[Discussion] Maybe controversial but, I really think we may be better off with Ibrahimovic, Carrick and Rooney leaving. (self.reddevils)

Goodness knows I've been a huge Carrick fan, longer than others I'll hazard to say. Ibra has been an incredible influence, if not always on point, and I'd hesitate to doubt he could do it one more season. Non too many will argue against Rooney leaving but none should deny, he's a true legend for this club and I'll be glad when everyone dons the rose tint in hindsight some day soon.

However,

the club has struggled with a sort of congestion in the team for years now. I think we really need to free up the space to let the squad breath as it were. You might argue that we'd lack a leader, and yes it can and has been fatal in seasons past, but we have to create opportunity for someone to step up and think we've got players capable of doing that.

I just think we need a real refresh and inject a little more talent over experience in the areas these players occupy. A refresh we haven't totally managed in the past couple years.

Just wanna say I love the tone of your post, hope it stays and get some good/thoughtful discussion. Sorry I didn't produce any myself. For what it's worth, I love all three of those players however I think you're right too. It's a gamble though, as I'm not so certain we have the players to step up. I can see Herrera willing, Mata also.

We've got a serious cohesion problem though, which I think is what you're seeing. Bringing in fresh players doesn't necessarily fix that.

Only Ibra is controversial.

Rooney is clearly finished. Carrick is done too, we need a replacement asap.

Zlatan is still delivering but you can make a case for wanting a different type of striker.

Zlatan is delivering goals, but he has been truly, truly shite at points this season.

I feel like he's only scoring because the amount of chances we create it's inevitable that he'll bury some of them/

He's also been great in a lot of games and basically won the cup final on his own. I agree he's had some poor games but I think he's been influential overall despite missing some big chances.

I still don't feel that Carrick is done. If rotated well he adds a lot of stability to our midfield. His long passes are exceptional and his defensive instincts are still incredible. He senses the danger before anyone else does.

He has never been the guy with speed, he just plays with his brain and in my opinion he still has got his strength. I really don't want him to leave. We need someone with his experience in our side.

Yeah I think one more year for sure. I like the idea of keeping around some the old guard (when justified) and feel he is a player who offers more to the club than you see on the pitch.

Well Carrick and Rooney are almost definitely leaving (or possibly retiring in the case of Carrick), and Ibra may well too.

Rooney - Yeah he should go. I think he's coming to the end of his career and I don't think he should waste it sitting on the bench because he isn't good enough to be starting week in week out.

Carrick - No. I still think he has a lot to offer us but in a reduced role. He isn't on crazy wages and although he isn't really a leader he's still got a lot of experience which is useful to have around. He's also a good option to have to close out games.

Ibra - Yes and No. If we aren't to renew with Ibra, it can only be under the circumstances that we can bring in someone who is clinical in front of goal - Someone like Icardi, who's movement and positioning in the box is incredible and I also think he'd compliment Mata and Mkhi very well because he finds space. If we can't we'd be mad to let him go because we would miss his goals too much.

I agree with what you said, we badly need a replacement for Carrick, Rooney I'm not too pushed about because I feel like our other attacking options are better.

I'll probably get down voted for this but I also wouldn't be opposed to Ibra leaving at all. He's been brilliant for us for the majority of the season but I feel like the other players are suffering in order to get the best from Ibra, the whole style of play is set around him. I'm not sure really who we could get to replace him though. Griezmann possibly but I dunno if he's suited to being the sole striker. I just want someone who will suit our style of play instead of another world record signing just because they're available.

I agree with the sentiment of replacing those positions but not about the process of them leaving all at once. That's a lot of experience that could be useful in the dressing room, in training etc when we are building Jose's team.

I completely agree about the need for change though, I'd probably phase Rooney out first in the summer, Ibra and Carrick next summer.

Depends on how you look at it. If we replace them with players in the squad, as in, playing without Ibra, Carrick and Rooney, then we're clearly not going to be better. Dropping Rooney makes sense. We need Carrick and Ibra, though.

Easiest to replace is probably Carrick. We need someone else there. Ibra, though, we could get Lukaku but putting in Rashford over Ibra would still not be beneficial. Ibra is still the far better striker.

Mourinho's hands are tied at that point. Rashford isn't good enough yet and we need a second good striker while still giving Rashford game time. Also need far more effective players around him so Rashford doesn't have to lift all the weight alone.

I agree, except i think Carrick could still have a role, much smaller then now but still. We shouldnt let go of all leaders ar once and he could play the early rounds in the cups etc to lead the youngsters.

I also feel like people underestimate Lukaku on this sub, people saying he doesnt score goals vs bigger teams etc. We would be in top 3 if we had a flat track bully, Mourinho is great at beating the small sides and getting draws or 1-0 wins against top sides. Lukaku would help with that. Dont forget that hes fast aswell, something Ibra is not anymore, him + Mhki + Martial would be leathal on the counter. I love Ibra, dont get me wrong here, I just feel like Lukaku would offer a lot of the same and pace aswell.

I agree with you. Especially on Ibrahimovic. He was a temporary fix and we are too reliant on him. Carrick needs replacing... Rooney frankly just wouldn't be missed at this point sadly
