The moderator of /r/Bellingham was the sole defense witness listed in the court paperwork.

Well. Clearly no conflict of interest there, then...

The issue thst arises is not of the case, but of the personal information, even a name, linked to the moderator. This can lead to future disasters to the person, to even a bad look up for future career choices if the account has some questionable material. It only got worse when he blocked the article and caused this specific piece that they are in it to cause some redditors to go beyond the line.

Wasn't Reddit specifically introduced in some way into the court record there?

If so, if a mod's identity is in the public record via the courts, doxxing would be off the cards.

It's definitely in the news - the moderator likely blew it as it is on the public court record now:

http://www.bellinghamherald.com/news/local/crime/article130240534.html

Origins of the criminal case can be traced to a dining recommendation posted on reddit.com/r/bellingham, what’s called a “subreddit,” which is a page focused on a general topic. One user had suggested Cosmos Bistro, a newer restaurant on the ground floor of the Herald Building, in September 2015.

“Cosmos, no,” replied charmlessman1, who became a witness in the trial. “One of the owners is a rapist.”

Rogayan co-owned Cosmos. He managed the front of the house with cheery, over-the-top enthusiasm that made him memorable to patrons. Days later as rape accusations piled up on social media, his business partner banned him from the restaurant. Meanwhile, the moderator of /r/Bellingham deleted comments on the thread. (The moderator is the defense’s only other listed witness, besides Rogayan.)

How the fuck does that happen? Defense witness is literally the mod of a Bellingham subreddit.

How small of a world?

Bellingham is a small place

Much like /r/SeattleWA, we have /r/Bellingham_WA to avoid bad mods.

Bullshit mod behavior involving convicted rapists? In MY Western Washington area subreddit?

Out-of-the-loop ?

The mod of /r/seattle defended an acquaintance of his to the point of arguing / locking posts, and continued to do so after the accused had been charged with a crime. His argument was he had not yet been convicted .. a standard that he applied only to this one incident, and not to any other incident in the news. The /r/bellingham mod seems to have gone even further, and censored content about his buddy rapist even after the guy pled guilty to a crime.

What I found unacceptable in both was while the mods start out using the "it's not a real crime, there's no police report, don't doxx this guy, he might be innocent" as their justification for suppressing news .... once the accused had been written about in local media ... the mods still stuck to their guns and still suppressed the news. Then it came out that the mods in both cases had a personal connection to the accused rapist.

In the case of the /r/seattle mod, this happened in a context of his dubious and inconsistent rules about linking news stories about events he himself did not personally profit from, and other idiocy.

So it does then make sense for the mod to stay out of threads himself, but to keep still deleting them after the guy pleads guilty?

[–]hyperviolatorWestside is Bestside [スコア非表示]  (1子コメント)

It makes zero sense at all.

Unless these two mods in /r/seattle and /r/bellingham are going out of their way to defend rapist friends/acquaintances of theirs. Which was the point I was making to start with.

I can make a guess why he won't serve any additional time; it sounds like the cases were really difficult to win, as already evidenced by the mistrial. A guilty plea means he's now a felon, has points on his record for future offenses, and he'll probably have to register as a sex offender.

Not ideal at all, but definitely better than an acquittal or another mistrial. I don't know why the mods there wouldn't want it posted. Retaliation concerns?

I don't know why the mods there wouldn't want it posted.

There was something about the head mod being part of the trial and he legally couldn't post anything about it so to cover his ass he wouldn't let it up on the sub.

Much more likely they're buddies in some way.

Bellingham is a very small community and this case was very high profile.

If he stays local, his sentence will be a prison of not being able to go anywhere or know anyone without rape convictions hanging over his head.

[–]Syzygy666 5 ポイント6 ポイント  (0子コメント)

There is no way that guy stays in Bellingham. Where would he go to do... anything? The man is reviled and there are too many people up there who would confront him in public.

[–]Tasonir 2 ポイント3 ポイント  (0子コメント)

He has already served 1.5 years. He's been released now until the next court date, and it's possible he might go back for a few more months. But it sounds like they're considering sentencing him to ~25 months and he's already served 18, so he may be able to work out an agreement to just serve the rest on parole.

It's a light sentence definitely, but it's not zero jail time.

[–]barlistercirclejerkseattle 1 ポイント2 ポイント  (1子コメント)

He's served a year and a half and is going to serve a total of 25 months. Why do you think he won't serve any time?

[–]SeamlessYellow 3 ポイント4 ポイント  (3子コメント)

I'm sure there is a Western (the university) reddit you could post to.
