If not for the US involvement in the second world war, where would we see democracy today?
[–]hazenthephysicist 18 points19 points20 points  (0 children)
Iran, for one. Ironically enough.

The second world war would have been won by the Allies without US help. Would the task have been several magnitudes? Certainly, the loss of life and resources in a WW scenario where America isn't there would have been massive for the Allies, but they still would have won.
America isn't the saviour of all democratic governments around the world, really.
Edit: I meant "several magnitudes tougher"

The USSR couldn't have fought without American support, and Asia would be Japanese.

As the saying goes: World War II was won by Russian blood, British intelligence, and American steel.

Without the Soviets, Britain and America would of had to fight the Nazi full on and would have lost so many men.
The Soviets are never credited for how many men they sacrificed.

The USSR pretty much singlehandedly defeated Nazi Germany. Besides, it's extremely unlikely Germany could do more than take Europe.
[–]Cairo9o9 8 points9 points10 points  (2 children)
No, they didn't. I will always argue that the USSR did the most of any other country, however they far from won it singlehandedly.
[–]AnarchoSyndicalist12 0 points1 point2 points  (1 child)
90% of all German casualties were on the eastern front. Not completely singlehandedly, but it's not very far off.
[–]bwh520 10 points11 points12 points  (0 children)
USSR far from singlehandedly won the war. They took the bulk of the casualties, for sure. But would they be able to do that without US and UK resources? North Africa and Italy were definitely side shows for the nazis, but side shows that still held up hundreds of thousands of soldiers. I hate the whole 'us won the war' rhetoric, but I think it's wrong to go too far in the opposite direction too.

This revisionism in every damn post jeez. Yes, they lost a fuckload of people. Read about the lend lease act, and cooperation among the allies. It took a lot to beat the nazis and the Axis. Way to give the Uk, Aus, Canada, US, etc. no credit. Without British intelligence and American manufacturing the USSR would have lost many more people and possibly would have become Hitlers breadbasket as he intended.
[–]Blebbb 0 points1 point2 points  (1 child)
Without the US the USSR would have had to contend with Japan. WWII is no where near straightforward.
[–]AnarchoSyndicalist12 5 points6 points7 points  (0 children)
Without the US, Japan would likely never have went to war in the pacific in the first place. Did you guys somehow forget the reason Japan attacked Pearl Harbor was beacuse of an embargo?
