I am certain this has happened many times before but today I just realized, with the announcement-pre order of Destiny 2, that the possibility of charging upfront for a product not yet finished, not yet shown, not yet given any real specifics or details about is really, really stupid...

I am genuinely wondering, are there any other industries that can do this without it being illegal?

To sell a product that is not finished, not polished, not shown, not proven, not specified or talked about even, is it legal or normal?

Yes, it's legal, as no one is forcing you to do it, there is no coercion taking place. People do it all the time. That's what a pre-order is. People do it with cars as well. Is it stupid? Yes. But it's a consumer's choice to do something stupid. How do you think season tickets work for games or superbowl tickets before you know who is playing?

Let's say I played the last Destiny and thought it was great. let's also say that I loved the Halo games that Bungie made. I have absolute confidence in the developer to produce a quality product to my personal expectations.

So, why should I be wary of pre-ordering?
