What are the official rules about drop? Can you take the ball away and not give the ball to the opposing team when the opposing team stopped the play for your own teammate?

IIRC, there's no actual rules about a drop ball. Its just sporting to give the ball to the opposition.

I always thought (Not least based on what Refs on TV have said) that it was upto the ref if the drop ball was to be challenged or not. if not then the process is the team who didn't have the ball gets it and plays it back to the other team.

However someone posted elsewhere that the laws prevent the ref from forcing that so it must just be a suggestion rather than an order in which case I guess it makes him a complete dick but it was in the rules and hence not unsportsmanlike behaviour

It may not have been "unsportsmanlike behaviour" by the laws of the game, but it was certainly unsporting.
