Juan Mata's contract expires next year, 30th June 2018. So why have we not heard any news about a contract extension, while we have for Lingard, Ibrahimovic, Fellaini, and today supposedly Carrick? He's been our second best attacking player this season, bar Ibrahimovic, and has chipped in with 10 goals this season, three seasons in a row now. The groin injury he has now is his first in 490 games, or in other words since he started playing football professionally showing he's very dependable , and he's performed in a LOT of big games. I just feel he's certainly deserved a new contract, and he loves the club, but the injury came at such a bad time. If the reports are true and he is out for the rest of the season, (although I hear he's working hard to come back this month in time for our demanding Europa League fixtures) will the game he played vs Middlesbrough before his injury ( he got an assist in that game) be his last in a Manchester United shirt? Since Mata's injury, we failed to score vs West Brom although they weren't exactly playing to win, and got a scrappy draw vs Everton with a last minute penalty. I'm not saying Mata is the key to all our problems, but without his creativity, knack for being in the right place at the right time, we've looked lost without him.
We all know about Jose Mourinho's wish to clear out "deadwood" this summer, and while Mata certainly isn't deadwood, I'm getting a worrying feeling he will be sold every day that passes without news of him in talks for a new contract. I've gone off on a tangent slightly, but I for one really hope he gets his deserved contract extension, as he's got a lot more left to give. Feel free to discuss your own thoughts, does Mata deserve a new contract, or would you be happy for him to leave in the summer?
