw you suggestions into the picture. i dont want to use more effort than needed since its actually just decoration somewhere. so if you like it i keep it.
Smartinus - your killing it.
Loving the proportions. I would suggest maybe rounding off some of the faceted face planes, as you may run the risk of it looking cartoony like darksiders.
I'm certaintly not some Morrowind scholar (like some people on here), but take some liberties to add some fine detail in there. I like how simple it is, so it doesnt have to be much. Take the Thor Elf mask thingy as an example - maybe a thin line around the lips etc etc. Just enough detail for there to be a nice spec / lighting hit.
Keep it uuuuuuuuuuup :)

Since it's Vivec's own mask, maybe we could give it more likeness to his face?

That's also a bit more like the facial features from the original.
I have no quarrel with one or the other. It doesn't have to be modeled after a specific face type, since it's a mask. Both look great in my opinion. I can see why we'd go with Dragomirs concept, it's still your mask Smart, just in a more Morrowindish style. I'm confident you'll make something great out of it either way!
Hmm, would it be possible to make the ash mask an equipable item? I know it sounds a bit silly but it could offer some serious fortifications at the cost of having an absurdly low durability. So it could be useful in a pinch but not something you'd wear all the time.
yeah thx people, thats the kind of feedback thats useful for me.
i gonna model the mask in a way it could be put on so we have some possibilities later on.
update
wow this looks nice :)
update surface de
tails test
hm, it have significant thickness, maybe it must have more fuzzy edges of face?
My two cents:
cool thank you all! your inspiration definitly enhance the art. i gonna use the stuff you send me as template and do my best to finish the mask.
to give you a sneak peak:
-i gonna use the face shape of dragomir
- i gonna use natterfomes concept for the textures and will add the firecracks as detail.
- i gonna add tear groves from kurufinve
- robbinsmoth sugested making the face more round, also, i like to use his thor picture for the surface details
-i gonna model the mask in a way it "could" put on even if its not the purpose of it
-the thickness of the mask will change too
so on, i think its enough input. thx, and may the brush be with you.
hey,
iam done. i pack the files soon and post it here for download.
edit: sketchfab preview >>>> https://skfb.ly/CtFQ
edit: i tweaked the emissive map and diffuse as well. now the tear groves pop more

i hope it works this time.
Awesome Christmas Present Smartinius!
freakin' nailed it!
Fire cracks on Vivec's ash mask...seriously?
You guys wonder why people left the project in the past. The art designers are just ridiculous, would drive away anyone with a sense of style, lore and reality.
That said, good luck with the rest of it.
That's a great point Orpheus. I mean, everytime I've seen a mortal turned god create a hardened mask out of ashes, the cinders always cool immediately. How dare we take creative license with the laws of physics in a mystical world? We should all be ashamed of ourselves.
Sarcasm doesn't work as well in print. Pity that.
It looks freaking awesome Smarti. You're my hero!
Still upset about Ebony Armour I see, Orpheus. Btw i cant find your mod work on Nexus, got a link?
Glowing embers on the mask of a God seems an acceptable design flare done to professional standard by someone who isnt paid, there shalln't be much grumbling.
But just for you, we'll test it with toned down glow map, and reach a nice balance mkay.
This is really good! Nice work!
Orpheus, Ashking and Ravanna already pointed the more technical aspects about why you shud be quiet and silent, only thing that is left for me to say is: shut the F*uck up and go scre* yourself my fiend.
The mask is solid and the design is good, Smart did an awesome work. Again.
Merry Christmas everyone.
Orpheus! your comment makes me anger!
iam not responsible for your general problem with art changes. i was very open with this project and everyone had a chance contributing even you and all i did was taking the ideas serious and implement it into the design( your opinion was "NOT" there). iam not accepting your bullshit talking, and iam not responsible for your frustration about other designs. also iam not responsible because leaving people. saying that makes me anger and i feel handled unfair. with your sentense, your pointing your finger just to me, saying i do bad, but at the same time, you do nothing to change anything, and thats what annoys me most. its not even your point, that the art style changes. its your attitude that suck.
you wanna change something? then paint a picture or drop a line with your onpinion but fuck me in the face after i and some community members realy put time, ideas and heart into this mask is just asshole behavior.
iam willing to forgive you and i want give you the further chance to share your opinion in up comming projects. i think you too shall have a chance to share your opinion, iam sure, if you change your attitude, you have some interesting ideas. so stay tuned and follow the project. but if you dont take it serious, creating a construktive critique or a concept or something that displays your idea and wishes, then i just cant take you serious.
best wishes, smartinius
To be honest I wasn't too happy about the fire cracks myself :P They steer the design too much in the direction of murderous badass, and away from merciful demigod.

The facial features seem to have changed from the last update too, in that one I liked it the most. But well, that's not really something to get so butthurt about, after actual proffessional teams interpret the world of Tamriel in this way:
If you have better ideas Orpheus, I suggest you start drawing. Skywind might end up tasteless if you don't take the mantle and save this project from the horrible graphic designers.
I think he's just suggesting that there's no need to change the mask from how it was, especially if it will be wearable. That way it feels more like Morrowind's design. However, the change has already been made. I don't think there's anything tasteless about preserving and enhancing Morrowind's original designs instead of replacing them with different equivalents, either though.
Great work, I think it looks awesome as it is right now.
i changed the eyes and mouth to make the face look sader. and i added tear groves.i was bit limited because the mask has no eyelids. that why i made the bust behind the mask to enhance the sad look a bit.
here is a zbrush render , maybe you understand why i keept it , because here it looks sad and everything. but at the end, after the retopoly, it changed the look and i had to work with what i had to not spend another 6 hours. the fire cracks gave the design some contour so you can see the actual face. otherwise just with a dark texture the face just look flat with no highlight and definition. even the AO map deos not enhance that.
the texture behind the mask is aktually just this ash picture (i found here on the forum). then i added a directional stroke filter to mimic the concept idea from natterforme with the stripes. over that i added the fire cracks and a bit fire underneath the ash.
you can send me a texture like the ash texture and i just simply apply that to the mask as diffuse.
here is a test example of a heat stone idea. do you see the problem i have without the fire? its a bit better with some spec

iam not a designer, i need a designer make the art directional decisions up front.
thats for it now. cya
now we have 2 designs
Smooth off the cracks and then add then increase your sub div lvls a few times after adding any extra changes. Then add the cracks using this brush on a new layer. Its called the orb cracks brush. Its better than the method you were using. Also, put the tears on a seperate layer or just leave them off and add them in the texture file.
As for the fire/lava cracks, my heart wont be broken if you dont keep them^^.
http://vimeo.com/26399689
I can't lie, I like it better without the cracks and lava looking stuff. I feel like it is too busy with the glowing cracks. I also think it detreacts from the over all feel of the mask. No disrespect meant to anyone, just my two cents :P.
Edit: Maybe the ash texture could look like old hardened ash. Some reference...

Why not use both versions? (if the fiery one still exists that is). The questline actually has two instances of the mask, the duplicate that's publicly displayed in the temple and then the real mask concealed within the shrine itself.
dear community,
consider the ash mask project as closed.
we got 2 versions, also i do a hood to make the mask an equipable item. i canot and also dont want to realize everyones ideas and wishes and for me its just getting frustrating changing the whole thing over and over again.i yet spend double the time just for changing it over and over as planed. cmon be honest, i could have made the mask much uglier. if this mask was on the cover or the super mega kick ass mask of the whole game, i would understand all the fuzz but the mask will just lay somewhere in a room without much interest as far as i know and the addition to wear it is even a big feature that costs extra time to make.
please give me some rest and just live with what you got. its exausting making everyone happy. i will concentrate on the nice thump up feedback for now, thx for your support!

may the brush be with you
I really like second version. It is much more closer to original without glowing crack. Good job smart
Btw. I don't see problem with cracks it gives cool diversity to the mask. I treat it like tears of Vivec combine with ash. Like in The Pilgrim's Path "Vivec's tears weakened his ash cast."
Its probably not but is it possible to make two variants based on whether you're in combat or not? It would be pretty cool if it was blue cracks to look like its crying. Then when you go into combat it glows red to look like fire and signify Vivec's anger or something? Just a stupid idea :P
Oops sorry didn't see smarti's post. Disregard this :)
THIS IS MINE NOW !
Great work Smart, you captured it perfectly.
Oh man, that looks so awesome! That worn leather looks especially good. Great work.
Will ppl ask you on streets if you are Vivec relative and try to touch you for blessing? :)
---
If smbd want to make 2 versions - you can complete them in one (half-to-half as Vivec's face).
Hwvr imo black fissures can suits better.
That is some fantastic work! Great great job!
I take back what I said in my previous post, this looks great man.
is that you doctor doom?
Mask looks good, but good move losing the fire. It's just volcanic ash solidified by the tears of Vivec. It should be very brittle and old - it certainly shouldn't be equipable. There's a false one on prominent display, with the actual one hidden away. The bust underneath would be good for the false one on show.
Smarti you`re a BEAST! Great work I dont know whats the fuss about ;)
Just 2 words. Love it. Nobody ever wrote about a hood and I think it's a wonderful idea. But I do think the red lines are a bit to much since (as Smitehammer sugested) it is a simple mask made out of ash.
But I really wouldn't mind finding it ingame like this!
