I was playing on the Wii U the other day just playing using the Gamepad screen and I forgot how really terrible the screen actually is on that thing. Everything is white-washed.

Even at 720p the Switch screen seems like UHD by comparison. lol

The Wii U Gamepad screen is the worst piece of shit. I don’t know Nintendo’s so shocked no one liked it.

it's really comfortable as a controller tho.

Yeah I'm gonna miss using it to play splatoon, the thiccness was just right for me.

For me it was uncomfortable as hell hehe

Agreed. The buttons underneath your index and middle fingers just felt so right! I wish Nintendo had kept this and Sony and Microsoft would copy it. Plus maybe add the Steam Controller's extra rear buttons too if possible. I know many people think less buttons is better, but personally I don't mind if there are more as that means more options.

I found it to only be okay. The nubs on the back were too small to actually grab, but too big to not get in the way of holding it just as a slate. It was kinda thick too, I much prefer the joycons.

Damn and here I am still in love with the Wii U and its screen.

The Gamepad actually looked pretty nice when it first released though - or at least it did for the price. Nintendo themselves have said that the jump in sales of tablet computers (and to some extent larger phones) was one of the main reasons that the Wii U failed.

Personally, I'm not so sure about that. But it's clear that mobile screens have improved hugely since the Wii U first came out.

Nah the iPad blew it off the map day one, especially when you consider most people prefer capacitive over resistive touch screens.

Hell my Nook Color from the same time period also had a much better screen and it was cheaper than a Wii U.

I always thought a major thing that hurt the Gamepad's wide appeal was the fact that it was single-touch in a time where all the popular portable devices were multi-touch. Really did a number on the appeal of using multi-media features on it.

Oh yeah, the iPad was way better. But it was also several times more than the Wii U.

I didn't have a Nook Color so I can't really compare that. But I'd imagine that the screen is the main thing that your money goes towards when buying a Nook, so that wouldn't surprise me if it did look better for less. Obviously the Wii U had far more processing power which a lot of the cost was going towards. I definitely don't remember a whole lot of tablets (in the same sort of price range) looking a lot better than the gamepad.

I'm sure there were some around. But the gamepad screen definitely wasn't so terrible when compared to similar sorts of screens around at the time.

The issue was the Wii U hit right as tablet hype took off with a washed out and resistive screen that didn't hold up well to tablets. I agree it was a good value for what it was in retrospect, but those early cheap tablets had games too and it took years for people to realize how shallow those games were (some people never did) due to all the hype.

The Wii U was in the wrong place in the market at the wrong time.

The screen was shit from the day I got it

I love the Wii U gamepad screen. I used it exclusively to play on.

You’re in the minority. It’s objectively a bad screen.

No one tried it. A lot of people who had it loved it!

Switch looks better aesthetically and graphics-wise, but Gamepad was a good initial foray.

Yeah, the colors on the gamepad screen are extremely dull and have a bad warm look to theme. BOTW for ex. looks super vibrant and colorful on the tv, switch over to the gamepad and the colors are noticeably toned down and worse.

Thankfully Nintendo has fixed all of that with the Switch screen.

They aren't shocked, not anymore anyway. Stopped production months ago. They get it, albeit late.

Damn, you got a full outlet on a flight?

Very common nowadays

Not with Canadian flight companies. Normally just a slow charging USB port.

For domestic flights, it's true that even if there is an outlet they charge EXTREMELY slowly.

But for international flights they actually tend to have full outlets which is nice.

I was on an international flight a few days ago and decided the try the outlet to charge the switch (using the official adapter) To my surprise i was playing zelda AND it was charging about %1 every 2 mins, spent the whole flight playing zelda. Blew my mind.

Yeah, I’m used to flying domestic which would make my 3DS go from 3 bars to 2 bars while charged during a 6 hour flight. But last time I flied international it changed my life. Charged everything properly and actually was able to use my devices without worrying about killing them.

So you know the satisfaction of playing while waiting for your bags, in the taxi, etc with a full charge.

Damn that sounds nice. I can only elongate the life of my phone on my international flights.

Air Canada has them when I flew between Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver

I flew four flights with American Airlines a couple weeks ago. I have to disagree, though I admit this is all that I've flown in years and it's a bad sample size.

One flight had an outlet and a usb port which I used to charge my stuff. It also had touchscreens in the back of every chair and I could view a map which tracked the flight which was pretty cool. I could even match up satellite imagery with what I could see out my window.

The other three were no different than when I had flown as a kid in the 90s, with the exception that the seats were smaller. Only one had an outlet to plug in and it was awkwardly placed and unpowered so it didn't matter anyway.

I fly every other week through Delta to various states and I nearly always have 2 outlets in front of me

I wouldn't say it is VERY common. It is highly dependent on which airline and which routes you take, as the equipment tends to remain consistent for each. I'd say about 30% of the flights I take have this, but YMMV.

It's extremely common on international flights.

Considering the Wii u was selling for almost $300 all the way until the end, I don't know if it's fair to call it the poor man's switch.

It still is haha. Used is $250 online easy. I've been trying to get one but won't pay that much

You can get a refurbished 32 GB one for $200 on nintendoa store

Badass, thanks

I see them on Craigslist for $200-$300 with games and controllers.

Hope you didn't need to charge the gamepad along the way!

I hate the gamepad exclusively because of the awful battery life

Yeah, it's pretty sad. Once I get some more money, I'm going to buy an expanded battery.

Better get that soon. I would imagine they will discontinue them soon.

Can't he just plug the charger into the Wii U base?

It's a normal wall plug, not a USB.

Ohhh I forgot. I bought mine third party and it's a USB

I did this recently on a 14.5 hr road trip with the wife, we traded off driving and sleeping/BoTWing. Bought a two plug inverter from Microcenter to power the console and charge the handheld

It's still pretty cool that the Wii U even has a screen on the controller. They did succeed at doing that. I give them props

I'd hate on the wii u but it basically paved the way for the switch. It was a gen 1 apple product in a lot of ways. Terrible but with lots of room for innovation and improvement

I wouldn't say terrible although it does look incredibly clunky compared to Switch. It feels great to play on for hours!

I actually like the controller layout better on gamepad than Switch.

Unrefined is probably a better word

The Wii U is almost perfectly the bastard child of a Wii and a Switch. At this point, I'm just impressed. It's as if Nintendo had the Switch in mind the whole time and they made a product that was exactly in the middle of the two.

I still think they should have realized the technology wasn't ready and sold a "Wii HD" without the tablet controller (but with a Wiimote Plus) instead.

I think naming it anything other than Wii ____ would have sold millions of more units. I still can't believe one of the most successful companies in the world came up with Wii U for a brand new console name.

It would have sold millions at the beginning and allowed third party devs to keep making games, selling millions more.

What a terrible idea that name was.

Forgive me for not knowing this, I never had a Wii U. Are you able to use just the Gamepad by itself?

Nope, he has the console plugged in probably under his seat, and the gamepad is connecting to it wirelessly

To clarify, you can play certain games just in the gamepad, but it had to be connected to the console, since the game is just streaming from the console. It's not like the switch where all of the hardware is in the tablet.

Also worth noting, the game pad loses signal if you try to play it around a corner or beyond a wall. It needs a close, open space to feed the signal through.

It's a pain in the ass, but when you consider it sending the game signal via WiFi and free of latency it makes a bit more sense.

Lucky you were able to bring that with you! Thanks to ban on electronics, I can't play my Switch when I fly to Jordan this summer

Pretty sure you can play it on the way there, just not on the way back.

Just sell your wii u for a Switch m8

"poor Man's switch"

Pretty sure that setup costed more than actually buying a switch, and even if it didn't, it was only $50 bucks cheaper.

The wiiU gamepad always felt cheap to me, like some low-quality tablets for 0-3 years old.

Add to that uncomfortable design, resistive touch screen and low battery life...

Thank goodness the Switch feels way more high-end, i wish the resistive panel and the ips lcd were 'merged' together like on the ipad pro/iphone 7 and the battery life was higher, but apart from that it's awesome, nice design :).

I personally thought the Gamepad was really comfortable. I never understood the complaints. But I respect your opinion. I agree it does feel cheap and I hate the spongy buttons.

The Switch has a capacitive screen.

I wish it was a glass screen though. The plastic screen feels cheap, and a screen protector is 100% needed as it scratches easily.

At least it's shatter-resistant. :)

Honestly i never really felt bad about using the Wii U to play.

Isn't this why the Switch was made? For full portability?

Edit: wow negative votes already? Was just implying that the Switch was made for this and that the Wii U wasn't really designed as a full portable console, not saying OP is poor either, some people just can't afford it right now because responsibilities, or maybe it's just hard to find. But hey it's not like anyone can't do their own thing so go on right ahead.

"Poor Man's Switch", meaning he can't afford to buy a $300 console.

It's a cross country flight, most of those planes have tvs.

That's an insane amount of effort, and I imagine some raised eyebrows from security.

All it takes is a Wii U and a power cable in a carry on bag, doesn't seem like that much effort

Packing it all in a bag that presumably has a bunch of other things you need is, while also making sure nothing gets damaged. I would also imagine when going through security the bag and Wii U (not sure if the console plus gamepad fit in a single tray) would likely need to be separate, and depending on security and weather you'd have more trays for stuff like coats and shoes.

I took my wii u traveling a month ago in my carry on and was stopped at a checkpoint to do a bag search. They wiped the wii u for bomb powder check.
