Heller, a developmental psychologist, knows firsthand how difficult life can be for people suffering from sensory defensiveness (SD). Symptoms include flinching from touch; overly acute senses of smell; fear of escalators; irritation at certain lights; and eating disorders. While these symptoms are often present from birth, for many other people they can be triggered by some traumatic event. Adding to the pain is the difficulty in diagnosing this ailment-some sufferers are told they have ADD or autism. Heller briefly discusses her own successful therapy and how it transformed her life. The book includes four sections-the first two focus on an overview of the condition, and the second two examine treatment, including diet, medication and relaxation techniques. Useful appendices list alternative treatments and resources. The writing is clear and relatively jargon-free, and sprinkled throughout the book are anecdotes from patients who have successfully battled SD. Patients who have this condition will find this book reassuring, especially since Heller discusses a treatment and usually follows up with a real-life scenario. For example, the section on light therapy ends with a success story of a woman who had learned to cope with her light sensitivity: "[Anna] realized that her eyes were wide open, no longer slits. She had spent years walking around in a haze, blinded by glare, with her brain taking in only a sliver of light." For people with SD, this title will wonderfully supplement their medical treatment.

outstanding book about people who have issues with processing outside stimuli

My son has a serious sensory processing disorder- most every stimulus is too much for him. I learned very early how to make the world work for him most of the time, by only choosing comfortable clothes, allowing him to avoid noisy settings, accepting his strong food preferences and aversions (NEVER have even slightly soft egg, for example), adjusting the temperature to meet his comfort level,and letting him wear sunglasses when it is too sunny or the lights are too bright and ear phones when life is too loud. What I did not know is that there are therapies to help my son integrate the world around him in a less stressful way instead of needing to have the world constantly adjusted for his comfort. That there are treatments to make life easier for him. This was a very exciting book for me to read. The only negative- like many books of this type, the net is widely cast- it presents itself as a fix for "almost everything that is wrong with you". The things you read could apply to a lot of people that may not actually have a problem, and this diagnosis can cause many different problems in life, not all of which are actually related to a sensory processing issue.

Off to the Races for Treatment of Adults with SPD

Still utilising as my SPD bible. This is one of the few pieces of literature geared towards adults struggling with SPD. It seems odd that all SPD texts bear distinctly childish or adolescent themes and vernacular-given that at some point an SPD child will become an SPD adult. But nonetheless, thank you Sharon Heller for explicating all the eccentricities I had no inclination were indeed explicable. Of course I'll be finding a proper psychologist to fully commence sensory integration management and improvement but until then, there are some warmly useful idea I can find in this book!

If you think someone you know, or even yourself has issues with sensory experiences, this is the book to help explain it all. This actually helped me not just understand my 9 year old son, but also my mother, who I just always thought was overly fussy and that she really couldn't possibly care about anything so minute or invisible to the rest of us, like how long the sparkling water has been sitting in her glass, or what time of day I cut the herbs for the garnish. But it is all real. And my son has cried one time about the sheets being too scratchy. I really get it all better now. This book is a must for sensory families.

This book, and finding my diagnosis, changed my life. As an adult with so many "quirks," it was such a relief to find an explanation. To say it was life-changing was an understatement. Reading this book was like reading my own autobiography. THANK YOU to Sharon Heller for this piece of work. I am a 35 year old adult with "generalized anxiety disorder" who has identified as a "Highly Sensitive Person" since reading Elaine Aron's book about a decade ago. Sharon Heller's book took me to a whole new level of understanding of the neurological basis of sensory processing disorder (which I have finally been diagnosed with this spring) and -- more importantly -- how to move forward. My case is relatively mild, but it has still shaped much of my experience, preferences and challenges. Dr. Heller writes beautifully and clearly, offering one of the few books for adults with sensory defensiveness. In summary: This book is changing my life. Highly recommend.

While reading this book I was so relieved to see that someone else has experienced life as I have! I realized that I don't have to "tough it out," but the things that I feel are very real, and if I am not comfortable in a situation to just remove myself. There are times that I feel life is bombarding me with stimulus and I just want to go hide, its not an emotional thing, it is like someone has just turned up the volume in my ears, the nerve endings on my skin and I just need to get away. Even when I was little I was uncomfortable in new clothes that were stiff, not broken in. I wouldn't let my mother wash my hair, my scalp was too tender; and fireworks were just over the top too loud. This book gives some great affirmation and coping skills. We are not alone.
