Most of us here have to own our shit. There is no safety net. Especially divorced, child support, post child support college, etc. etc. etc. if you have kids. You might be feeling a bit down and out because you are bored.

I have a suggestion. You might not be focusing on your major base of the Hierarchy of Needs. You need to work harder. But only for the benefit of yourself. I suggest maybe a side-gig. Something you've always wanted to do, that you can throw yourself into. In addition to your regular 9-5. I do this. Done it for over two years now. The more I worked between those two gigs, the more I appreciated my hobbies, and my down time. But your second gig needs to be something that you are passionate about or interested in. But different from your 9-5. I would recommend one being physical, one being less physical. Balance the two. One involving people and social skills, one more low key. Every minute you spend in that second gig is reinforcement into your security - your pyramid base of the Hierarchy of Needs.

The added work and time from the second gig will make all of your moments in your so-called Etch-a-Sketch life so much more valuable.

Example. Thing I really hate? Sitting around watching a marathon of some series on Netflix. Thing I really love? After a first shift starting at 7:00 a.m., to a next shift sending me home at 10:30 p.m. to two to three beers, and one show, focused, and tired, and to just wind down with. I love the show, love the wind down. But I sure as hell am not bored.

I could go on and on and on about what to do, outside of work. But for me, my second job is my hobby. It's my "work out." And every minute spent is money in the bank, and exercise in the body.

Just some thoughts.

Yeah, I don't know if more work would be great for me. The happiest I've ever been was when I was working from home part time. I had tons of free time, and I had a few simple pleasures in my daily routine. Of course, at that stage in my life, the wife and kids were an integral part of my life, and that aspect no longer exists.

As nice as my full-time job is now, it just burns me out. I can't really imagine taking on more work.

Food for thought, though. I agree that I do need to find something more constructive to do with my down time.

I get it. I've thought about taking back up an activity like training for a marathon, and then beyond. Man, you are starting to sound like me at certain times of my life. PM me if you want but how old are you may I ask and what's the situation with the kids/ex? How long ago was the divorce? Where's the relationship with them now? Mine went right into the toilet, with absolutely no contact when my son reached a certain teen age, spent two years in exile, then suddenly reappeared, only to go his own way when he reached 18.

I know the darkness.

I practice Italian Sidesword as a martial art. I enjoy gaming and playing guitar. I've also gotten back into comic books and have a few titles that I keep up with. It's also a nice place to go every Wednesday and talk to the folks about comics, movies, games and other stuff.

That must be fun. I knew a couple of fencing folks in college, and they really seemed to love it.

It is. I got into it though fencing. The guys gave a demonstration at my fencing class and I wanted in. Fencing is great as a a sport but this is real sword combat--circular footwork instead of linear. It's easier on my knee and the fellowship is great.

But a martial art--any is a great way to stay in shape/coordinated, meet folks, and the real reason I do it---to set goals and work towards them. A musical instrument can do the same--setting achievable goals and making progress. These are great time sinks.

It's funny, I made the cliché move of buying a guitar after I settled into my latest house. And I've done fuck-all with it.

Yeah, my motivation is hard as fuck to find. I even pay some dude to mow my lawn.
