I don't necessarily mean for a living, but for yourself.
I get asked this a lot, and I never have a good answer. Mainly, I think, because I'm a pretty boring person. I mean, I don't really do anything. I do the 9-to-5 routine, and I futz around with odd things as needed or as curiosity strikes, but I don't exactly have any passions.
Honestly, I don't know if I ever did, besides tech stuff (which turned into my career). I mean, I have music I prefer, books I like to read, and I dabble in the culinary and mixology arts at home. But nothing gets a rise out of me anymore. No fire. I don't even geek out with home lab projects much any more.
The closest thing I have to a hobby optimizing my finances, and that's due to the mid-life-post-divorce realization that I don't want to quit working some day, be poor as fuck, and not be able to support myself. Maximizing cash-back credit card usage, tracking shit on Mint and Personal Capital, watching my retirement funds, trying to reduce all expenses, maximize tax advantages, maximize savings, yadda-yadda-yadda. I mean, is that a total yawn fest or what?
I guess it could be mild depression or anhedonia. My life just sorta experienced the proverbial shaking of the Etch-a-sketch since the divorce and I never really had reason or motivation to draw again (so to speak).
What do you guys do outside of work?
