Delta furiously making fake Trixie merch

She'll just make Pixie Pattel merchandise. And if anybody asks, Pixie is an Indian queen based in the UK, she's really big overseas.

She'll make merch that may or may not be Trixie and get mad when people think it is

Sew my sister! Making your own drag apparel is really cool, especially if you're using your own talents. Back when I was a kid I used to make really shitty fan shirts all the time, lol! I bet yours a much cooler. It's like the others said, she's talking about people making coin using her likeness.

Well by making it myself I'm not buying her nor bootlegs... But I'm still not giving her money. I'd love to support queens but they never come to France and their merch is a pain in the ass to get cause the stock is in the US.

I just refuse to pay more in shipping fees than for the item I'm buying.

I think making shirts is fine, it's when you put money in the pocket of some rando pirate for using her image/designs without her knowledge that is a real slap in the face.

Heck, I'm only in Canada and sometimes the shipping is higher than the item cost. I imagine it's only worse to France. 99.999999% sure she was not referring to one-off wearable fan art (e.g. making your own shirts). She'd appreciate those and probably sign it if you met her and wore it to a meet-n-greet. She means scammers selling unlicensed shit online. (And it is also still v. annoying how much out-of-US shipping fees are.)

[–]deathcabscutieValentina is my good Judy Funnie

Trixie is 100% right. We always talk about supporting the queens we love so much, but when we buy unofficial merch instead of the equivalent official merch, we're taking money out of the queen's pocket and helping a stranger make money off that same queen's hard work. That's super shitty, especially in an industry like drag where every dollar they make is a result of a lot of time spent hustling and networking.

Merch is a major part of how queens make their living. Drag queens don't get medical, dental, and vision insurance. They don't have a 401k or a pension. They don't have sick days or paid vacation. If they get hurt or ill and can't perform, merchandise might be their only income. The money they earn doesn't only pay for all of their drag, it also pays for rent/mortgages (if they can qualify for a home loan with such an unreliable income), bills, food, regular clothes and personal products, recreation, etc. The Drag Race girls are not wealthy!

Now, I don't think there's anything wrong with buying or making items that your faves don't sell and to your knowledge don't intend to sell. But if you've never been to any of their shows, or donated to their Patreon, or bought any of their merch, but you buy unnoficial products that you could have easily gotten from them, you're a crappy fan. Bottom line, cut and dry.

Right. So many people don't understand this. This post has me all fired up because my friends and I also depend on selling our work online, we don't have companies looking out for us. When you buy bootleg stuff with someone's art or image, you're taking money out of their pocket and giving it to a lazy thief. It's really discouraging to see how many people don't understand how shitty this is. Trixie and the artists who design her stuff both get shafted when you pay someone else for their work. It's a tee shirt. You don't have to have it. If you want one but it's too expensive for you, either don't buy it or save up. Just don't give that money to some thief to save yourself a buck.

    [–]RavnsdotJaymes Mansfield 15

Plus it isn't like they're raking it in. Didn't Katya say her merch sales from their tour in Australia were a couple grand? They're not sleeping every night on a pile of money.

Something like 2,500 bucks. I would imagine that her booking fees are at least that though, probably much more since AS2. If she's doing 3 shows a week with a booking fee of at least 2,500 per show, that's 30,000 a month/360k a year. Katya's probably on the higher end of the scale though because she's so popular and she gets booked a lot.

On the flipside, most drag queen merch is very expensive and most people I know would not pay $30-40 for a fucking t shirt. Would you?

Although buying unoffical drag queen merch does not support the queen monetarily, it supports them by putting their name out there. And hey, some people may see these know off shirts and buy the real thing.

Also I don't know how many people understand that profiting off of someone's image without permission is kinda shitty

Yep. I'm an artist and probably nothing pisses me off more than seeing people having their work stolen and slapped on redbubble/other bootleg merch, so I see where she's coming from. It's a huge issue online, I see so many stolen designs on these kinds of websites and even Amazon that I have to report to their owner so they can attempt to shut it down. Buying stuff from artists directly is their livelihood, they aren't rich rockstar musicians you're stealing from they're mostly people who work out of their homes and really do depend on every dollar they make off of their stuff - but people have no problem buying from pirates who profit off of other people's hard work so they can save a buck. It is really shitty. If someone loves a queen enough to wear their image they should buy from them directly, it supports the queen and the artist who designed their stuff.

i get where she is coming from...but... also at the end of the day they're all drag queens.. not Beyonce! so no drag queens merch should be 40-50$!!!!! thats a outrageous price for a shirt, hand bag, hat or whatever it is! majority or dragrace fans are young teens that cant afford those prices plus the shipping fee. so they resort to bootleg merch!

moral of the story: dont charge 40$ for some merch and not expect people to not buy bootleg stuff! we love you and will support you by buying tickets to see you preform ( that are overpriced also but we do it anyway) but give us a break! we are the ones working everyday making a living to pay bills we dont have the extra money to buy overpriced merch.

It could be worse, Trix. AliExpress sells unofficial Willam pillows.

She's right. Queens would rather see you buy official merchandise than wearing fake clothes. People are trying to make this into a bigger thing than it is tho, saying she's getting upset and stuff ~ Just about every queen thinks the same thing and don't want people buying fake shit

          I have never bought merch

I am not paying forty bucks for a shirt, ever, sorry.

I see her point and I agree but on the other hand... usually their merchandising designs are horrible, at least for me. I wouldn't buy something from Katya's shop but love this t-shirt . I'm not giving her money directly, but a lot of friends of mine know Katya now because of this t-shirt, it indirectly benefits her.

I wonder how she feels about unofficial march that isn't apparel? Like Chad Sell's artwork for example.

I think Chad asks the queens before he sells anything with them on it, iirc. I remember my friend wanted to buy one of his thorgy illustrations when he had a merch table set up at sidetrack for the s8 finale and Chad said he couldn't sell any thorgy merch cause she hadn't gotten back to him on whether or not it was okay for him to sell it.

I wonder how it goes if they don't even want their image drawn as I vaguely recall Willam wanting his S&M bodysuit look he once drew taken down off of his site/Tumblr; it could also be he didn't want it in his book at the time Chad was selling.

I think in that case it would be okay, because you aren't really buying merch, you're buying the art itself. You're paying because you want to own a physical copy of the painting.

Doesn't Chad have to get a queen's blessing/work out some sort of deal before he sells prints of their likeness? I felt like I read that somewhere

But someone who likes Trixie enough to buy an unofficial Trixie shirt

You'd be surprised. I've seen plenty of casual fans who will have unofficial merch & never plan on going to an actual drag show.

& sadly, I only see this growing a bigger issue as the show keeps growing in popularity. It's like people who wear mario character shirts but aren't really all that into the games.

I mean she's right, but I could never buy a $40 t-shirt. And what if you don't like her designs? It's a weird situation...shouldn't she be able to claim profits from anything that uses her image? It's this a copyright thing?

It's incredibly difficult to enforce. She would have to copyright her name and likeness (which leads to other issues since her last name is Mattel®) and then send a legal team after every tween on Etsy selling shirts with their fan art. It would be very expensive and time consuming - and definitely would hurt her rep when said tweens start running to the sub to post the Cease and Desist letter they got from Trixie Mattel™.

Yeah man I don't really get loving something or someone so much you wanna wear it on your body but at the same time not caring enough to, like, actually support them. If you can't afford official merch or don't like the designs, make your own or something but don't be giving your money to people ripping off the exact thing you're a fan of like what.

I would say there is never a wrong time to fight for your merch. The amount of money it costs to print your own t-shirt is the same as buying one of hers and she updates her stuff at least once a year.

Na it's her image that they're profiting off. The law needs to catch up here because a public figure's branding is a kind of intellectual property and it's essentially stealing you use it unofficially (as In without permission) to make money. It's shady as all hell and I don't blame her for being mad.

I don't like the tone of this comment because Trixie does have the right to be upset. But I agree to some extent -- I personally don't like Trixie's official merch all that much but I have seen unofficial stuff that is great.

Maybe Trixie and the artists can come up with a compromise/team up to mutually benefit each other.

It really gets to me when people complain loudly at shows with touring queens who hawk merch or who won't sign official merch. Tickets barely put dollars in the queens pockets and the bars are making bank off the liquor sales, so merch and tips are where it's at. And if you can't perform or tour, how do you make income and sustain yourself from all the people who "support" you? Retweets and posts on Reddit don't feed queens, henny.

If some asshole stole 5 dollars from your pocket every day, would you be okay with it because "at least they aren't stealing that much"? And would you want to do business with someone who is okay with straight-up stealing from you? $25 $30 $40 per shirt/item isn't a small amount of money that's being made off her image every time one of these bootlegs sells, and she doesn't see a cent of it. That money goes to RedBubble and whatever rando scumbag stole her designs without doing any work.
